After winning her award Goulding took to the stage to perform a stripped back version of ‘I Need Your Love’ which she previously collaborated with Calvin Harris on and ‘Burn’ setting the audience alight by her fiery stage presence and making sure that everyone knows exactly why she won her award. Adele Hints At New Album ‘25’
Lily Allen Tops Album Chart With Sheezus.
Oscar winner Adele has caused speculation on Twitter that her third album is going to be released at the end of this year.
Lily Allen has topped the charts for her second time with the release of her third album Sheezus.
The 25-year-old singer who has not released an album for three years tweeted on her 26th birthday saying “Bye bye 25… See you later in the year x” and a picture of her with her thumbs up, which unsurprisingly has led to rumours that her third album will be entitled 25 and released later this year. She had previously hinted at the Grammy’s last year that she was in the early stages of working on her new album. The ‘Rolling in the Deep’ singer is well known for naming her albums after her age so this massive hint by the star herself is almost certain that an official announcement of her third album will soon be issued. Her previous album, 21, was the top-selling record in 2011 and 2012 and was the follow up to her 2008 debut album 19, has now sold more than 26 million copies worldwide. Both albums which cemented her career and worldwide star status.
The ‘Hard Out Here’ singer debuted at the top of the charts, beating Gary Barlow’s Since I Saw You Last, which fell to number two and Paolo Nutini’s Caustic Love rounding off the top three. The singer took to social networking site Twitter, stating: “yay !!!!!! number 1 album, thank you lots and lots everyone.” Allen won the race to the top spot after outselling Barlow by 10,000 copies, which was helped after a 24-hour promotion on Google Play that saw the album selling for 99p. The Official Charts Company announced that Sheezus was eligible for the top spot despite this promotion. Sheezus is Allen’s first record in five years, following her first number one album It’s Not Me, It’s You in 2009. This is the first release since Allen’s decision to end her retirement in 2013, after the singer announced she would be quitting singing to focus on her acting career.
If this album ends up half as good as her other albums we are definitely in for a treat and Adele will be set for world domination.
Elsewhere in the charts, the UK’s contestant for this year’s Eurovision, Molly Smitten-Downes saw her song, Children Of The University, climb to No 33, the highest climber of any British Eurovision contestant since 2011.

Diane Birch In modern society were pop reigns in the mainstream and rock continues to grab its listeners by the throat, it seems musicians have left soul and blues music on the backburner, except for Diane Birch. The Michigan based singer-songwriter takes these forgotten genres back to the forefront of the music industry, fusing together contemporary sounds with the whimsical tones of old school soul and blues. Having recently signed to Warner Music, Birch is set to release her new album Speak A Little Louder on the 12th May 2014 in the UK. This follows her debut release Bible Belt in 2009 which received raving reviews from acclaimed site The Rolling Stone. Stating her influences as The Beach Boys, The Cure and Fleetwood Mac among many others genres, the mix of sounds and melodies enables Birch to mould her own characteristic sound. A hint of blues, a dash of soul and a host of contemporary pop melodies embodies Birch’s work, enabling her to create a name for herself, a name sure to become a household staple. Like a rose among the thorn or a diamond in the rough, Diane Birch’s velvety sounds may differentiate her from the masses of music today, but isn’t that refreshing? Niamh Moore

Noughties Nostalgia What was happening in music a decade ago. The year is 2004, 12 months filled with the most bold, bizarre, yet brilliant antics the music industry has witnessed. We said goodbye to the ever-lovable sweethearts Atomic Kitten and Irish lasses Bellefire while an influx of youthful rock’n’roll scrambled from their bedrooms into the spotlight with indie-heavyweights The Kooks and pop-rock champions You Me At Six launching onto the scene, both bands now enjoying sold out arena shows a decade later.
Albums that defined 2004.
Green Day American Idiot
The year didn’t pass without its share of controversy with the term ‘wardrobe malfunction’ coined after the infamous ‘bare it all’ approach Janet Jackson gave to her Superbowl performance with Justin Timberlake. Controversy seemed to be a trait throughout live performances this year after Ashley Simpson adopted the dreaded term of ‘lip-syncher’ after her infamous performance on Saturday Night Live which seen the popstar dance hoedown-style after it was uncovered that the singer was using a backing track on live television.
The Killers Hot Fuss
Britney Spears also seemed to have quite a whirlwind year, the pop-singer getting married twice, the first time in Las Vegas to her childhood sweetheart Jason Allen Alexander, which was annulled only 55 hours after the ceremony. Niamh Moore

