Days of Glory John Cacavas

The marching songs from the Revolutionary War are a forgotten aspect of American military music. Simple but stirring, the tunes were based on various folk songs, bugle calls, and drum cadences of the times. Usually playing as a prelude to battle, more often than not, the band was just a fife and drum. Days of Glory is an attempt to capture those heroic times through the musical style of the period. Conceived for wind band, the main theme is stated first by trumpets and drums, joined later by other sections and building up to an exciting finale. Much of the successful performance of this work will be due to the careful observance of the tempo indication. Days of Glory was given its first performance by the Baldwin-Wallace College Symphonic Band under the direction of Dr. Kenneth Snapp on January 11, 1964 for the Ohio Music Education Association Conference.

When peace like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to know It is well, it is well, with my soul. These lyrics were originally written by Horatio G. Stafford in 1873 after the tragic loss of his family. Hymnwritter Philip Bliss was so impressed with the experience and expression of Spafford’s text that he set the lyrics to music in 1876. David Holsinger scored the hymn for concert band in 1989 to honor the retirement of a principal from the Shady Grove Christian Academy. Holsinger’s arrangement is in the key of D-flat and states the tune two times. In the first setting, both brass and woodwind sections are delicately scored; the second setting of the tune is stated with a majestic brass chorale.

Program Amen!

Amen! takes on an upbeat, somewhat bluesy, gospel style, suggesting an impassioned preacher sharing some bit of good news. After an introductory “call to order,” our preacher (here depicted by the clarinet section) gives us the main tune over a series of simple, bopping quarter-note chords. Later, the full ensemble bursts out in a fit of joy - the choir and congregation have joined in, dancing and shouting in full agreement. The good news is driven home in the concluding coda over a series of plagal chord progressions, and one final joyful shout.

American Riversongs Pierre LaPlante

American Riversongs is based on traditional and composed music of an earlier time, when the rivers and waterways were the lifelines of a growing nation. American Riversongs begins with a rousing setting of “Down The River,” followed by an expansive and dramatic treatment of “Shenandoah,” or “Across The Wide Missouri,” as it is sometimes called. After a brief transition, a brass band is heard playing a quadrille-like version of Stephen Foster’s “The Glendy Burk.” As “Glendy Burk” travels along, a second theme is introduced by the piccolo, flutes and tambourine. The second theme is based on a Creole bamboula tune that probably originated in the Louisiana delta region. The bamboula theme is marked by an incessant syncopated ragtime rhythm and used to good effect in the coda to bring American Riversongs to a rowdy, foot-stomping close.

From the hit Pixar movie, this is an entertaining arrangement of the stylish theme. A combination of spy/adventure music from the 1960s mixed in with “cool” jazz, The Incredibles quickly became a student favorite.

Terrence Melbourn Director of Bands Terry Melbourn has been teaching for 33 years and has served as the Director of Bands at Clarendon Hills Middle School since the school opened in 2000. Under Mr. Melbourn’s direction, the CHMS bands have consistently received superior ratings at district and state festivals. The CHMS band has served twice as a demonstration band at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic. The CHMS band has been invited to the University of Illinois Superstate Band Festival five times and was selected as honor band in 2009. In 2010, the CHMS band was selected to participate in the Music of All National Festival in Indianapolis. Mr. Melbourn received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from the University of Illinois, and a Master’s of Music Education from VanderCook College of Music. He completed a fellowship at Northwestern University and earned his National Board Certification in 2003. In 2010, Mr. Melbourn was named a Chicagoland Outstanding Music Educator and was awarded the Cloyd Myers Memorial Award for Excellence in Music Education in 2015. He is a member of the Illinois Grade School Music Association and has served as Vice President since 2010.

Richard Lehman is the Director of the Clarendon Hills Middle School concert band, jazz band and 6th grade band. He began teaching at CHMS in 2006. Before his time in Illinois, he taught high school band in Pennsylvania and was an adjunct percussion teacher at Lycoming College.

Mr. Lehman remains active as a performer; he is a member of the percussion section in the Northshore Concert Band. He has previously performed with the York Symphony Orchestra, Nittany Valley Symphony Orchestra, Penn Central Winds and the Sacred Wind Ensemble. Mr. Lehman has also guest conducted honor bands in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Maine.

To The Clarendon Hills Middle School Symphonic Band: On behalf of the Community Consolidated School District 181 Board of Education, administration, and our entire community, we extend congratulations to you and the Clarendon Hills Middle School Band on the honor of being selected to perform at the prestigious Illinois Music Educators Association Conference. We are proud to congratulate the entire team of students and staff who together have earned this outstanding accomplishment. District 181 is fortunate to have an exceptional teaching staff, students who come ready and eager to learn, and a community that passionately supports the arts. Your achievement has demonstrated how these pieces come together in a way that is truly exceptional. We recognize the value of programs like music education, which not only provide an academic benefit, but also allow students to express themselves, to experience teamwork and collaboration, to demonstrate responsibility, and to feel the thrill and joy of live performance. A band program within a school district begins with vision, leadership, and collaboration by the directors. In Community Consolidated School District 181, we have all of these. Terry Melbourn and Rich Lehman have a vision for the complete performance by each of their students. When joined together, these individual musicians become one unified sound. Mr. Melbourn and Mr. Lehman lead the Clarendon Middle School bands with the highest commitment, devotion, and enthusiasm. Students thrive through the outstanding communication, discipline, technique and specific feedback that are provided. The collaboration among the directors throughout the district is unlike anything I have seen in my years of education. Teachers Nancy Golden, Laura Stibich, Janelle Foulk, and George Andrikokus have all enriched the lives of so many students through their love of teaching kids music and willingness to support and learn from each other. Thank you for providing this wonderful opportunity for the students of Clarendon Hills Middle School. A well-rounded education must include music for our students and the very best music educators teaching them.
