Our girl battles Locked-In Syndrome and won’t give up
By AUDREY ELLARD WALSH CATHERINE is a fighter — she’s not giving up and we’ll never give up on her. They were the emotional words of Pat O’Leary, who after six long years of hospital and nursing home care, finally welcomed his beloved daughter Catherine home to Carrigaline yesterday. Catherine, a mother-of-one and a former restaurant manager originally from Ballincollig, has suffered from Locked-In Syndrome since she underwent surgery on a brainstem tumour in 2008. She is paralysed from the waist down and can only communicate by blinking — once for yes, and twice for no.
