Welcome to the 64th season of your Kentucky Shakespeare Festival!

We are thrilled to embark on yet another season with you – featuring 62 performances of 7 productions over 11 weeks!

For those of you joining us for the first time, we extend a heartfelt invitation to immerse yourselves in the experience and to return again and again throughout the summer. And to those returning – welcome home to another special summer together.

As we navigate through this era dominated by smartphones, streaming platforms, video games, and often isolating virtual offerings, it’s clear how vital human connection and shared experiences are. Last year the U.S. Surgeon General even sounded the alarm, releasing an Advisory on the Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation:

“Given the significant health consequences of loneliness and isolation, we must prioritize building social connection the same way we have prioritized other critical public health issues such as tobacco, obesity, and substance use disorders. Together, we can build a country that’s healthier, more resilient, less lonely, and more connected.”

While educating, inspiring, and entertaining through our programs, Kentucky Shakespeare works daily to build community that’s less lonely, healthier, more resilient, and more connected. Let’s revel tonight in the shared human experience of theater that unites us all!

We’re deeply grateful to our generous donors whose support allows us to continue providing this invaluable public service and to keep taking artistic risks. If you donate at intermission, please know your contributions are helping sustain and enrich your Kentucky Shakespeare. Your support helps “Keep Will Free” allowing us to extend our mission far beyond the stage of Central Park - through education outreach programs, community programs, indoor productions during the year, employing local artists, and more.

Please know you belong here, and we hope that the memories made here will last a lifetime. Thanks for joining us. Enjoy your magical evening under the stars!

ROMEO & JULIET

The Story

The opening speech really tells you everything (spoiler alerts did not exist ca. 1596), but: The feuding Montague and Capulet families are brawling in the streets, which Escalus, ruler of Verona does. Not. Like. And threatens punishment for.

BUT…Romeo Montague, though recently hopelessly in love with one Rosaline, sees Juliet Capulet at a Capulet party (which he and his friends Mercutio and Benvolio have crashed) and later that very night (there’s a balcony) they swear their mutual love and intent to marry despite finding out each other’s family name and all that implies. Romeo asks friend/mentor Friar Lawrence to officiate the secret marriage and the Friar (with reservations) agrees to this possible happy ending to the feud.

More family brawling leaves Romeo’s friend Mercutio dead, (thanks to Juliet’s cousin Tybalt). Tybalt, (thanks to an enraged Romeo) also dead, and Romeo, (thanks to Escalus and, to be fair, his own actions) banished from Verona. Before he has to flee, the newlyweds share a wedding night and swear to find a way to be together forever.

Her parents believe Juliet’s sadness is purely Tybalt-based and (in one strange grief management effort) arrange her almost immediate marriage to Count Paris. She refuses, they threaten to disown her, and in desperation she seeks the Friar’s advice. The Friar gives her a sleeping potion that will make her appear dead, after which she will awaken in her family’s crypt to be rescued by Romeo, to whom the Friar promises to send a message to hurry home. Most of this plan happens.

If you don’t want to know how it ends stop reading (and don’t listen to that opening speech...):

The Friar’s messenger is delayed; Romeo instead gets news of Juliet’s “death” and, devastated, purchases poison and hurries back to Verona to die by Juliet’s side. While breaking into the crypt he is interrupted by Paris, fights and kills him, drinks the poison, and dies kissing Juliet.

The Friar learns of the undelivered message, runs to the crypt, and discovers Paris’s body, but is unable to persuade the newly-awakened Juliet to leave Romeo. She stabs herself with Romeo’s dagger, their bodies are discovered, and the warring families swear to build a monument to the lovers and end the feud.

THE COMEDY OF ERRORS

The Story

The city of Ephesus is at war with Syracuse (real war, not just an Atlantic Coast Conference rivalry). The elderly Egeon has come from Syracuse to Ephesus regardless, desperate to find his lost son (and the son’s servant). He’s had enough sorrow after years ago being separated from his wife and his son’s twin (and the servant’s twin) in a shipwreck. Note for later: the son he raised took his lost brother’s name in his honor (the servant twin did the same) which may help with later confusion.

Egeon is arrested in Ephesus but given ONE DAY to come up with the fine (and find his son and wife if there’s time) or else [insert sound you make when you draw a thumb across your throat].

