B O S T O N M A R AT H O N BOMBING MEMORIAL MUSEUM *Selected by TTU Department of Design faculty for the 2018 IDEC Student Design Competition
DESIGN CONCEPT This space is conceptualized with the intention of restoring existence among those closely affected by the tragedy of the
Boston
Marathon Bombing. The design will theorize gestalt for coherence, as well as emotive and associative
romanticism
through
the
application of sustainable design. By utilizing the theory of gestalt, the viewer will feel at ease with positive emotions as they travel through the space. The design will bring a sense of closure and simplicity by filling a void of sadness, as well as taking an event that is so chaotic and turning it into something simpler and easier to understand. The design will focus on the rehabilitation of an individual affected by the Boston Marathon Bombing in any way.
The museum will be located and accessible from the John B. Hynes Convention Center in Downtown Boston off of Boylston Street, close to the location of the marathon's finish line. The museum will be open Monday-Saturday only during the Spring, and closed on observed holidays. The Courtyard will remain open to the public year-round. The main Entrance is on the south curtain wall next to the reception desk, with additional entrances from the Courtyard and lobby of the Convention Center. The targeted audience for this space are tourists, students, families and employees.
RESEARCH With Boston's culture in mind, I looked to the 9/11 Memorial Museum, the Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial, and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum for inspiration. I wanted to design a museum that would reflect on what life was like before the attack, in addition to remembering how this tragedy changed so many lives afterwards. With this in mind, I mimicked what Boston is like during the springtime through the Courtyard of my space. With tile similar to the look of pavement and three beautiful Cherry Blossom trees famously found in Boston Common during the spring, my intention was to imitate the good and beauty on the other end of the tragedy that occurred on that day. In addition, I incorporated a large marble wall behind the reception desk, as marble is largely used in a lot of old Boston architecture. I chose a blue marble with yellow veining for the symbolic colors of the Boston Athletic Association and Boston Marathon. Last, I incorporated the marathon course within the LED screen by shaping it as the elevation from start to finish, with a map of the course and surrounding areas of Boston covering the wall around the screen.

R E S I D EN TI A L DESIGNING FOR AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER – PHASE 1 DESIGN CONCEPT The first phase of this project will be to design a home for a young child with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The shell of a home will be reconstructed to fit the needs for a family with a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The home will accommodate the parents, Adam who has ASD, and sister Lexi. Adam will have a Safe Space to escape to, as well as a space for sensory integration. The intent is to produce a tranquil environment that will create an immediate sense of calm upon entering the home. The interior will be natural in essence, utilizing the calmness of water to bring a serene environment within the home. These design elements will impart a sense of peace and comfort in the lives of both the family and Adam.

R E S I D EN TI A L DESIGNING FOR AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER – PHASE 2 DESIGN CONCEPT The second phase of this project will be to design for aging in place. The home will suit an apartment for Adam, a bedroom for the parents, a guest room, and a painting studio in the basement for Adam.

Adam’s suite has been transformed into his own apartment. I have included an exterior door in his living room, which used to be his safe space. There are is couch and chair that fits four people comfortably, with extra banquette seating across where the television/music systems are located on the wall above. Adam’s original closet and safe space area has been transformed into a mini kitchen area. The countertops are not ADA height. This does not include all of the main appliances, but there is a mini fridge built into the lower cabinets, as well as a sink. There is also bar seating on the right side for Adam to eat his meals. A work desk has been added to Adam’s bedroom for working at home. *Note: the cabinets in the kitchen are not ADA height. The basement, originally Adam’s sensory space and home gym, has been transformed into Adam’s art studio. Because Adam enjoys painting and creating art so much, creating an entire room for this can give him the space he needs to do so. This also serves as his escape space, where he can feel relaxed while creating his art. The north wall is a library for inspiration and books on Art. The west wall is storage units for his art supplies; there is also storage under the center art table. There is a computer desk in the south-west corner of his studio for research, music, etc. His artwork is hanging on the walls of his studio.
