WELCOME! We are open for business! On June 13, The Kentucky Center took a big hit when a fire broke out in the main lobby ceiling. In the weeks that followed, the tireless efforts of our friends at Kentucky’s Finance and Administration Cabinet, working in concert with contractors and restoration companies, have brought us to where we are today. The doors are open, the theaters are ready and the show WILL go on. While there is still ground to cover before The Kentucky Center building is back at 100%, we are thrilled to kick off our 35th Anniversary Season with world-renowned artists, including Academy Award-winning actress Reese Witherspoon and music legends Lyle Lovett and Robert Earl Keen; wonderful family favorites like Broadway hits Disney’s Aladdin and A Christmas Story; Louisville Orchestra’s presentation Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban™—in Concert; exciting collaborations such as Louisville Ballet and Bourbon Baroque presenting Mozart, which features a world premiere work by Louisville Ballet Artistic and Executive Director Robert Curran; and milestone events like Dance Theatre of Harlem’s return to Louisville, with a celebratory 50th Anniversary performance on the Whitney Hall stage! Of course, we would be remiss to not mention the crown jewel of our anniversary season, the Kentucky premiere of Hamilton, coming in June 2019. We cannot express enough how grateful we are to our arts and cultural leaders, board members, and both city and state leadership for the love and support during this challenging time. Most of all, we are grateful for YOU! By coming to the performance tonight, you are helping support our mission to enrich our community by building lifelong relationships with the arts. Enjoy the show!

It’s about dancing to country music at a gay wedding. It’s about loving 12
your neighbor whether you have the same religion, skin color, or sexual preference, as long as they cheer for the same college football team (Go Vols!). From Dixie With Love is about leaving behind bigotry, but remembering the fried okra. Trae Crowder’s series of “Liberal Redneck” viral videos have been watched by more than 125 million people on Facebook and YouTube. Before them, I didn’t realize
I had made judgments. It’s funny as hell, thoughtful and moving for reasons you would never think you’d be moved by. And go see them on stage, you will be shocked and driven to hear them, but I caution you, wear diapers…you’re gonna need ’em.” ~ Whoopi Goldberg “Take it from this Hillbilly, these rednecks know what they’re talking about. It’s the most fun you’ll have without beer & fireworks!” ~ Morgan Spurlock “It’s become so convenient to label places “blue states” and “red states.” Those terms ignore millions of folks who live in these places. People like Trae, Drew and Corey. Don’t get me wrong, these boys are country as hell, but they step to the table with fresh voices and challenge stereotypes at every turn.” ~ George Wallace

The Kentucky Center presents
Henry Rollins Travel Slideshow Tour Friday, September 21, 2018 • 8 p.m. • Bomhard Theater, The Kentucky Center
In describing Henry Rollins, the
tendency is to try to squeeze as many labels as possible into a single sentence. “Rollins is many things,” says the Washington Post. “Diatribist, confessor, provocateur, humorist, even motivational speaker…his is an enthusiastic and engaging chatter.” Entertainment Weekly’s list includes “Punk Rock icon. Spoken word poet. Actor. Author. DJ. Is there anything this guy can’t do?” TV Guide has more concisely called him a “Renaissance Man,” but if Henry Rollins could be reduced to a single word, that word would undoubtedly be “workaholic.” When he’s not traveling, Rollins prefers to keep a relentless schedule full of work, with gigs as an actor, author, DJ, voice-over artist and TV show host to name a few of the roles that keep his schedule full. Rollins has toured the world as a spoken word artist, as frontman for both Rollins Band and Black Flag, and as a solitary traveler with insatiable curiosity, favoring road-less-traveled locales in places such as Nepal, Sri Lanka, Siberia, North Korea, South Sudan and Iran. Henry currently hosts a weekly radio show on L.A.’s renowned NPR affiliate KCRW, in addition to writing weekly 16
