Unsafe wards at CUH Anti-water charge protesters demonstrate on city’s bridges ■ Audrey Ellard Walsh
■ David Linnane
ANTI-WATER charge protesters assembled on bridges around the city this morning as part of a number of co-ordinated regional demonstrations organised by campaign group Right2Water. The surprise action took place following a week of escalated protests at housing estates around the city and county. Representatives from community groups in Mayfield, Mahon, Blackpool, St Luke’s, Ballyphehane/South Parish, Ballyvolane/Dublin Hill, Cobh, Carrigaline, Midleton and Togher participated in what was deemed to be not a demonstration “against” but rather “a celebration of community in unity” in the anti-metering campaign to date. Participants hung banners from seven bridges in the city, including Patrick’s Bridge, and distributed leaflets promoting a national demonstration planned for Dublin on August 29. ■ Continued on page 2.

‘Patient care danger due to lack of nurses’ NURSING staff levels in Cork University Hospital (CUH) have created an “unsafe care environment”, according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO).

There are currently 78 nursing places unfilled in the hospital, out of a total of approximately 950. In three “acute medical and surgical wards” with high dependency patients there is a nursing shortfall of 30%. Mary Rose Carroll, INMO Industrial Relations Officer, in a statement this morning, said that “patient care is being compromised” as nurses are unable to cope. “In the interests of patient safety and to minimise risk, the INMO believes services should be curtailed and beds closed until adequate staff are available to provide safe effective care.” She said that the shortfall was also impacting nurses who were at “their wits end.”
