WELCOME! It has been a rough couple of months for The Kentucky Center facility, after a fire broke out in the lobby ceiling. However, you can’t keep The Kentucky Center down. In the days and weeks that followed, we have experienced an outpouring of support that is both awe-inspiring and humbling. Our friends and partners in Kentucky’s Finance and Administration Cabinet, the owner of the building, have been working tirelessly to keep the restoration moving forward in a swift and safe manner. Our community has stepped up in a big way as hundreds of businesses and friends have offered everything from office space to charitable donations, and our patrons have continued supporting The Center by purchasing tickets and exploring Kentucky Center Membership. As I send a heartfelt thank you to everyone for their kindness, I would also like to point out the power of the people we serve. It is during challenging times that a community shows its mettle. Through this experience we are proving, once again, that our city, state and region stand stronger together. While work inside The Kentucky Center building continues, so does the work we do outside of the walls. Recently, we welcomed 255 of Kentucky’s best and brightest young artists into the ranks of The Kentucky Center Governor’s School for the Arts alumni (of which I am a proud member). These amazing artists will take what they have learned to their hometowns all over the Commonwealth to share the transformative power of the arts. Also, working in partnership with the Kentucky Department of Education, The Kentucky Center presented Arts Academies in Murray, Louisville and Danville, serving 74 educators from 64 schools in 34 counties. The Academies work with teachers and school leadership, helping educators discover ways to integrate the arts into lesson plans. You see, The Kentucky Center is more than a building. The Center is an idea that bring us together and helps create lifelong relationships with the arts. We thank you for being here tonight and showing your support. We look forward to getting back on our feet soon and continuing our work together.

he aftermath of the

June 13, 2018, fire at The Kentucky Center has shown how incredibly fortunate the organization is, as the damage could have been much worse.

6

In the days that followed the fire, as The Kentucky Center team learned the scope of the damage, one area of great community concern was the collection of 20th Century artwork on display in The Center’s main lobby. This portion of the collection, estimated at $18 million, features works by Louise Nevelson, Joan Miró, Jean Dubuffet, Malcolm Morley, Vera Klement and John Chamberlain. Due to scheduled ceiling repair work taking place this summer, The Kentucky Center had contracted Bonsai Fine Arts Inc., a nationally renowned company specializing in museum level storage, to move some pieces off site and build protective covering on the larger pieces to protect them from dust and debris. Little did they know this covering would be put to such a test.

A U D I E N C E

Of the pieces in the lobby, only two were areas of concern. One from water and the other from heat. While firefighters were batting the fire on the barrel roof, thousands of gallons of water cascaded down the wall behind John Chamberlain’s “The Coloured Gates of Louisville,” which hangs on the wall above the Bomhard Theater. As this sculpture is made of compressed, compacted and rolled car bodies, there was concern about how water might damage the art. Within hours of the fire, experts from the Conservation Center, an international leader in the field of art preservation, were on a plane to assess the situation. Amazingly, “The Colored Gates” was not damaged. When the protective

JOHN CHAMBERLAIN, The Coloured Gates of Louisville (The Inevitable Return of the Indefatigable Dr. Fahey) painted automotive steel over chrome

cover was removed, water and silt were found on the steel. The crew from the Conservation Center was able to wipe it down with denatured alcohol, which bonds to water and evaporates quickly, eliminating any danger of corrosion.

7

The other area of concern was the Louise Nevelson work “Night Wave: Moon,” a wood sculpture that hangs between Whitney Hall Orchestra Left and Right. As part of the drying process in the lobby, crews created a low humidity, high heat area. This temperate zone would create a risk for the wood. To protect the piece, The Kentucky Center and local company ART (Art Recovery Technologies) of Greater Kentucky created a unique solution. A hermetically sealed “incubator” was built around “Night Wave: Moon” with machinery inside that kept the wood at normal heat and humidity levels. Preparation, innovation and a little bit of good luck have helped keep The Kentucky Center’s permanent art collection safe during this challenging time. by Christian Adelberg

aniel Howell and Phil Lester are two of the world’s biggest YouTube stars. From producing their own comedy videos, they have gone on to present a Radio Academy Awardwinning show for BBC Radio 1; host international coverage of the BRIT Awards; release an app game “The 7 Second Challenge,” which reached No. 1 on the iTunes store; and, in 2017, they released hit board game “Truth Bombs.” They also proudly support charitable organizations such as Young Minds, Stand Up To Cancer and the British Red Cross. In March 2015, Dan and Phil launched their debut book, The Amazing Book Is Not On Fire, and accompanying 75-date international tour, The Amazing Tour Is Not On Fire. The book went to No. 1 on The Sunday Times and The New York Times Bestseller lists, and the tour became the biggest world tour ever undertaken by YouTube creator…until now. In Dan and Phil’s new stage show— Interactive Introverts—these two Internet dwelling, insecure nerds stand under the

spotlight to give the people what they want: an epic interactive experience of rants, roasts, battles, stories…and surprises that will make you laugh, cry and cringe, while putting the audience in control unlike anything before!

