Drugs bust in Glen
Clontarf closure adds to motorists’ stress
GARDAÍ seized heroin with a street value of €70,000 during a major drugs bust at Glentrasna Drive, The Glen, yesterday evening. A man in his 50s was arrested at the scene. The seizure was made as part of an ongoing investigation by local gardaí, and was carried out by the Mayfield District Drug Unit, the Divisional Drug Unit and the Dog Unit. It is believed that the man will be released today, and a file will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). This was the second major drugs bust in Cork this week, after €20,000 worth of cannabis was seized in Douglas on Tuesday.

CORK business owners have lobbied the Gardaí to put more staff on the beat at peak travel times to help speed up traffic flow along the quays.
100,000 bike trips! THE National Transport Authority is to look at expanding the Coke Zero Bikeshare scheme later this year, writes DAVID LINNANE. More than 100,000 trips have been made on the bikes since the launch in December 2014. There are also more than 5,000 people registered to use the bikes and many have called for the scheme to expand outside the city centre. In a response to a parliamentary question from Fine Gael TD Jerry Buttimer, the NTA confirmed it will carry out a review this year. ■ See Pages 10 & 11.

Chief Executive of the Cork Business Association Lawrence Owens told the Evening Echo that he has discussed the increase in rush hour delays with the Gardaí, since the temporary closure of Clontarf Bridge. Mr Owens said that the works are necessary , but the delays are causing frustrations for traders. “We are all concerned about Cork City. Our main concern is that these delays do not prevent people from coming into the city or force them further out for shopping purposes. “I spoke to Gardaí about placing additional staff at points such as MacCurtain Street and Albert Quay at mornings and evenings.” However, Garda Inspector Finbarr O’Sullivan of Anglesea Street Traffic Corps said that there isn’t currently a plan to put out more staff onto the street. ■ Turn to Page 2.
