Lifesaving plan after sisters escape death Man, 55, killed in motorbike tragedy

NEAR-tragedy has led to a potentially lifesaving initiative in Blarney Street with the announcement today of the provision of smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors for all homes in the area. Elderly sisters, Eileen and Noreen Naughton, who live on the street, are still recovering from carbon monoxide poisoning in their home earlier this month. A neighbour raised the alarm when she discovered their door locked as she made her regular Saturday morning visit to them. Today’s initiative involved An Garda Siochána, Age Action, the HSE and fire safety companies Apex and EI Electronics, who have donated an initial batch of 50 alarms. Tom Coleman, Chairman of Blarney Street and Surrounding Areas Community Association, said it is hoped this pilot initiative will spread: “Action speaks louder than words. Raising awareness is important but action is now being taken with alarms being funded, supplied and physically fitted in homes from today.” Tom Butler, Regional Manager for Apex Fire in Munster, said that his company have donated an initial 50 alarms with discussions to follow about more. “When I heard about the recent incident I approached Gardaí saying that I would like to do something to raise awareness,” he said. “Carbon monoxide is a latent killer. Because it is odourless and colourless it is important to be aware and ensure that windows are opened to provide air circulation and most importantly of all, to install a CO detector.” Superintendent Con Cadogan of Gurranabraher Garda Station, who are supporting the initiative, is encouraging people to learn from the ● Continued on Page 2

Sean Coleman, of Cairn Court, died when his motorbike was in a collision with a car at Scartbarry, on the Fermoy side of Watergrasshill yesterday afternoon.
