Blarney Street hero praised for saving her neighbours By AUDREY ELLARD WALSH
“WE all look out for each other on Blarney Street — Angela is a prime example to every citizen to keep in touch�. Tom Coleman, chairman of Blarney Street and Surrounding Areas Community Association was speaking about local woman Angela Marshall, DERYH who saved her elderly neighbours from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning in their home when she discovered them unconscious on her daily visit. Mr Coleman said Angela was a prime example to every citizen to keep in touch. Eileen and Noreen Naughton are now recovering in hospital from the incident. Angela said the one positive that had come out of the experience was that friends and neighbours were buying carbon monoxide alarms. � See page four.

Schools out as teachers take to picket line By AUDREY ELLARD WALSH
MORE than 40,000 secondary school pupils in Cork remained at home today as 2,200 teachers across the city and county took to the picket line. Members of the ASTI and TUI protested in opposition to Junior Certificate reforms which would see them correct 40% of their own students’ assessment — with another strike day threatened for January. TUI President Gerry Quinn said: “A system of teachers assessing their own students for State exam purposes will significantly change the relationship between the teacher and student. “We agree with the Minister that new modes of assessment such as practical work and portfolios are an important development.
