Prostaglandins are a family of important chemicals in biology and biochemistry—found in many biological structures and tissues. These are a 20-carbon system of atoms that contain a cyclopentane group, a carboxylic acid functional group, and multiple hydroxyl groups. They are made from 20-carbon fatty acids, particularly arachidonic acid. There are several types of prostaglandins. One of these is shown in figure 122:
