EU funds Port move €12.3m will help economy in region ■ Ronan Bagnal
EUROPEAN funding of €12.3 million has been allocated to the Port of Cork to enable it to begin its €100 million move to Ringaskiddy and deliver major economic benefits to the region.

Fury on first day as bridge closure causes chaos TWO months of this will be madness. That was the verdict of frustrated motorists, who faced major delays at rush hour last night, on the first day of the Clontarf Bridge closure. And they fear a summer of traffic chaos, with maintenance works scheduled to con-

The EU monies have just been allocated from a multi-billion euro fund known as the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) — Transport Sector, which will allow the Port to proceed with phase one of its move to Ringaskiddy. The Port recently received planning permission to move its container facilities from Tivoli to Ringaskiddy — a decision which will allow it to expand its business. “This funding will assist in ensuring the Port of Cork can meet future connectivity needs and will support the development of the wider regional and national economy which is of key importance to Cork,” says Denis Healy, manager engineering services, Port of Cork. “The funding will be invested in the first phase of the Ringaskiddy Port Redevelopment Project which was given the green light by An Bord Pleanála in May.” Launched last year, the CEF generated 700 applications totalling €36 billion of requested funding — projects with the highest European added value, while guaranteeing a balanced distribution geographically were selected. MEP Deirdre Clune said: “This is incredible news for Cork and reaffirms the Port as a serious player in the European market.”
