Catherine’s €170k gift to Marymount ONE Cork woman’s generosity will help support countless others at Marymount University Hospital and Hospice. Catherine Courtney of Horgan’s Building’s left a bequest of €170,668 to the hospice in her will, which is being described as a valuable addition to the organi-
84-year-old leaves donation in will ■ Audrey Ellard Walsh sation’s annual fund-raising goals. Mrs Courtney, aged 84, who passed away in July 2014, did not have any children and according to solicitor and senator Colm Burke it was always her wish that Marymount be a beneficiary of
her will. “This was a very generous gesture and it was important to her to do it. Even though Catherine never used the facility she was sure that this is what she wanted to do with the money.” The charitable donation will assist the hospice’s many community services ■ Continued on Page 2.

THE killer of Karen Buckley is “beyond evil” and the fact he will receive a lesser sentence for pleading guilty is a denial of justice. That is the opinion of former Cork District Court judge Michael Pattwell in his Even-
ing Echo column today. Alexander Pacteau will be jailed for life next month for the murder of Bandon student Karen in Glasgow. However, the fact he has pleaded guilty and avoided a trial means he is likely to face a recommended
minimum term of 20 years instead of 30. Mr Pattwell writes: “There is something wrong when justice is influenced by expediency. If he did the crime then he should have to face the consequences, even if it costs money. It is a sad day when
true justice is denied just to save money.” Meanwhile, Pacteau’s mother said an apology to the mother of Karen Buckley for h e r s o n ’ s a c t i o n s wo u l d “simply not be enough”. ■ See Pages 2 and 21.
