AMALGAMATE (senior thesis project)
Contemporary design often excludes or designs for elderly alone which can contribute to their isolation. Universal Design principles can break down ageist boundaries and inform environments beneficial to all. Through investigations of spatial and material intersections, this project redefines cohousing and nightclub as spaces for people of all ages.

KIKUO SAITO
(performance center/ gallery/ artist & residence)
My design concept derives from Kikuo Saito’s painting Persian Hat. From the painting I recognized that there was an overlap of information from still to movement. Seeing the painting as a whole vs the moving components of the play throughout the page. This influenced the concept of tension between visually seeing verses the actual circulation of the space. Throughout the space, adjacent rooms sit next or ontop of one another, with clear glass eniterly through the space. This allows for the layering of each program, and the discovering of each component when circulating the space. The person experiencing the space must feel the tension of the showcase moments of theather or artist and residence, but not being able to reach the end goal until they circulate through the entire space. There is a sense of knowing but indiviual discovery through circulating the space. The space creates a contrast between the stillness of each individual program but movement & sweeping of circulation.

The photographs by Shinichi Maruyama layers movement of a performance dancer into one photo. Each image combines 10,000 individual frames snapped while dancers perform meticulously choreographed gestures. The result straddles the line between sculpture and performance art. “I tried to express the beauty of both the human body’s figure and its motion as well as the concept of time.”

TOREN
(multigenerational urban dwelling)
The dwelling concept is based on the interpolation of framed elements that are shared/active and enclosed elements that are private. This concept was informed by the investigation into the reupholstery methods used to overlap either the structural framework inserted within the enclosed foam or fabric or the solid surface inserted into the void framed components. Based on important program adjacency an overlap is created. Where the overlap occurs the enclosed solid spaces opens up to the shared framed space. The transition of the framed or solid space creates an opening which increases visual communication into the larger, more activated, common space. The enclosed elements create rooms while in contrast the frames act as boundaries for inserted shelves or hangers for clothes or hanging furniture.
SPACE WITHIN A SPACE The idea of space within a space allows for a shifting of solid to void, and can be interpreted as slotting, interting, or patching.

Through the spacial models, spatial taxonomies were used and implemented in order to create three variation of design language used in various locations. Through these taxonomies, program adjacencies were used to locate the location in which these taxonomies would appear. Then finally the change between solid, void in relation to rooms and shared space.

VENUS
(modular ACT tile)
The folding of paper helps to represent the scalloping of the shell. It’s purity, delecacy, and beauty. The cycle and repetition helps to be a reminder of who Venus is. Though sometimes thought of as erotic, and having a dark side, she also is seen as the mother. One who gives life and this continuous cycle or new life, as well as even her own cycle or falling for humans, for the brave, and bring ing herself to a human level. There’s something mesmerising in her actions and the complexity of her various personalities.
PLAN
LED mounted to upper ceiling
Lighting spine is to be located along the most opaque layer in each tile, following the curve of the tile. This will create strong contrast between the “froth and the despersing waves. LED strips will be inserted into spine which allows for easy removal of lighting when needed.

OBSERVATORY HOUSING (internship group project)
Discovery - Time - Network. Three simple words that drove and defined our project. We used the stars to guide us to discovery, the same way it’s been done for thousands of years.. This led us to incorporate the idea of discovery into our resort, and create a fully immersive experience for the end user. Next was the concept of time, and it’s role in the viewing of constellations as the earth rotates. During our study of the constellations we were inspired by the networks and connections of these stars, and used a similar idea to create a fully immersive, interconnected star gazing experience .
The stars as our guide. After researching how constellations change due to the rotation of the earth on a timed schedule. We identified the largest stars of specific constellations on the longest night of the year, the winter solstice, and aligned them with our resort. Since constellations appear on a timed schedule on the night of the winter solstice all the stars align with the resort at that time.Don’t worry though, the resort offers epic observing, and a mesmerizing experience for curious visitors throughout the year.

The shape of space. We took our chosen constellations and then explored them in 3D space. These stars acted as nodes and created volumetric forms, which were then as a starting point for our structures and drove the architecture.

Use what the sky provides. With extensive amount of rain on the castle every year we designed the structures to capture and harvest the rain water. This in turned created forms that used breezes to passively ventilate each space. In order to re-duce the amount of light pollution, to maximize the star gazers ability to see, we controlled all lighting to be focused directly toward the ground.