Peroxide’s Niamh Moore askes do women need sex-appeal to be taken seriously in the music industry? Why the hell are we still being constantly bombarded with videos of women in their underwear, swinging on wrecking balls, licking hammers in the buff and twerking in nothing but their birthday suit? I am fed up of women thinking they have to get their kit off to be considered by the ‘big bucks’ in the music industry. Why do they still find the need to prance about in their underwear just for the attention? Would everyone have gone as crazy over Miley Cyrus’ video for Wrecking Ball if the country-girlgone-wild performed the song in a less-provocative manner? Of course not, this is the music industry, a place where women are viewed as fresh meat, misogynist views rule the airwaves and women are positioned as nothing more than a sexual object for desire.
Now, it’s a chain reaction of singers that are being reeled into this misogynistic way of thinking. Two time BRIT Award winner Ellie Goulding was doing just fine before her quest to break America began her quest to wear the shortest shorts and the lowest cut tops. Of course, women should be proud of their bodies. Yes, we like to show it off and feel good. We should get to wear what we want, how we want and when we want. But, when it goes past the stage of doing it to look good, that is when it has gone too far. Women should not have to strip off just to sell records.
This is the music industry, a place where women are viewed as fresh meat.
So what if we aren’t size zero models with golden curls and a flawless complex rivalling that of a Barbie doll. Hard Out Here singer Lily Allen takes a stab at the music industry, her aim clear - showcase just how misogynistic the music industry actually is. I never thought I’d see “Lily Allen has a baggy –ahem-“ spelt out in balloons in a music video. But it’s eye-catching, it’s shocking and it only serves to emphasise how females are portrayed through the male gaze. If they aren’t Barbie, they’re chewed up and spit out. What about Susan Boyle? She may not have the typical ‘pop-star’ appearance but a standing ovation from music mogul Simon Cowell must

mean she done something right. Well, that was after his dismissive laugh when the singer took to the stage. Even television gives the impression its image before talent. No wonder the fresh pop stars of modern society try to outdo each other in terms of raunchiness. It can’t go much further, surely.
As Beyonce flaunts her curvy figure in a bikini while seductively crawling through the sand, to the delight of males all over the world, husband Jay-Z awkwardly positions himself beside her, fully-clothed with gold chains draped over his shirt. You know the drill Jay-Z, get that shirt off. Oh wait, he is a male. Next time he takes to the stage for a rap battle, I vote he does it shirtless. Or could Bruno Mars shoot his next video in only his underwear, please?
Editors Do The Talking Are you tired of the same festival headliners year after year? So is Laura Tompkins of Peroxide. Do we get excited about festival announcements anymore? The answer is no. Every year the same boring acts are announced as the headline acts. It is boring and needs to change. Not everyone likes the Kings of Leon, Kasbian and The Killers and they most certainly wont after they’ve seen that a million times at *inserts festival* across the UK.
Timberlake as he doesn’t play that often over here, so you can imagine our annoyance when we found out he is headlining V festival this year.
Although we might have got excited at Glastonbury headliners the Arctic Monkey’s last year, our enthusiasm to see them at Reading and Leeds this year is substantially lower. Reading This piece is making an appeal to festival and Leeds, although trying to be an indie/rock organsiers around the country to change the music festival, have the same acts every single festival line-ups. I don’t know how many times I year. Enter Shakari, Paramore, You Me At Six have purposely avoided seeing the Kings and Jimmy Eat World are now all of Leon at a festival where they are names expected on the lineup. “It the headliner. I would rather be Hello Reading and Leeds asleep in my tent. They have two organisers do you wonder seems that the songs that people have heard why you aren’t selling your same bands are being of, so someone please tell me tickets anymore? I can what makes them so special. tell you. You need to get regurgitated from different acts. Your lineups one festival to Last year we saw The Killers get more repetitive every jump into the headline spot at year. Throwing Mackelmore the next.” Isle of Wight festival, the first of into the mix this year makes the season, this year we see them no difference, it is so random, headling V Festival, which they have what was the point. I’m sure hipheadlined before but swapping places hop fans aren’t going to buy tickets to perfectly with The Kings of Leon, who have a rock festival just to see gone from V festival last year to Isle of Wight one act. this year. Justin Timberlake, The Killers, Kings of Leon, It seems that the same bands are being The Arctic Monkeys and The Stone Roses all regurgitated from one festival to the next headlined at a festival last year and are once without too much being said about it. But again headlining this year. now I have to give my honest opinion, it is so annoying. Is there any point in worrying about Do we want to be watching the same acts missing a big headliner at a festival anymore singing the same songs over and over again? The when they are just going to be announced next answer is no. Please festival organisers find us year at another. Last year me and my friends something new and exciting. Everyone wants to rushed to buy tickets for Wireless in London get excited about festival season again and right because we were desperate to see Justin now we couldn’t be less excited.

