CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION Hello, and welcome to the first chapter of your CHST course! I'll be your guide throughout the Construction Health and Safety Technician exam preparation course CHST. By the end of this course, you will have acquired both the tools and confidence you'll need to pass your exam. That is our plan, anyway. A lot of what happens is up to you. The CHST exam is considered incredibly important for construction workers specializing in the safety part of the business. In fact, you won’t be able assume the role of a Construction Health and Safety Technician without having taken and passed the test. To become a Construction Health and Safety Technician, you must meet certain eligibility criteria, complete the application form, and schedule the exam. In this audio course, you will hear how to complete every single step. We have one main section to cover here at the outset: course conventions and content. After that, we'll move on to the details of the exam and its body of knowledge. I'm very happy that you have chosen AudioLearn and me to guide you through this course. So, if you are ready to get started, let's begin! Welcome to the section on course conventions and content! I’m going to give you a brief overview of the topics I'll cover in this audio course; I will also discuss how the overall course will be structured. But first, a little bit about the exam. The CHST certification is awarded by BCSP: the Board of Certified Safety Professionals. A select few individuals in the health and safety sector of construction have a chance to sit for and pass this exam. Once they do, they can assume roles making them responsible for the health and safety of construction workers. This can be on a single project or even multiple projects of varying sizes.
1
Certification from BCSP is recognized nationally. This, of course, opens up many doors for you as you begin your career. Certification also provides those same benefits if you are looking to take your career to the next level. Regardless of your current plans, having the credentials of a Construction Health and Safety Technician demonstrates something important: you have the knowledge and skills required to keep construction workers safe and healthy on the job. Before I go through the course content, I thought I would let you know about some of the other certifications that BCSP offers. If you are looking for a long term career path, you are in the right place. You can decide if you’d like to further your study upon completion of the CHST qualification. The following is just a sample of what BCSP has to offer: The Certified Safety Professional Certification This one covers all industries. After completing this program, you’d be the one overseeing at least half of all the pro level safety duties. The Safety Management Specialist Certification Upon successful completion, you would have the management skills necessary to ensure that a business operates safely. The Associate Safety Professional Certification Much like the Certified Safety Professional Certification, you would be responsible for a minimum of fifty percent of pro level safety duties. This includes fire protection, regulatory compliance, hazardous material management, and much more. The Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician Certification Whether you’re in this role on a part- or full-time basis, you’d be performing occupational hygiene and safety activities. The Safety Trained Supervisor Certification Regardless of what leadership level you’re at in your organization, you’ll be eligible for this examination. While safety wouldn’t be your primary duty here, your knowledge would ensure you operate safely when on the worksite directing your crews. Of course, we’re focusing on the Construction Health and Safety Technician Certification at the moment. But I thought it would be helpful to recognize the other

examinations you can apply for once you pass this one! After all, your resume can only benefit from this. Now back to the matter at hand. In this course, I am going to walk you through the body of knowledge you'll need to pass your CHST exam. I will try to weed out all the non essential material and focus only on what you must know for the exam. This way, you won't be overwhelmed with information that you don't really need. So, with that in mind, let’s explore the structure and content of this course. To make it easy for you to keep up with the material, we have split the course content into twelve chapters. Then there is a thirteenth chapter that wraps things up and contains your final exam. These chapters are then divided into smaller sections. While that may seem like a lot, I will go over everything at a steady pace. That way you can absorb as much information as possible without being overburdened. At the beginning of every chapter, I will briefly introduce the topics I will cover. During this introduction, you can set up your notes so it’s easy to keep them organized. I should say right now that you should plan to take notes if you can. There may be times when this is not possible, but write things down whenever it is. After I cover a particular chapter’s body of knowledge, you will get a quiz. Typically, quizzes are near the end of each chapter. They are pretty short with a total of ten questions each. Everything you need to take a quiz is in the Follow Along PDF Manual. I’ll explain more about that in a moment. When the time comes, I'll advise you to pause the audio and take the quiz. Afterwards, you can consult the written answer key to check your answers. I will also discuss the quiz questions and answers in the actual lectures; that way, you can resume the audio and check your quiz answers with me if you want. Do whatever works best for you. I will end each chapter with a list of ten takeaways. Essentially, they are a summary of key points you learned in the chapter. These takeaways are a great way to help you remember the most important concepts from the lecture you just heard. Earlier on, I mentioned a Follow Along PDF Manual. Each of our audio courses comes with one of these supplemental study guides. They contain summaries of the key

