■ Alan Healy STARBUCKS is set to open another city centre premises in Cork over the coming weeks. It is understood the former O2 store on Patrick Street, located next to Debenhams, is currently being fitted out for another coffee shop premises by the chain. It will be the third Starbucks premises to open in the city centre in recent months. In March the international chain opened a store on Princes Street and in June Starbucks opened a premises in the historic Queen Anne’s House on the corner of Opera Lane and Emmet Place.

‘A terrible tragedy unfolded before us’ ■ Audrey Ellard Walsh
THE HEROIC efforts of the Irish Navy on board the LÉ Niamh - most of whom are Cork based - prevented a tragedy on an even greater scale when they saved 400 migrants from drowning yesterday.

The ship, which departed Haulbowline last month, responded to a distress call from an overcrowded fishing boat about 100km north of Tripoli just before noon. As they started the rescue, the boat - designed to carry 50 but with 700 on board -capsized and sank with minutes, leaving hundreds trapped below deck. Haulbowline-based Lieutenant Commander Brian FitzGerald described the event as “a terrible tragedy unfolding right before our eyes.” ■ Continued on Page 2.