David Cross: Oh come On Thursday, August 9, 2018 • 8 p.m. • The Brown Theatre

E

mmy Award winner and Grammy Award nominee David Cross is an inventive performer, writer and producer on stage and screens both big and small. Cross returned to the road in January of 2016, six years after his last stand-up tour. Named one of the Top 100 Stand-Up Comedians of All Time by Comedy Central, Cross launched his Making America Great Again! tour in San Diego, California, and completed the U.S. leg in The Golden State in May 2016, having extended the tour due to popular demand. In the summer of 2016, Cross took his tour to Europe for the first time ever and also performed throughout Canada, including at the prestigious Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal. The April 22, 2016, performance in Austin, Texas, as part of the Moontower Comedy Festival, was filmed for a special bearing the tour name and is now currently streaming on Netflix. An audio CD entitled …America…Great, with slightly different material, is available now. His new series, Bliss, premiered on 10

Sky TV in the U.K. in February 2018. The inventive series is about a travel writer who has two families, and neither knows of the other’s existence. In January of 2016, IFC premiered the long-awaited third season of Todd Margaret, created by and starring Cross as an ill-equipped American who finds himself running the London sales office of the energy drink company for which he works. The original iteration, The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret, aired on IFC from 2010 to 2012. Cross toured in 2009 with a solo stand-up show in support of his New York Times Bestseller, I Drink for a Reason. That hugely successful comedy show was filmed at Boston’s Wilbur Theater for a special, entitled Bigger and Blackerer, which premiered on EPIX in April 2010 before being released on CD and DVD by Sub Pop. His previous comedy special, David Cross: The Pride Is Back, aired on HBO in 1999 and was named one of the 25 best stand-up comedy specials and concert films of all

A U D I E N C E

time by Rolling Stone in July 2015. Cross has released two other comedy albums—the Grammy Award-nominated Shut Up You F***ing Baby and It’s Not Funny. In 2003 he released the DVD Let America Laugh, a documentary film of his groundbreaking stand-up tour of alternative, indie rock clubs. Cross reteamed with his Mr. Show collaborator and co-creator, Bob Odenkirk, to create Mr. Show with Bob and David, a four-episode revamp of the iconic sketch comedy series, which premiered November 2015 on Netflix. He also had a guest arc on the Netflix breakout comedy Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt as lawyer Russ Snyder, who finds himself in an unlikely relationship with fallen socialite Jacqueline White (Jane Krakowski). In September 2013, David Cross and Bob Odenkirk released the book Hollywood Said No! Orphaned Film Scripts, Bastard Scenes, and Abandoned Darlings from the Creators of Mr. Show. Written with friend and fellow Mr. Show alum Brian Posehn, Hollywood Said No! is a collection of never-before-seen scripts, orphaned sketch ideas and reminiscences. In support of the book,

Cross and Odenkirk embarked on a multi-city tour, performing their first official stand-up comedy shows together since their sold-out national tour in 2002. In 2014, Cross released the indie film

Hits, which he wrote and directed. A black comedy about the nature of fame in the YouTube era, the film is set in a small town in upstate New York and stars Matt Walsh and Meredith Hagner. It first premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and then helped raise funds for its theatrical distribution via a successful Kickstarter campaign. In addition to a traditional theatrical release, the film was also available to fans across the nation on BitTorrent, where they were able to pay what they wanted to view it. On the big screen, Cross has appeared in the independent features Kill Your Darlings alongside Daniel

Radcliffe and Michael C. Hall, and the dramedy It’s a Disaster, opposite Julia Stiles and America Ferrera. Other film credits include Abel, Year One, Christopher Guest’s Waiting for Guffman, Men in Black and Men in Black II, Ghost World, Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Pitch Perfect 2, I’m Not There, and provided his vocal talents for several animated films, including Megamind, the Kung Fu Panda franchise and Curious George. On television, Cross reprised his beloved role as Dr. Tobias Fünke on the fourth season of Arrested Development on Netflix. During its original critically acclaimed, Emmy Award-winning run on FOX, Cross was twice-nominated as part of the ensemble cast for a Screen Actors Guild Award. Cross’s introduction to the TV scene came with The Ben Stiller Show, where Cross honed his comedy writing skills and shared a 1993 Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Writing in a Variety or Music Program. The original Mr. Show with Bob and David received three Emmy Award nominations for both Writing and Music & Lyrics. Cross also served as a writer and contributor for Tenacious D. He also wrote, produced and starred in the Comedy Central animated series Freak Show, which he co-created with H. Jon Benjamin. Cross currently resides in Brooklyn, New York.
