RAG Week raises fear
Locals worry about behaviour
RESIDENTS living near UCC say they are fearful of yet another out-of-control RAG week which last year saw drunken revellers jumping on cars, setting bonfires, urinating on the front doors of houses and smashing bottles on the streets.

chart-topping album at every show. The 24-show tour marks the 30th anniversary of the release of the critically acclaimed The Joshua Tree, taking in North America before crossing the Atlantic to play London and various major European cities.
The annual Raising and Giving Week, organised by UCC Students’ Union, takes place in just four weeks time, running from February 13 to 17. A number of people living in areas adjoining the UCC campus voiced their “serious concerns” about the event at the most recent meeting of the South Central Community Safety forum. They called for the on-campus bars to limit their opening hours, for CCTV to be installed on Gilabbey Street, and for increased patrols by An Garda Síochána. Chair of the group, John O’Rourke, said he raised the matter of bar opening hours with UCC President Michael Murphy and received an extremely positive reply. “I received a letter dated June 2, 2016, signed by the president, which said the University Management Team has recommended the hours of the two on-campus bars would be restricted during the
■ Kelly O’Brien upcoming Raising and Giving Week,” said Mr O’Rourke. “However, despite numerous follow-up phone calls and letters, nobody has been able to give me details of these restrictions, or a commitment that they will be enforced.” A spokesperson from An Garda Síochána said they will work with UCC Students’ Union and with local publicans and businesses to ensure this year’s RAG week runs as smoothly as possible. They said a heavy police presence works very well as a deterrent during RAG week, but said the suggestion of the council installing CCTV on Gilabbey Street was very welcome and that it would be of huge benefit to the gardaí. Local residents commended the gardaí for their efforts during UCC Freshers Week in September and during the recent UCC Christmas Day celebration.
