■ Audrey Ellard Walsh from the International Federation for Surgical Obesity (IFSO). The hospital’s Bariatric Unit has been active since 2008 and is led by Dr Colm O’Boyle who has performed over 700 procedures on morbidly obese patients. Up to two per cent of the population are considered to be morbidly obese — with a Body
Mass Index (BMI) over 40, which is at least 20 stone for a 5’ 10 person. Dr O’Boyle said that the majority of his patients are women, with an average age of 46 though he has treated patients as young as 17 and as old as 75. “I see about 100 patients a year and it’s only the tip of the iceberg.” said Dr O’Boyle.