columns for the LA Weekly and Rolling Stone Australia. In 2013, after previously anchoring shows for IFC and National Geographic, Henry joined the History Channel’s H2 network as host of the TV show 10 Things You Don’t Know About. In 2014, Henry received the prestigious Ray Bradbury Creativity Award in recognition for his lifelong contribution to the arts, his passion for social activism, as well as his intense passion for the importance of maintaining books and libraries. Actor In 2011, Henry became the voice-over for the Japanese luxury car Infiniti, for television commercials in the U.S. and Canada. Recurring guest star in the FX television drama Sons of Anarchy as neoNazi villain AJ Weston. Starring role in the movie He Never Died from writer/director
A U D I E N C E
Jason Krawczyk (The Briefcase). Henry’s previous acting credits span more than 20 films, including David Lynch’s Lost Highway, Bad Boys II, and voice work for animated series including American Dad, Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time and others. Host of The History Channel’s H2 network show 10 Things You Don’t Know About. Host of the National Geographic television series Animal Underworld With Henry Rollins. Host of National Geographic Explorer special Born To Rage. Film critic and interviewer on The Henry Rollins Show (and, previously, Henry’s Film Corner) on IFC, the Independent Film Channel Spoken Word Performer Henry is well-known for his popular spoken word performances, or “talking shows,” as he calls them, which are a seamless (yet seemingly extemporaneous) mix of political commentary and personal anecdote, full of humor, outrage, pop culture, along with a healthy dose of skepticism. 2014 Keynote speaker at the LA Times Travel Convention. In 2013, Henry was chosen as the keynote speaker at the Association of College and Research Librarians Conference. Keynote speaker at California Library Association Conference. DJ Henry hosts a great mix of all kinds of music weekly every Sunday night on L.A.’s acclaimed public radio station KCRW. The show airs Sunday nights from 8 to 10 p.m. Pacific, and streams online at KCRW.com.
From 2004 to 2009, Henry hosted the show Harmony In My Head on L.A.’s now-defunct Indie 103.1 FM. His trilogy of Fanatic! books put Henry’s passion for music on display with meticulously annotated playlists from this show. Author Henry Rollins: The Column! appears every Thursday in the LA Weekly. Author of more than 25 books, including the Black Coffee Blues, Broken Summers and Get in the Van. Henry’s first book of photography, Occupants, was released in 2011 by Chicago Review Press, showcasing a stunning collection of photos and essays from Henry’s international travels. Released on his own 2.13.61 imprint, Before the Chop: LA Weekly Articles 2011–2012 compiles Henry’s first 100 LA Weekly columns in their original, unedited form. The travelogue series, A Grim Detail, A Mad Dash, A Preferred Blur and A Dull Roar, document Henry’s travels through the years 2006 to 2010, detailing trips from Los Angeles, to Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Europe. Music Before leading the Grammynominated Rollins Band, Henry made his mark as the frenetic frontman for legendary band Black Flag. Rollins Band performed at the 37th Annual Grammy Awards, and was nominated for Best Metal Performance that same year for the song “Liar.” Henry spearheaded the West Memphis Three benefit album Rise Above, which featured two dozen songs by his former band (Black Flag) played by his then-current Rollins Band line up.