Naomi Rush “Be strong in what you’re doing and you’ll be just fine.” 12
Naomi Rush speaks to Peroxide’s Niamh Moore about the trials and tribulations being a female in the music industry can bring. She has been described as an “alternative-rock Kate Bush” and ditched the violin for guitar after hearing Avril Lavigne at ten years old. For Somerset singer-songwriter Naomi Rush, singing along to Disney songs when she was younger has transformed into her creating a name for herself along the South Coast. Gearing up for the release of her debut EP, Rush isn’t afraid to shine with a guitar, while remaining fully clothed of course.
is done. I wouldn’t go as far as sexualising or changing myself,” she adds. Relaxed, Rush shares stories of her live gigs. Causing quite a stir in the Southampton music scene over the past year, the singer has performed various gigs throughout Solent’s SMILEfest and in Southampton’s infamous venue The Joiners. “I had one guy come up to me and say: “I was blown away by your performance. You’re the best female guitarist I have ever seen.” The best female,” laughs Rush. “I didn’t take it to heart. Being a female performer is still out of the norm so people notice it which could be used as an advantage.”
Yet, with the advantages of The third year Popular female performances comes Music Performance the underlying pressures: “There is always the student at Southampton “There is the whole image Solent will not be thing. favourite bands as a young teen were Biffy Clyro and Reuben. They both did similar circuits and had been together for years. After years and years Reuben finally called it a day despite gaining a following they hadn’t manage to ‘break’ the scene. However Biffy managed to keep going and a few years after that actually did manage to make a ‘break’.”
Cloudi Lewis views herself as ‘a young singer/song writer’ this in itself is an understatement. Her voice and indie/folk sound makes her a strong contestant in the conquering of the music scene. Her lyrics and vocals allow the influences of Ben Howard and Laura Marling to creep Although the music industry is just into the mix making her an enchanting a difficult place to get into, Lewis performer. Paloma Faith
A Perfect Contradiction ‘Take Me’ pushes us back to the sixties with the feel we have just stepped onto the set of Hairspray. ‘Other Woman’ also fits in with her sixties sound.
Paloma Faith returns to the music world with her third studio album and like the past two albums she continues to do what she is best at displaying vocals that overwhelm her tiny physique. The album opens with ‘Can’t Rely On You’ which automatically throws the Pharrell influence out at you and as coolest man on the planet Pharrell is the producer of this song it has created the most polished and slickest song on the album. Paloma’s voice oozes soul and shows her Mowtown influences with her Duffy meets jazz style voice. ‘Only Love Can Hurt Like This’ is the only ballad on the album with its big band production and raspy vocals it makes it a stand out track and allowing Faith the honour of having comparisons between her and Amy Winehouse to be made. There is no doubt that Paloma Faith has one of the best female voices in the industry even though it seems she would have been more suited to the sixties era. Third track
The tragic heartbroken theme runs throughout the album but it’s no surprise with titles such as ‘Love Only Leaves You Lonely’ and ‘Taste My Own Tears’. However with ‘Happy’ singer Pharrell as her clear influence during the album it could have cheered her up slightly. ‘Mouth To Mouth’ is arguably the worst song on the album with her raspy voice becoming somewhat shouty and strangled in places whereas, the rest of the album Faith’s big voice is showed off and impressive, playing up to its strengths. Faith’s album takes a swerve down Adele’s route with her sad songs but mixing her Jazz style voice with the upbeat tunes makes this her best album so far.

