There are people who inspire poetry, because they are poetry. I don’t need more words to explain it; likewise, they don’t need to say a word to be poetry. Pilar Duque, Musas
throat The throat is the anterior part of the neck. A rift between two mountain peaks, a gorge (French for throat). The place for air to enter and exit. The place for nutrients to enter and —very rarely— to exit. The origin of voices and cries. The place that connects thoughts and desires. The road between two provinces. It reveals silence. It refrains crying. A place suitable for biting, vulnerable, alluring for predators, attackers and lovers. Vertical crack, openness in the Earth, openness in the body.
This is a choreographic work for three performers. Photographs of expression and I say this in the most definite sense possible, in the expression from the throat, from what is speechless to what is sung. We ourselves complete histories. We go through life collecting bits and pieces that we connect more to our own experience than to reality, and this magic is a response to the earthly things, we ourselves in transit, and to the fear we feel of passing by unnoticed, without our history or without the way we look at things. I anchor in how nice it is to know that we are at all times creating our own life and those of others. A person speaks from his or her own history. This contemplation is a good exercise for that. This is my choreographic tool. I choose elements that somehow traverse me and I give them sense in relation to the world that I perceive, but I leave it very open to be assembled by anyone that watches it. In none of my works I thought about dragons, but more than one spectator has seen them and next to them ships, hugs that were not given or mermaids eating plates.
In the scenes here presented, a throat that slips down a wall can be the gesture of someone who doesn’t want to use his or her hands to feel himself or herself. Another could be a neck trying to hold a pole because the hands would make everything too simple, and ultimately that body is vulnerable ands needs to tell it. Then some hands that make other bodies fly and…in this occasion there aren’t any motives. Struggle and love. These two great opposites that make the world more or less enjoyable. They show each other continuously a crossing, an entry to being and so a place where to express the union of thought and instinct. Confusion between a vertical crack in the rock and another one in the mouth. An existence where the only thing that is taken for granted is that what lies behind and we cannot see is sacred.
