Warning: Don’t use fire alarm batteries in toys By AUDREY ELLARD WALSH
DON’T use fire alarm batteries for new toys this Christmas — even if Santa forgets to bring them. That was the message from Cork City Fire Department who are gearing up for the festive season. Fire Prevention Officer David King said that safety preparations should begin now. “We’re most vulnerable when we are asleep so unplug everything, put up a spark-guard on the fire. “Close all room doors so that if something does happen at least the door will hold back the flames and smoke for a while.” Key issues include care against overloading electrical sockets and the need to install Carbon Monoxide alarms. On the roads, drivers are advised not to use phones. Station Officer Irene Wallace said; “It only takes a split-second and you could wreck other peoples’ lives forever.” ● See pages 10 and 11 for more.
