■ Fewer Catholics in our multicultural city CORK has seen a major shift away from religion since 2011, according to the latest census results.
Dara Murphy TD with the overall winners, from left, Susan Teegan, Ray Walsh, Brenda Corcoran,Tony Cooney, Brian Cronin and Stephan O’Reilly, at the Mayfield Community Volunteer awards at the Clayton Hotel Silver Springs. Picture: Eddie O’Hare THE everyday heroes who keep Mayfield’s many vital community services ticking were honoured at the biennial M a y fi e l d C o m m u n i t y Vo l u n t e e r Awards last night. The glittering gala evening, which took place at the Clayton Hotel Silver Springs, paid tribute to the hard work of tireless volunteers, many of whom have dedicated decades of their lives to the betterment of their local area.
■ Audrey Ellard Walsh “Cork wouldn’t thrive without volunteerism and it is important to recognise that,” said Lord Mayor, Councillor Des Cahill, who spoke at the event. “I have been in Mayfield a lot over the year and it is a fantastic community and that’s down to the people here, the volunteers, and you should

be very proud of where you are from.” Brenda Corcoran, who boasts 36 years of voluntary work, was one of six nominees to receive overall awards. Two special achievement awards were presented to Ann Dowley Spillane of cancer support group, the Girls Club Cork, and dancer Alan Kenefick of Prodijig fame. ■ See Pages 2 and 3.
The summary figures for Census 2016 were released yesterday and showed that there were more than 10,000 fewer people in Cork who identified as Catholic, and almost 25,000 more people who said they had no religion. Catholicism is by far the biggest religion with 434,722, but that is still a drop of 10,135 people or 2.3%. The number of people who said they had no religion rose from 31,693 to 56,444, an increase of 24,751 from 2011. That was a 78.1% increase, higher than the rest of the state. The Church of Ireland had a bigger drop in percentage terms — 3.2% — bringing the number of adherents down 465 to a total of 15,060. While there was no breakdown of the number of Muslims in Cork, there was an increase in that population at a national level, and an increase of 5,415 in Cork who identified with other, stated religions, many of whom are likely to be Muslim. Cork also became more multicultural since 2011, with 15.5% of people being born outside the state, up from 13.3%. Apart from people born in Ireland, the most common birthplace for people in Cork was England and Wales, with 23,869 people. ■ See Page 4 for more.
