Changi Airport Group, T2 Office This was one of the first interior design pitch I was assigned to during my practice in East 9. The client, Changi Airport Group, was refurbishing one of their office spaces in Terminal 2 as they were preparing to also change their circulation layout for the new Jewel Terminal. I had the experience to directly create the design concept under the principal architect’s supervision as well as produce the complete set of presentation drawings for the design pitch. The project was later awarded in June 2017.

The design concept is inspired by the mechanics and form of a jigsaw puzzle. The jigsaw puzzle is a representation of TEAMWORK. As a single piece, it is unique but yet it forms a close knitted relationship with other pieces to complete the picture. Each individual piece has its role and place but cannot exist on its own. The idea of TEAMWORK is also manifested in the layout planning which strives to foster a work culture that values collaboration, promotes sense of community and belonging.

The Centrepoint, Shopping Centre This was the longest term project I had the opportunity to work on during my professional practice in East 9. I was directly involved since the start of the project from the design competition all the way to completion on April 2017. Through this project I experienced on how to directly run and manage a project under supervision of the senior architect. From design pitch, design development, material selection, producing tender documents, authority submissions of the various departments, coordinations between other consultants / suppliers, running contractual matters of the project, as well as direct coordination with contractors during construction.

The overall design concept and brand for the mall’s renovation is as shown on this concept bubble diagram. The general idea was to take in all the context of its existing surroundings and resolve the issues at hand with innovative design solutions. The scope of work is to refurbish the interior of the mall and reconďŹ gure the retail units by converting big anchor tenancy units into smaller units with attractive shops and restaurants. The project itslef is mainly interior design work, however the biggest architectural alteration was creating a focal point plaza from the 1st storey pedestrian level al the way down to B2 where the undergound link to the MRT station.

Akasaka Japanese Steak and Ice Cream The opportunity for me to do this project arised during my break in Jakarta when I was doing freelance projects. The project is an F&B unit within a mall at the city of Semarang, Indonesia. The client wanted to open a second branch of their restaurant, they also have a branch in Central Jakarta. For this project, I got the opportunity to do an F&B interior ďŹ t-out project from initial design, construction drawings, site coordination & management, up until project completion.
Project Year / Type : 2017 / F&B Location : DP Mall Semarang, Indonesia Site Area : 109.65 m2 Scope : Design & Build (Freelance Project) Role in Project : Design Concept + Layout Architectural Design Interior & Furniture Design Presentation Production Material Selection Construction Drawings Production and Submission Site Supervision & Project Manager
For the concept of the design, I took into account several issues given. The location of the restaurant itself is within a lower-middle class range mall and their target customers are local family / young adults at the area. Therefore they wanted a specific type of design where it must not give the impression of a very pricey restaurant but would also like for the design to be classy but fun at the same time. The client would also like to bring in some design element from their restaurant branch in Jakarta, which I noticed that their focal point were these multi-colored umbrellas hanging from the roof ceiling and that’s where the customers would like to sit and take pictures. I took the idea of having colorful umbrellas but decided to use the Japanese paper type umbrellas to give it more authenticity. Also instead of hanging them in the ceiling, I wanted the umbrellas to be a feature wall element so I designed them to be displayed on the wall. Other feature walls are designed by arranging wooden planks in a “V” shape in an unfinished / de-constructed pattern as a statement of an “un-finished yet polished” look. This combined with exposed concrete wall and light bamboo wood color makes the right combination of a Japanese influenced, classy yet fun design.

The idea of the layout was to create various types of seating experience. The standard seating is 1 table unit for 2 pax which can have the flexibility to be combined / separated into clusters for 4 / 6 / 8 pax. Apart from the standard seating, there are also the high table- bar stool type seating, bench seating, and a sunken table area for large groups who needs more privacy. The main circulation corridor is defined by laying patterned hexagonal tiles in contrast to bare exposed concrete flooring.

St. John s Home ’ for Elderly Persons This was another design competition for an elderly home located in Singapore. I was involved during the design concept and presentation production along with the team. The objective was to create a cosy home for the elderly to have a healthier and better life through the impactful experience of aspirational architecture design for living and activities. The goal was also to create an inclusive community through design by encompassing universal design principals.

A new system of artistic creation has been adopted to embrace the aesthetic of variety, pluralism and contemporary composition with balance, harmony, and proportion. The faรงade design is rendered with mixture of raw tradition and new materials and expressed in a contemporary modern style. The facade fronting the main avenue, is embellished with modern raw concrete panels on one side and contemporary glazing on the other. The raw concrete materials exude the ethos of a charitable sheltered home. The dynamic contemporary glazing element exude vibrancy and happiness. The exterior along the sides presents a more traditional and natural tone with its wooden textures. The timber look-a-like screen are randomly-spaced to give a modern touch. The product is a combination of functionality and imagination. The faรงade articulation has its functional and aesthetical value by using the plan of light and shadow to create a new kind of brilliance The pavilion's dynamic forms at the cummunal open space is desinged with a twist of curves as an injection of surprise and contrast to the linear block. Social spaces are delineated through the use of soft and organic curve, designed to meet the dual needs of residents while giving expression to the beauty of harmonious architecture. It is paired with the soft organic landscape to create a complementary union with the traditional horizontal and vertical lines.
China Square Central, Shopping Centre This is a proposed additions and alterations (A&A) project by Frasers for a shopping centre at Cross Street, Singapore. The goal was to create a fresh and new concept for this historic yet outdated mall as well as to reconďŹ gure the layout of the retail units with the architect on board to attract a wide variety of tenants and visitors. For this project, I was involved in the design tender process as well as the design development stage once the project was awarded.

