MINISTER Simon Coveney says Catholics should feel free to support marriage equality because a Yes vote would be based on “very Christian values.” Minister Coveney was speaking after the Catholic Primate Archb i s h o p E a m o n M a r t i n wa r n e d against a Yes vote and said the traditional view of marriage should be held up as “special and unique... and worth protecting.” The Archbishop said a Yes vote would lead to “a very definite break with human history and with the natural institution of marriage. “We end up using the term ‘marriage’ for something that it is not.” In response, Minister Coveney said: “I take my faith seriously. I am

■ Ronan Bagnall a regular mass-goer. I don’t think this should be an issue that Catholics are uncomfortable with. It’s about compassion, generosity and support for a section of society that has essentially been discriminated against by the State. “These are very Christian values. It’s about recognising equality and reaching out to a group of people who are looking for recognition. “My family, my children, my marriage will not be affected by a Yes vote. This is a chance for us to say that modern Ireland values everyone.” ■ See Page 9.
