MARKET OASIS is a dynamic complex featuring a street food market, bookshop, co-working space, event venue, residential housing, and rooftop park. Born from the adaptive reuse of an existing parking garage predating the fall of the Berlin Wall, its core mission is to rejuvenate an underdeveloped neighborhood while minimizing demolition, fostering a tranquil and engaging environment for all.
As Danish urban design consultant Jan Gehl aptly said,
“ If you invite more cars, you get more cars. If you make more streets better for cars you get more traffic. If you make more bicycle infrastructure you get more bicycles. If you invite people to walk more and use public spaces more, you get more life in the city. You get what you invite. ”
By cultivating a vibrant destination for residents and visitors alike, these revitalization efforts champion community engagement and sustainable progress.

The core of the transformation strategy lies in sustainability and the reduction of CO2 emissions. Rather than extensive demolition, the strategy prioritizes adapting existing conditions, integrating three additional ramps, stairs, and lifts to improve accessibility while minimizing disruption.
By leveraging the existing infrastructure, the project embodies a sustainable and environmentally-friendly approach.
In the words of the French architects Lacaton & Vassal, “ Never demolish. Never subtract, remove, or replace. Always add, transform, and utilize, with and for the inhabitants. ”

PETITE ISLAND emerges as a theater complex inspired by the dynamic stage of German choreographer Sasha Waltz’s production “INSIDEOUT.” This visionary performance depicted an urban cityscape crafted from interconnected boxes with varying openings, fostering an interactive experience where individuals could freely navigate without prescribed paths.
Drawing inspiration from this fluidity between indoor and outdoor spaces, PETITE ISLAND’s distinctive tripartite structure was meticulously crafted from reconfigured existing spatial elements on-site, forging a unified architectural ensemble
that blurs the boundary of interior and exterior realms.
In homage to the essence of “INSIDEOUT,” the concept extends to the rooftop, where a park serves as both an alfresco stage and a cultural oasis. Here, audiences can not only immerse themselves in performances within the theater’s confines but also savor cultural displays amidst the backdrop of surrounding edifices.
Nestled as a petite island amidst Berlin’s bustling urban landscape, PETITE ISLAND offers a serene sanctuary, inviting visitors to escape the frenetic pace of city life and indulge in diverse perspectives.

Drawing from a participatory design approach, insights from site surveys revealed a community longing for a shared space that caters to both children’s amusement and parental respite. Consequently, amidst existing amenities like the second-hand furniture shop and pizzeria, a theater area intertwined with a children’s library was integrated.

Dandelion House, situated at Brunnenstrasse 32, stands as a unique housing project in Berlin. Positioned on a corner, it embodies the architectural concept of an “Eckehaus” in German. Historically, this locale was a gathering point around the water pump on Brunnen Strasse, reflecting the community-centric nature of the area.
In the diverse landscape of Berlin, with nearly 790,000 foreign residents hailing from over 190 countries, our site analysis reveals that district 10115 boasts a rich multicultural environment, coupled with a youthful demographic compared to other districts.
The deliberate L-shaped design of Dandelion House serves a dual purpose: to create a central courtyard shared with neighboring buildings while maximizing ground space. Externally, the polycarbonate facade visually represents the dispersion of dandelion seeds(Cypselae) by the wind, serving as a metaphor for migration and the varied cultural influences shaping Berlin.
Dandelion House promotes communal living, inviting residents from diverse backgrounds to unite and embrace the city’s cultural richness.

The courtyard park provides a peaceful setting for neighbors to gather over coffee, reflecting Berlin’s diverse and harmonious atmosphere. The stair seating follows the natural contours of the landscape.
To foster community and privacy, the 1st floor serves as a private hub where residents can work remotely or enjoy table tennis, a popular local activity.
Spanning the 2nd to 4th floors, the shared corner kitchen also acts as a laundry room, encouraging socializing and relaxation. Thoughtfully integrated French balconies enhance residents’ quality of life within the limited housing area, offering delightful outdoor retreats.