RED – Cultural and symbolical reference for China, good luck, prosperity, China Place logo and “Samsui Women” hat wear SQUARE – Concept of Square, China Square Central's identity, social communal gathering place
The design concept was inspired and derived from the historical context of China Place. Through the collaborative discussion on various development branding with the client, retail planning and design concept, we have established 3 historically related elements as the design impetus: RED, SQUARE and HERITAGE.
HERITAGE – Architectural and historical heritage reference, juxtapose of the new and the old

The scope of the additions and alteration consists of reconfigurating the retail levels of this mix-used building, which are at B1, 1st and 2nd storey. The 1st storey also has a 24hr through block link as a connection passageway for pedestrians. Our concept as the ID of the project was to create a variety of precincts according to its groups of tenancy and overall theme of the mall. Each precinct will have its own name and theme to its design, all of which relates back to the three elements of RED, SQUARE and HERITAGE for the design concept.

Catholic Archdiocesan Hub This is the proposal for a design competition by East 9 for the Catholic Archdiocesan Hub at Upper Thomson Road, Singapore. In which during my professional practice, was involved during the production process of the design competition. The objective was to optimise the church owned land for institutional purposes. It intends to build on a prime freehold site an iconic, integrated facility to accommodate a home for retired priests to lead an active life; an archdiocesan centre for the formation of Catholics along with its supporting facilities.

RAZOR BARBERSHOP The opportunity for me to do this project arised during my break in Jakarta when I was doing some freelance projects. The project is a retail unit within a mall at Central Jakarta. The client wanted to relocate their barbershop unit from the 3rd storey to the ground oor with a brand new look as their existing design was quite outdated. For this project, I got the opportunity to do a retail interior ďŹ t-out project from initial design, construction drawings, site coordination & management, up until project completion.

The concept for the design was born from the problems and existing conditions of the project itself. The barbershop was originally located on the 3rd floor of the mall and was to be relocated to the ground floor, therefore the client had a very tight budget for this project and wanted to re-use as many elements from the pre-existing barbershop unit which was a challenge due to its very outdated look. The existing condition of the new unit at the ground floor was a slightly smaller space with a much lower headroom (upper slab height is 2.5 meter AFFL).

Arising from the issues and pre-existing conditions at hand, the design concept came to be a raw industrial feel mixed with a touch of playful accent colours. The finishing of the space is exposed concrete wall and exposed slab soffit due to its very low head-room with wood textured furnitures and industrial inspired accessories such as lamps etc. To play a bit with the design, I integrated exposed cabling, pipes and ropes painted in washed blue and red tone to symbolize a barbershop’s iconic colour.

The front facade design was inspired from a semi-polished industrial look. The exposed red brick look is achieved by using look-a-like tiles with a semi-glossy ďŹ nish. The composition of the facade is also mixed with an element of painted corrugated steel sheets to match the shopfront glass design.

Several items that the client requested to be re-used for budget reasons are: front signage, barber chairs, waiting lounge chairs, oval mirror, and hair-wash station. The design of the space and the new furnitures are meant to enhance and give balance the out-dated looks of the re-used items. The whole complete design is to give it a more trendy feel to an industrial-style look, ďŹ t for a gentleman’s barbershop.
BMJ Paper Factory Office This design tender is for a paper factory company in Indonesia named BMJ, they are planning to build a new office HQ building in the middle of their factory land. For this project I was involved from initial study of the design concept, layouting, modelling, production and design presentation. This project was the first Design Tender during my work in my first company where I had the opportunity to brain-storm, propose the design and work directly with the principal architect in charge.
Project Year / Type : 2014 / Office Building Location : Karawang, West Java Area : 4025sqm Scope : Design Tender (Morphasia Design) Role in Project : Design Concept + Layout Presentation Production
The idea for the design concept came from the nature of paper and viewing it as a 2 dimensional plane which has a purpose and function. It is also inspired by De Stijl movement. The design of the building adapts from planar surfaces and how every surface plane has its own function and purpose. A balance between solid and transparent planes to create a well-composed visual connectivity between outdoor and indoor spaces, as well as taking advantage of every surface of the plane to have its own performance of use. All these surface planes are being stacked together like pieces of paper to create an integrated and exible ofďŹ ce building.
1ST STY PLAN entrance and circulation
2ND STY PLAN office/work space

3RD STY PLAN filing/operations/storage

The concept for the layout of the interior is “flexibility in spaces”. To do this, we also adapted the same concept of surface planes and how they can perform between each room. Each room is flexible and inter-changable according to the need of the space at the moment. Office space can transformed into a meeting room, rooms between management and staff can be switched from private to communal. All is achieved by moving the surface planes of the wall between rooms with and integrated sliding / swing system.
