Fresh Tank Field anger Bishopstown school for Mayfield, where does Gaelscoil go now?

Teen player lost case but ‘got justice’

MAYFIELD residents have expressed anger at the revelation that a local school building is to be occupied by a southside primary school while nearby Gaelscoil an Ghoirt Álainn pursues plans to build a new €5m development on a nearby green area.

■ Liam Heylin A TEENAGE soccer player has defended his parents’ decision to sue his former club, claiming justice was served even though he lost his case. Seán Cooke brought the case against Car rigaline United as a result of how he was allegedly treated when he was 13 and 14. He lost the case against his former club for psychological injury after the judge found the boy’s coach to be conscientious. The judge said Seán’s father was “a caring parent not blessed with insight”. Reacting on social media, Seán said: “I’m very proud of my parents for taking the stand for me and sticking up for what was the right thing to do. We feel justice has been served... we can now move on.” ■ See Page 6.

The Scoil Naomh Eoin Aspal building, located on the Old Youghal Road, is soon to be vacated as it amalgamates with nearby Scoil Mhuire Banríon next September. Residents who have been campaigning for decades to preserve an area of green space, known locally as the Tank Field, had hoped that the empty building would provide an ideal alternative home for the local gaelscoil and thereby save the green as a local amenity. However, it has now emerged that Bishopstown-based school, St Killian’s, which specialises in providing programmes for pupils with a range of educational difficulties, will move to Mayfield in the new school year. The Diocese of Cork and Ross, which has responsibility fo r t h e s o o n - t o - b e va c a n t building, said the current enro l m e n t at S t K i l l i a n ’ s i s
