The results of the Evening Echo online poll, as of 7.30am this morning.

Fianna Fáil leader, Micheál Martin, and Sinn Féin TD, Jonathan O’Brien, both expressed their opposition to the controversial merger during the debate. Their comments come as 57% (576) of 1,004 Evening Echo readers who participated in an on-line survey on the issue voted in favour of an expansion of the city council. 19% (195) voted in favour of a complete merger of the city and county councils, which is what the Cork Local Government Review (CLGR), chaired by Alf Smiddy, recommended. 23% (233) of voters, opted for things to remain as they are. In the Dáil last night Mr Martin described the merger proposal as ‘anti-politician’ and said that the idea that the proposals would function better than the existing set up were ‘mythology’. Speaking from Leinster House, Deputy O’Brien described the merger as ‘fundamentally wrong’ for the people of Cork during the debate adding that Minister Kelly has shown no appetite for compromise. ■ Continued on P2.
