New heights: Tower to dwarf Elysian! ■ Audrey Ellard Walsh
Peter O’Mahony.
Peter the Lion heart! PETER O’MAHONY will fly the flag for Cork on the British and Irish Lions tour in New Zealand this summer. The 27year-old former PBC student has been back to his best form recently, with a Champions Cup semi-final next up this Saturday as Munster face Saracens at the Aviva. He’s one of three Munster players selected for the Lions, though there is a Cork connection to Leinster’s Tadhg Furlong too. The Wexford native has roots in Whiddy Island, near Bantry. ■ See Sport for more.
THE Cork city skyline could change dramatically with a 40storey skyscraper is on the cards for the docklands. The towering build, which will be twice the size of the Elysian Tower, will make up part of a transformative new development of the historic Port of Cork site, which has been purchased by US-based Irish developers Kevin and Donal O’Sullivan. The Kerry men, who have 30 years experience developing skyscrapers in New York and have notably worked on the ‘Ground Zero’ rebuild in Manhattan, were yesterday confirmed as buyers of the threeacre site on Custom House Quay. Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr Des Cahill this morning dubbed the project “a game changer for the city”. “I have met with the developers several times over the past six months, in Cork and New York, so I am familiar with the plans,” he confirmed. “I can say that it is very exciting news for the city.” ■ Continued on Page 2.

■ Tony gets FF nomination
KNOCKNAHEENY councillor Tony Fitzgerald is set to become the next Lord Mayor of Cork after he was confirmed as Fianna Fáil’s nominee for the role. Mr Fitzgerald, a HSE community worker, will succeed the cur rent Lord Mayor, Fine Gael’s Des Cahill, on June 16, under an agreed system of voting between the parties on the council. Bar ring any unexpected breakdown in the voting system, he will be the first Fianna Fáil councillor to hold the role since Cllr Mary Shields in 2014. At the start of this council term, elected members voted to abandon the traditional pact system that had operated in the city for decades. Instead, they favoured the d’Hondt system, which would see the role of Lord Mayor shared between the parties more evenly based on the n u m b e r o f s e at s h e l d p e r party. It resulted in Fianna Fáil securing two of the five terms, with Sinn Féin, Fine Gael and Independents all getting one. It is expected that the majority of councillors will, therefore, back Mr Fitzgerald’s nomination.
Cllr Tony Fitzgerald. ■ Kevin O’Neill First elected to Cork City Council in 2004, Mr Fitzgerald has established a stronghold in the north-west ward. He has increased his vote each time around, including a 7% jump in the 2014 local elections. “I am delighted to have the ongoing support in the ward,” he said. Since being elected to council 13 years ago, Mr Fitzgerald has chaired the city’s Joint Policing Committee and served on a number of committees and working groups. ■ Continued on Page 2.
