■ Audrey Ellard Walsh THE Mayfield community was today shocked and saddened by the sudden death of local volunteer Rosarie O’Leary.

Rosarie’s tragic loss comes shortly after she had been nominated for a Mayfield Community Volunteer Award. The awards, which recognise excellent in volunteerism and community spirit, marked Rosarie out for her vital work with Mayfield Youth Café. The Youth Café, based in Kerrigan Tyrell Hall, provides an important space for young people aged 12 Rosarie O’Leary. years and upwards. Working with Cork City Council and Cork City Partnership, Rosarie supported and guided the young members organising events every Friday evening. Passionate about her work, Rosarie, who was in her forties and mother to a teen boy and girl, would also spend the summer months fund-raising and organising activities and day trips to local beaches as part of the local summer scheme. “For many children this was their only summer holiday” said Eddie Carey chairman of the Mayfield East Community Association. Mr Carey remembered Rosarie’s excitement at being recognised by her peers. “I was only speaking to her on Friday and she was telling me she was so delighted and surprised to be nominated for a community award. “The Community Association would like to express our deep sympathy with Rosarie’s family. She did unbelievable work for the youth of the area. She will be sincerely missed.” .See page 10-11 for citation.
