Picture: David Keane ■ Audrey Ellard Walsh said. “The red and white bunting is flying and people are stopping on the street to talk about the match. “It has provided a great lift for the area, which is marvellous to see, and the whole community is looking forward to cheering the lads on.” Mr Carey paid particular tribute to the hard work put in by the club management.
“This is a great achievement for the club and chairman after all the work that they have put in to developing the game locally in recent years. “They have put a great foundation in place and it is clear to see that the future is bright for the club.” Throw in is 3pm, with the match set to be streamed online at aib.ie/gaa. ■ Cheering on Mayfield: See pages 2, 3 and Cork Sports World inside.

Gunman in secure jail unit ■ Sheehan in protection for his own safety
THE man sentenced to eleven years for shooting a Cork woman in her boyfriend’s home is under protection in Cork prison. Gavin Sheehan, of 7 Laurel Ridge, Shanakiel, is currently in the challenging behaviour unit. While the unit is usually reserved for inmates who have been involved in an incident in the prison, Sheehan has been placed there for his own protection. He has been isolated from the rest of the prison population in Cork because of concerns about his safety. It follows the revelation in court on Tuesday at his sentencing hearing that he was a garda informer for two years. He was sentenced in relation to the shooting

of Ciara Sheehan, who is no relation, at her boyfriend’s home in Hollywood Estate, in May last year. During the hearing, defending SC Vincent Heneghan told the court that his client was acting as an informer to An Garda Síochána for two years, up to Christmas 2015. He said his client supplied names of people involved in the drugs trade, gun trade and “criminality in general”. Mr Heneghan also told the court at Tuesday’s hearing that Sheehan had been moved between three prisons, while he was held in custody since being convicted last November in connection with the shooting, for his own safety. ■ See more on Page 2.
