MAJOR IN MUSIC TECHNOLOGY

The UAB Music Technology program is designed to provide students technical training and experience needed to enhance their musicianship as composers, arrangers, multimedia artists, producers, and performers. With five performance halls, two music tech labs, a 5.1 video editing bay, a 7.1 recording studio, and a new 250-seat movie theater, all state-of-the-art, UAB students have access to the best in training and facilities to prepare them for careers in the industry or advanced studies as music technologists. Courses include studies in film scoring, synthesis and sound design, game audio, multimedia development, and film editing. UAB is among a very few schools in the Southeast to offer AVID Pro Tools certification, and its faculty are the only Pro Tools certified instructors in the state of Alabama. Through audition and interview, UAB offers multiple Stevie Wonder Music Technology Scholarships, Audiostate 55 Music Technology and Jazz Scholarships, and UAB Music Technology Student Stipends.

MINOR IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP It is becoming more important for musicians to possess a level of business acumen equal to their musical and technological abilities in order to navigate the freelance world of a gigging musician, audio engineer, songwriter, producer, arranger, or multimedia artist. Understanding copyright laws, recording contracts, artist management, royalties, and performance fee structures are paramount and in many cases may determine the success of one’s career. Likewise, the ability to strategically incorporate all forms of social media for marketing and promotions has become as important as perfecting one's artistic craft. In partnership with the Collat School of Business and UAB’s Innovation Depot, music tech majors may pursue the Minor in Entrepreneurship, designed specifically to give students extensive business training and practice through courses, seminars, practicums, and internships. 2