The Kentucky Center presents
Hawktail Sunday, September 30, 2018 • 7 p.m. • Bomhard Theater, The Kentucky Center
Haas Kowert Tice asked the
question, “What if?” After forging their own brand of roots music—one grounded in timeless tradition, crafted by top-shelf musicianship and performed with jubilant comradery—what if this trio of America’s finest string players became a quartet? Brittany Haas (fiddle), Paul Kowert (bass) and Jordan Tice (guitar) own the sweat equity of a decade spent stoking the fires of their passion project. Haas, whose 2004 self-titled release instantly became the touchstone for a generation of old-time fiddlers, has since lent her sound to Crooked Still, Live From Here, Michael Daves—and David Rawlings, where she plays alongside Kowert, well known as Punch Brothers’ virtuosic bass player. Tice is a rare guitar player whose music showcases his unique identity and a particular knack for tune-writing. Haas Kowert Tice was a special road they could travel together. Where communication was intuitive, then innovative. Where musical curiosity was boundless and inspiring for each as writers, players and friends. Their 2004 album You Got This displays a breadth of acumen and ambition rarely heard on a band’s debut. Norwegian dance rhythms astride traditional Appalachian 20
folk, bluegrass woven progressively into fundamental notions of jazz and chamber music. But for all their success, they found themselves grinding hard through recording sessions for a follow-up record. “I felt like we were missing an element,” says Kowert. “The sound was incomplete.” “We recorded this collection of music first as a trio,” remembers Tice. “Upon listening back to those sessions we kept yearning for more rhythmic energy and robustness in the ensemble sound, so we cut the tunes again with special guests on mandolin and percussion before realizing that what we really wanted was a fourth member to round out the band.” Enter Dominick Leslie, the versatile mandolinist whose rhythmic sensibility has made him ubiquitous on the acoustic music scene (Noam Pikelny, The Deadly Gentlemen, Brotet). They had all already known each other for years. The trio wanted the rhythmic backbone he offered, and another plectrum to balance the dueling bows of bass and fiddle. His addition thickens the sound and tightens the groove, opening new creative doors. In short, Leslie is a great fit. Says Tice, “Because of the time we shared coming up in the same scene,
A U D I E N C E
being inspired by the same music, and collaborating in various projects, Dominick was able to instantly find a voice in our music, seamlessly filling it out.” “They have such an established chemistry as a trio, jumping into the mix felt natural,” remarks Dominick. Reborn a foursome, they recut the music for the next album. The release of Unless, in reality Hawktail’s debut, is certain to confirm that this quartet has found its wings. “It feels as though this is now a whole band capable of doing anything,” says Haas. “The music of Unless represents hours of creation, founded on our years as close friends. And I think you can hear that,” she continues. Kowert adds, “We strove to write strong tunes that could take us to different places while holding to a simple form, for a natural music that breathes. Melodies and basslines arrived together with a core sound, and arrangements seemed encoded in the tunes.”
With Unless, Hawktail has delivered an album of original instrumental music that showcases their unique talents. A mixture of recordings from the studio and
from shows, this album was written to be played live for people in a room. The inclusiveness of that extends beyond the speakers: a finger on the string, a rush of energy when you didn’t expect it—this is music made to be enjoyed.

The Kentucky Center presents
Eddie Izzard: Believe Me Tour Sunday, September 30, 2018 • 8 p.m. • The Brown Theatre
I
zzard’s first book, Believe Me, was released on June 13, 2017, and is a New York Times Best Seller. Writing with the same candor and insight evident in his comedy, he reflects on a childhood marked by the loss of his mother, boarding school and alternative sexuality, as well as a life in comedy, film, politics, running and philanthropy. Honest and generous, Izzard’s Believe Me is an inspired account of a very singular life thus far. Over the course of a thirty-year career, Eddie Izzard has proved himself to be a creative chameleon, inhabiting the stage and film and television screen with an unbelievable fervor. Born in Yemen and raised in Northern Ireland, Wales and England, he lost his mother at the age of six and that has affected the rest of his life. In his teens, he
22
A U D I E N C E
dropped out of university and took to the streets of London as part of a comedy double act. When his partner went on vacation, Izzard kept busy by inventing a one-man escape act, and thus a solo career was ignited. As a stand-up comedian, Izzard has captivated audiences with his surreal, stream-ofconsciousness comedy—lines such as “Cake or Death?” “Death Star Canteen” and “Do You Have a Flag?” have the status of great rock lyrics. As a selfproclaimed “action transvestite,” Izzard broke a mold performing in makeup and heels, and has become as famous for his “total clothing” rights as he has for his art. In Believe Me, he recounts the dizzying rise he made from the streets of
London to West End theaters, to Wembley Arena, Madison Square Garden and the Hollywood Bowl. Izzard is arguably one of today’s top comedians. He has toured his Force Majeure show—so far in more than forty countries worldwide and in four languages—English, French, German and Spanish—and played all 50 states of the U.S. With his brand of keenly intelligent humor that ranges from world history to historical politics, sexual politics, mad ancient kings and chickens with guns, he has built an extraordinary fan base that transcends age, gender and race. Eddie is currently in residence in Paris, where he is developing his brand new comedy show in French.