Lily Allen
Kaiser Chiefs
The most talked about woman in pop Lily Allen makes her come back with new album ‘Sheezus’. The title track on the album, ‘Sheezus’ shows Allen’s aim to be the biggest pop diva slating all her rivals.
It was recorded in America, but Kaiser Chiefs’ new album Education, Education, Education & War emits a more British sound than their previous works.
Sheezus
Luckily the album sticks to what Allen does best with songs, giving the blunt truth like with her first single ‘Hard out Here’, rather the floaty yet boring second single ‘Air Balloon’. ‘Insincerely Yours’ makes sneers at celebrities and the celebrity lifestyle. The album is filled with snidey lyrics and electronic melodies which is exactly what Allen is known for she is not the type of star that sits back and sings about what she is told to. With ‘L8 CMMR’ referring to her bedroom antics with her husband, there is nothing she can keep quiet about. This album has more than enough to allow Allen her Queen of the Pop Divas crown back. Education, Education, Education & War
Taking on the role as coach on the UK’s The Voice to raise the band’s profile, frontman Ricky Wilson knew the album had to be good. Thankfully it was. Whether it be the title’s play on words of a Tony Blair speech, the nine-to-five drudging commentary in ‘The Factory Gates,’ or the self-doubting feel in lead single ‘Coming Home,’ the indie pioneers have overcome many hurdles, including the departure of lead songwriter and drummer Nick Hodgson, to create one of their most cohesive albums yet. From a band that have established a large following through anthemic choruses and ‘woah’-ridden lyrics, the indie-rockers incorporate their trademark sound into the ten tracks on Education with Misery Company’s chorus featuring nothing but Wilson’s manic laugh. It is essentially, the most Kaiser Chiefs thing that Kaiser Chiefs have done. Niamh Moore
Brody Dalle Diploid Love Former Distillers front-woman, Brody Dalle, injects the raucous punk feel back into the veins of the music scene with her debut solo album, Diploid Love. Her first musical release in five years sees Dalle accumulate her punk roots throughout the nine tracks while new influences and technology meanders throughout. It’s not The Distillers; breathe in the maturity and motherhood and exhale the smeared eyeliner and sweat. This is Brody Dale 20 years on. Opening with the furyfuelled ‘Rat Race’, Dale croons: “I’m going to burn this city down,” in her monotonous tone that has become characteristic of the singer. Rambling, distorted guitars, high energy and an anthemic chorus is what Dalle does best with crunching guitar chords and a poppy drum beat keeping the fury firing. Yet, the chorus sees the singer experimenting with different sounds, a sound that contrasts with the underlying punk vibe as brass sections harmonise with the Dalle’s melodies. This new musical direction interweaves its way throughout the record whether it be the Parisian sounding piano in ‘Carry On’ or the staccato violins featured in ‘I Don’t Need Your Love’ which perfectly highlight how Dalle has musically progressed over the years.
The aforementioned ‘I Don’t Need Your Love’ showcases Dalle throwing a curveball into the mix. Her distinctive raspy, Courtney Love-esque vocals transform into a soft croon, creating a moment of vulnerability on the album. Climaxing between beautiful and haunting, the eerie piano introduction and sparse percussion creates the canvas for Dalle’s lyrical depiction of unwanted love. Yet, the raw power and intensity of her punk roots is peppered throughout Diploid Love, with the track ‘Underworld’ slotting nicely into The Distillers’ back catalogue. It’s fast, ferocious and frenzied. Diploid Love sees Dalle bringing back the life-affirming lyrics and pure emotion, cementing herself once again as one of punk’s leading ladies. Niamh Moore

McBusted
Bigtopp
02 Arena London
Lennon’s Southampton
McBusted’s show is nothing but endless fun. Right from the very start when James Bourne and Matt Willis (former Busted members) enter the stage in the Delorean, to the giant flying UFO right through to the massive pair of boobs hanging above the stage. McBusted will take you back 10 years and remind you just much how fun life can be.
Crammed onto a stage not built for eight guys, ska-infused band Bigtopp unleash their massive sound to a crowd who are ready to show Southampton’s hidden gem, Lennon’s, how to dance, ska style.
The setlist is jam packed with hits, although mainly Busted ones, ‘Air Hostess’ ‘Obviously’ and ‘Crashed the Wedding’ are the stand out tracks although everyone in the crowd knows every single word to all the songs and are singing along like their lives depend on it. The moment where you don’t think the show can get any better McBusted move to the B stage which is a UFO to sing McFly hit Star Girl.
Thunderous brass notes threaten the foundations of the venue as the charismatic stage presence of front-man James Parsons encourages the high energy emitted from the crowd. Opening with crowd favourite Boomerang, an explosion of skanking dance moves sees limbs flailing left, right and centre. Interweaving old songs around new, they blast into a cover of Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know.’ It is barely recognisable in the midst of toe-tapping, reggae influences. It’s loud, lively and littered with huge melodies, receiving the loudest sing-a-long of the night.
The band are full of jokes, surprises and perfectly constructed chorography that makes you want to go to this show every night for the rest of your life.
As Parsons thanks the crowd “for coming down tonight and supporting live music,” it seems ska still remains a secret on the scene. Bigtopp may be an acquired taste, but it’s this taste that makes them breathtaking.
