VANDALISM which resulted in €5,000 worth of damage to a Ballyphehane park has been condemned as “mindless” by a local city councillor. The burning of a skate ramp at Tory Top Park in recent days has resulted in €5,000 worth of damage. The fire was reported at the park on Thursday night with one appliance from Anglesea Street Fire Station attending. The large modular ramp unit has been fenced off and will be removed in the next few days due to the damage of all internal support structures. The timber supports of the ramp were set on fire. Stephen Scully, Administrative Officer for Recreation and Sport Section City Hall, confirmed that the ramp “will not be replaced in the short term due to the cost involved.” Cllr Tom O’Driscoll deemed the destruction as “mindless.” “It’s terrible to see such an amenity destroyed for no good reason.” Cllr O’Driscoll lamented the waste of money in the wake of the crime: “At a time when resources are scarce for the city council, it is a great shame to see something like this happen.” Tory Top Park is the site of Cork’s first skate park, built in 2006 at a cost of €40,000.

of every crime in the city. She said: “Since November 17, we have made calls to victims of 700 crimes which have happened since then. It works out at an average of 100 crimes a week, but some weeks are busier and others are quieter.” Gardaí say however that the
number of crimes in recent months is not higher than other years. “After a crime happens, all the injured parties get calls from our office. This gives us the opportunity to pass on information to them and it also ● Continued on page two.
