Robert Hilliard (below), who has been living in Sweden for four and a half years, was close to the scene as four people were killed when a beer lorry mowed down pedestrians in the heart of the city’s shopping district. “I was quite close, one subway stop away,” he said. “They [authorities] blocked off our street and stopped us from leaving the building.” He said people were initially panicked by the uncertainty. “There were reports of multiple attacks and shootings, people were scared and there wasn’t much information around, but a lot of comradery too. People minded each other.” Mr Hilliard said he hopes attitudes towards immigrants won’t change in the aftermath. “We can’t let horrific acts like these change us into something we’re not,” he said. ■ See latest on Page 16.
