Happy New Year and welcome to Actors Theatre of Louisville! I’m delighted to have you join us for a bold celebration of athleticism and grit with Sarah DeLappe’s The Wolves. This Pulitzer Prize finalist offers an unfiltered look at the lives and challenges of modern teenage girls as they drill for their weekly soccer matches. We’re excited to welcome back Pirronne Yousefzadeh to direct this action-packed play. You may remember her as the director of last season’s A Doll’s House, Part 2. However, Yousefzadeh has been a familiar face at Actors Theatre since she was part of the 2003-2004 Professional Training Company, and her work has been featured in numerous Humana Festivals and PTC shows. Yousefzadeh is not the only Professional Training Company alumna joining us for The Wolves. Onstage and off, this production welcomes home more than eight alumni from our very own PTC, and we’re so pleased to have them back with us. For this production, we’re pleased to welcome Louisville Youth Group as our Transformative Community Partner. This group is committed to empowering LGBTQIA+ youth and providing the resources for these young people to become leaders and activists. With those identifying as LGBTQIA+ considering suicide or self-harm at disproportionately high rates, Louisville Youth Group performs lifesaving work by creating safe spaces. It’s a fitting partnership as The Wolves is so invested in unpacking the complex struggles of today’s teens. We hope you come back to join us on January 24 when Louisville Youth Group’s Executive Director Jason Peno will join me for our post-show discussion. Immediately following The Wolves, we step into an enchanting, Caribbean-infused tale with Once on This Island. I am thrilled to be making my directorial debut at Actors Theatre with this hopeful and uplifting musical. It’s a story of combating and overcoming oppression that is profoundly resonant right now. As part of this production, we will be holding our annual Community Conversation, using the show as a springboard for a wider discussion of issues facing our region. Finally, beginning in March, the Humana Festival of New American Plays brings the future of American theatre straight to Louisville and to you. We are proud that Actors Theatre is an internationally acclaimed launchpad for groundbreaking, world-premiere plays and extraordinary talent, and we’re so glad to have your support for this new work. To learn more about how you can experience this year's fantastic lineup of shows and special events, visit ActorsTheatre.org or stop by the Box Office. Thank you again for joining us and enjoy the show!

Q&A WITH PIRRONNE YOUSEFZADEH & ROCíO MENDEZ

Pirronne Yousefzadeh

Rocío Mendez

The soccer prowess on display in Actors Theatre’s production of The Wolves is the result of weeks of rehearsal and a strong collaboration among the actors, director Pirronne Yousefzadeh and movement director Rocío Mendez. The production’s dramaturg, Jessica Reese, spoke with Yousefzadeh and Mendez about how it all comes together. Jessica Reese: Rocío, how would you describe your role as a movement director? Rocío Mendez: What I’m doing is developing a vocabulary with the cast and Pirronne, so that we’re all united about what we want the movement in the show to be. For example, is the movement more stylized, or is it more

realistic? Of course, those choices are made within the context of the play. I use all the tools I have, including the agility of the actors, to create a common language as soon as possible—but the work never ends, until opening night! It can always be clearer and more specific. JR: Pirronne, how do you prepare to collaborate with a movement director? What are you thinking about in advance? Pirronne Yousefzadeh: I’m always trying to push myself to understand what movement options or ideas are available to us. I do research into the world of the play—and in the case of The Wolves, the particular sport—so that I have context. When I’m aware of what the possibilities

A U D I E N C E

9

B E H I N D T H E S C E N E S O F T H E W O LV E S could be, I can communicate with Rocío not only about the story we want to tell in a particular moment, but also about how to enhance that story through the details of the world we’re occupying. In terms of technical details, I often defer to Rocío, but I try to walk in with a bank of knowledge so that I can be precise about what we’re looking for. JR: For both of you, what’s your working relationship like once rehearsal starts? RM: I love working with Pirronne. We’re good at observing rehearsal from different sides of the room and seeing different things, and then getting super-specific together. That specificity with what we want and what we see is

important, and Pirronne and I bounce ideas back and forth really well, like a tennis match. PY: We can get nitty-gritty together, and there’s also a kind of trial and error that requires a lack of preciousness, which is something I appreciate in Rocío. Rehearsal is a laboratory for ideas. We try them and see how a hypothesis lands and what it does to the story, and then we try something else in light of the information we gathered from the first experiment. To me, that’s the joy of rehearsal. It requires preparation, but it also requires listening, flexibility and being present to what’s happening in the room. We’re creating as we go, with this particular ensemble of actors and with the blueprint that the playwright, Sarah

B E H I N D T H E S C E N E S O F T H E W O LV E S DeLappe, has given us. What do the actors’ bodies want to do? What makes them the most empowered?

physically. They’re all really good at what they do, and we have to show that.

JR: Finally, speaking of the actors, what are some of the things you’re thinking about or trying as you work with them in rehearsal? RM: Part of the work is getting the cast in sync, and then discovering those moments when—because of what’s happening in the play—they should get off-sync or back in sync with their stretching, ball-handling and drills. It comes up multiple times in the script that some of the characters have been playing together for years, and this team is like their second family. That means that they all have to be on the same page

PY: I often participate in warmups with Rocío and the company. It’s about teambuilding in the room, as well as giving myself a chance to understand what I’m asking of the actors in a firsthand way—experiencing what happens to my breath and what happens to my whole physical, emotional and intellectual self. That informs how I look at our movement options and harness those for storytelling moments. Every once in a while as a director, I need to get up and break a sweat too, because directing is actually much more of a physical and visceral experience when theatre is good. It’s about finding the rigor, and finding the things in the play that the language doesn’t explain, but the body does.

ACTORS THEATRE’S COMPANY MEDICAL PROVIDER Dr. Andrew Mickler, F.A.C.S. Kevin Brown, MEd, ATC, CKTP, FMT

Actors Theatre of Louisville was founded in 1964 by Richard Block in association with Ewel Cornett. Jon Jory was Producing Director from 1969 to 2000. Alexander Speer was Executive Director from 1965 to 2006.

ARTISTS UNDER COMMISSION In addition to reading script submissions from around the country, Actors Theatre of Louisville builds relationships with playwrights and encourages the creation of new work by commissioning plays from artists whom we admire. A new play commission engages a writer to pen a piece specifically for Actors Theatre of Louisville and allows us to support the work’s development from the earliest stages of inspiration onward. Some notable past full-length plays commissioned by Actors Theatre and produced in the Humana Festival of New American Plays include The Christians and The Thin Place by Lucas Hnath, Cry it Out by Molly Smith Metzler, For Peter Pan on her 70th birthday by Sarah Ruhl, Becky Shaw by Gina Gionfriddo, Maple and Vine by Jordan Harrison (co-commission with Berkeley Repertory Theatre), Big Love and The Glory of the World by Charles Mee, and Dinner with Friends by Donald Margulies (winner of the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Drama). COMMISSIONED WRITERS CURRENTLY INCLUDE: Jeff Augustin, Vivian Barnes, Lisa Sanaye Dring, Jackie Sibblies Drury, Sarah Gubbins, Jane B. Jones, Rajiv Joseph & Bill Sherman, Jonathan Norton, Gab Reisman, and Alexis Scheer