information I'll cover in the course. You will also find supplemental resources that can point you towards additional valuable information. Use it in your preparation for the exam. Printing this PDF manual out before you start the course is the best way to go. If that's just not workable for you, use it in its digital format. You'll still get most of the benefits provided in the guide. Remember, the Follow Along PDF Manual contains the end of chapter quizzes and answer keys. It also contains a practice final exam we’ve put together for you. This final exam is a great way to prepare for the real thing. The practice test consists of one hundred questions, and it mimics, as closely as possible, your actual CHST exam. Before I move into the details surrounding the exam, I’m going to tell you which chapters cover which parts of the exam. By no means am I suggesting that you skip right to the sections you feel you struggle with the most. You should follow this course chronologically, in full, at least twice. This will ensure that you gain a solid understanding of everything you need to know for the exam. As with most people, repetition is a great way to really learn important information. So, without further ado, let’s get into the nuts and bolts of CHST. Chapter Two: the CHST exam. Chapter two is basically an extended introduction. However, it’s more focused on the exam side of things, rather than on the actual course itself. I will discuss construction careers, the exam, eligibility, registration, and exam scheduling. I’ll also give some exam prep tips, and I’ll explain the test center regulations, results policy, and retakes. Chapter Three: introduction to domain one. Domain one accounts for fifty-seven-point one percent of your score. I'll introduce the material that makes up domain one and what this means; add to that the knowledge and skills you’ll need to perform well. In Chapters Four and Five, I will cover the first twenty-two knowledge areas of domain one in more detail. These knowledge areas are about the various types of hazards in construction and their controls. This includes excavations, powder actuated tools, and much, much more.
4
Chapter Six: domain one, knowledge areas twenty three to twenty eight. This chapter contains material about the final knowledge areas that make up domain one. The specific knowledge areas are: The Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals, or GHS; •
Basic safety through design;
•
Risks associated with multiple trades working simultaneously in the work area;
•
Principles of ergonomics in construction practices and material handling;
•
Requirements, usage, and limitations of personal protective equipment;
•
And finally, basic testing and monitoring equipment.
Chapter Seven: the final chapter for domain one. Here, I will go through the skills you need for this domain. They include applying the Hierarchy of Controls, prioritizing hazards based on their level of risk, and more. Chapters Eight and Nine: domain two. Domain two is on emergency preparedness and fire prevention. This domain makes up ten point three percent of your total score and contains six key knowledge areas. In Chapter Eight, you’ll learn about them all. They are: •
Proper fire protection and prevention methods. This includes appropriate classes of fire extinguishers and inspection criteria;
•
Components of emergency action plans;
•
Common elements of response plans for environmental hazards, such as releases or spills;
•
Emergency response system;
•
Potential first aid or medical needs, including the availability of first aid supplies;
•
And finally, universal precautions, such as for preventing exposure to pathogens.
Chapter nine covers the skills you need for domain two and concerns planning for emergencies.
5
Domain three is all about safety plan development and implementation. This domain is worth seventeen-point one percent of your total score. In Chapter Ten, we explore the knowledge areas for domain three. There are eleven knowledge areas which cover everything from safety standards to inspection records. They include audits, the common components of safety plans, risk management, and much more. Chapter Eleven covers the four skills required for domain three. They are: •
To identify which health and safety programs are relevant to site specific safety plans;
•
To apply relevant standards to worksite conditions;
•
To identify trends related to incidents and accidents;
•
And to evaluate construction means and methods, and their impact on safety.
Chapter Eleven is also where we start to tackle the fourth and final domain. Domain four is about leadership, communication, and training. It’s worth fifteen-point five percent of your total score. Chapter eleven covers the six knowledge areas for domain four: •
Available training delivery methods and instructional materials;
•
Appropriate human behavior motivation methods and techniques, such as behavior based safety;
•
Communication strategies for distributing information;
•
When to consult with equipment manufacturers, suppliers, or subject matter experts;
•
Information confidentiality requirements;
•
And finally, the BCSP Code of Ethics.
Chapter Twelve covers the skills for domain four, which include applying the BCSP Code of Ethics. You’ll learn about coaching personnel to correct unsafe behaviors, accessing codes and standards, and much more. 6
Chapter Thirteen: You passed, what’s next? In the last chapter, I tell you what happens after you have successfully completed the CHST exam. I will also briefly cover what to do if you fail, but let's agree now that you won’t need to worry about that! Finally, you will take the final exam I mentioned earlier. It includes one hundred questions that cover everything you’ll learn throughout this audio course. Well, I am sure you understand we have a lot of topics to cover. Take your time when going through everything. This is your course which you should study at your pace. As I said earlier, listen as often as possible. And, always ensure you understand the entire chapter before you move on to the next. It won't help you to move on if a new chapter builds upon material from a previous one. I suggest that you revisit the test questions, particularly if you get some answers wrong. It is the best way to make sure you master the body of knowledge and achieve that passing score. Remember, you can learn a lot from your mistakes.

That's it for chapter one. If you’re ready, grab the Follow-Along PDF Manual, get comfortable, find a pen or pencil, and let’s start! Thanks for listening.