Antipholus of Syracuse (and his servant Dromio) arrive in Ephesus that same day. Wild, right? Instantly mistaken by locals for Antipholus of Ephesus (and his servant Dromio), they are entangled in a series of increasingly confusing exchanges with people who claim to know them, or need money from them, or be married to them. That sort of thing.

For example: Adriana, wife of Antipholus of Ephesus, forces him “home” for lunch. He and Dromio (of Syracuse – this is all confusing even to write) thinks someone is losing their minds: either them, or everyone in town. The odds are even.

Then Antipholus of Ephesus brings work friends (and his servant Dromio) home for lunch…

Before it ends there is new-yet-inconvenient love, an attempted exorcism, dinner with a courtesan, multiple violent financial disputes, a trip to the abbey, and both Dromios get repeatedly clobbered, but in a fun way. Spoiler: it’s a comedy, so all’s well, as someone once said, that ends well.

THE TEMPEST

The Story

It’s been about a dozen years since Prospera, ruler of Milan, got too deep into her studies and lost that position to her usurping brother, Antonio…with the sketchy assistance of Prospera’s enemy, Alonsa, Queen of Naples, and her brother, Sebastian. They put Prospera and her toddler daughter, Miranda, to sea in a rotten boat, leaving them for dead. But they eventually landed on an island where the witch Sycorax had once lived in exile, though now only her son, Caliban, remained, along with Ariel and other island spirits. Since then, Prospera has ruled the island, commanding Ariel and the spirits by the use of magic arts. Miranda has grown up seeing no other humans.

Prospera divines that her enemies are at sea near the island and takes the opportunity to exact revenge. She raises a magical storm and shipwrecks them (but assures Miranda that no real harm will come to the survivors and tells her the story of their arrival on the island).

At Prospera’s command, with freedom promised at the end of the day once Prospera gets revenge, Ariel invisibly leads the survivors around the island, toying with them: the Queen is separated from her son, Ferdinand, whom she fears is drowned; magical sleep allows Sebastian and Antonio to plot regicide; and Ferdinand is led to Prospera’s cell, where he and Miranda fall instantly in love. All according to plan.

Not according to plan: the drunken butler, Stephano, and jester, Trinculo, survive the shipwreck with a plentiful supply of alcohol and meet Caliban, who terrifies them (to be fair, they’re distinctly un-sober) and persuades them to kill Prospera so they can rule the island.

Prospera sets heavy tasks to test Ferdinand with the secret intent of drawing the two lovers closer together. Prospera eventually presents the young couple with a magical betrothal celebration but is distracted from this when she remembers Caliban’s plot.

If you don’t want to know how it ends, stop reading now!

Prospera vows to abandon her magic arts upon completion of her revenge. Ariel brings Alonsa and her followers to the cell, and Prospera, once more in the clothing of Milan, confronts her enemies…and, inspired by Ariel, forgives them. Naples and Milan, with the wedding of Ferdinand and Miranda, will be allies. Prospera frees Ariel and prepares to return to Milan.

MISSION

Grounded in the works of Shakespeare, we enrich communities through accessible, inclusive, professional theatre experiences that educate, inspire, and entertain diverse audiences.

VISION

To use Shakespeare’s truths and the power of the arts to transform lives. Shakespeare belongs to everyone.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Kentucky Shakespeare acknowledges we are situated on the traditional land of the Adena, Hopewell, Miami, Osage, Shawnee, and ᎠᎳᎫᏪᏘᏱ Tsalaguwetiyi (Cherokee, East) people. We respect their enduring presence and historical stewardship of these lands.

ANTI-RACISM STATEMENT

As artists and educators, we are committed to holding the “mirror up to nature,” while creating a safe and welcoming space at our performances, in the community, and in the classroom.

We recognize racism and inequality in our community and the country, and we commit ourselves to anti-racism. We believe that Black lives matter.

We commit to outreach and inclusion of people of all abilities, races, creeds, religions, genders, and sexual identities.

We acknowledge that we are a non-profit arts organization grounded in the works of Shakespeare and commit to exploring Shakespeare’s truths while never losing sight of the fact that not all experiences emanate from a white European vantage point.

We commit to deeply listening to our BIPOC community members, within and outside of our organization. We commit to learning, never being satisfied, and creating positive change – proactively committing our efforts and resources to building anti-racist, inclusive, equitable, and empathetic spaces and experiences for all.
