T

his project starts from a series of research of daily spaces in Nanjing. The research is about some interesting interactions among walls and opennings in different spaces. Thus, I selected a space which moved me the most, transforming it into the design of Mr.Gao's house.

This project is launched in an old community in downtown Nanjing. The original building of this site was taken up by a small bunglaw. The site is so narrow that three sides of it are extremely close to the apartments around it and there is only a small lane about 4 metres wide located at south side of this site.

inally, I chose a space which I discovered in Nanjing Presidential Palace as the model and transformed it into a large paint painting on a wooden plank. The space is a long and narraw space with a potential to become a interesting residential space.

hrough a city walk in Nanjing, I discovered 12 interesting spaces and transformed them into 12 Acrylic painting respectively, using the orignal color in the city.

2

1. The site is about 21.85 metres long and 5.30 metres wide. I initially erect a volume as the base of this design.

2. Then remove three cubes from the volume so that yards and entrance will be formed. And also, wind and light will be able to enter the house.

3. Afterwards, I divide the interior space into 6 sections in sequence according to extent of publicness and privateness.

3

4. In the end, I ascend Atelier, making them become a spatial sequence and creating unique space feeling.

his image shows the state of space at the entrance. The whole space is divided into two spaces with different properties by changing the ground material, lowering the ceiling and sinking the ground. The left part is the more private dining room and kitchen, and the right part is the more public entrance hall and courtyard.

ommemorative spaces and daily spaces are two important components of human social places, which respectively carry the past and present of human beings. They have two distinct spatial states, seemingly unrelated, but often inadvertently intertwined. From the old houses in the fields and the tombstones of the ancestors besides, to the towering bell towers of the church and the cozy little cafes besides, to the noisy city center and the large cemetery that suddenly appeared in it, the dialogue between daily life and commemoration pervades Nanjing.

n Nanjing, this dialogue between commemoration and everyday life has become very frequent. The bustling commercial center is slowly unfolding around the solemn Zhongshan Scenic Area, forming a huge contrast and thus creating a wonderful interaction between these two kinds of spaces. The site of the project is right at the edge of Zhongshan Scenic Area, connected with the surrounding downtown area by a highway. The owner is an art collector, and he hopes it will be built as his private art gallery.

n this site, I hope this art gallery can fully illustrate the interaction between daily life and past in Nanjing urban space, creating a richer space experience. Therefore, I design the monumental space as a tower, and the daily space as the gallery, integrating the two into the design of the art museum. People wandering in the constantly changing tower and corridor space, a sense of history, nature, and life is evoked in their mind. 9

hen you step into the museum, a huge, strange black cylinder will come into your sight. Although some parts of it are invisible because of the roof and ground, all the elements of the site point to this cylinder so that it still create a strong sense of monumentality. Thus, curiosity will be aroused, so that it will motivate you to explore the architecture.

03 The Great Wall Collective house in Gothenburg

T

his Collective house is located on the Gota River in Gothenburg. Next to our design is Gothenburg's first reinforced concrete building, and Sweden's first Chinese restaurant is also located on the ground floor of this building. Therefore, in this design, in addition to solving the basic functional issues of the site, we also aim to explore how to embed our understanding of the Chinese context into the site, creating a dialogue with the old restaurant while creating a new and interesting place.

Skeppsbron 4

N

ext to our site, Skeppsbron 4 stands proudly along the river Gota Alv, a historic landmark with a robust presence. Constructed in 1914 with innovative use of concrete, it formerly housed Sweden’s first Chinese restaurant — The Great Wall, symbolizing the city’s memory and heritage in steadfast cement gray. Although the interior space has a lot of Chinese elements but they are only decorative and superfacial, and has a certain degree of misinterpretation. So that, we hope to integrate not only just superfacial decorations but also Chinese system into the design of the new Collective house, and combine it with the Context in a natural and reasonable way.

e hope that the new Collective house should not be conceptual first, but that the actual function and concept should have the same important status. Architecture should not be just an aesthetic game for architects, but more complexity and diversity that reflect daily use should be taken into consideration. Xishan Courtyard, Xuzhou

The materials used in different objects are clearly visible, and traces of construction can be seen in them. The picture on the right is the Xishan courtyard located in Xuzhou, China. Different spaces are superimposed to create a rich spatial perception and the feeling of movement. Therefore, such a characteristic will be a very important point in our design.

1.

1. The site is a rectangular area 11.5m wide and 22.5m long, adjacent to Skeppsbron 4. We plan to design a Collective house in this area.

3.

3. We open the corner where the building connects to the two streets, so that people can enter the courtyard more easily. The red part is the volume that will be demolished in Skeppsbron 4 in the future. We imagine that a part of the wall will be retained after the demolition of the volume, which will define the exterior of the reopened Great Wall Restaurant.

5.

5. Then we built another vertical walkway system based on this flat walkway system. This system connects the second and third floors of Skeppsbron 4, the courtyard and the five-story multifunctional open space of our in-filled building. Through this series of spatial operations, the public attributes of the courtyard have been greatly enhanced, and the connection with the surrounding buildings has become closer.

2.

2. First we inserted two volumes into the site, the lower volume and the connected Skeppsbron 4 is of the same height as Merkurhuset across the street. Then we divided the two volumes into approximate functional intervals.

4.

4. We will place a walkway system in the middle of the courtyard to respond to the concept of a Chinese courtyard. Not only that, this semi-outdoor space will provide more possibilities for people to stay.

his picture is the perspective of the entrance from the multi -function workshop. The column elevator, cylinder and the stairs are brushed into different colors to emphasize the sense of object. They are like sculptures to guide people from the entrance to the courtyard.

his picture is a perspective view of the courtyard. Walls, pathways, stairs and other objects divide the courtyard into several small spaces, and these small spaces are connected together through certain openings to create a rich spatial experience.

T

his picture is a perspective view of a multi-functional space. We use a staggered structure close to the traditional Oriental to handle the roof to enhance the Chinese feel. The structure here is no longer just a structure, it is also a landscape. 23

04 Floating Courtyards Transformation of Nanshi Apartment

N

anshi apartment is an old apartment built in 1980s. The whole block where Nanshi apartment is located used to be an inhabitant district. However, according to the planning of Nanjing city, it will be planned to be a commercial area. Therefore, Nanshi apartment also needs to be transformed to integrate with surrounding. My strategy is to reshape it into a building, fulfilling functions as shopping, accomodation and catering sercices etc, so that I propose the concept Floating Courtyard.

24

3. And then a volume will be attached to this building in order to expand the usage of commercial space and to form a courtyard of the building.

4. Deconstruct the volume into several cubes so that it will be floating. Then, put a platform upon the volume and use several stairways to connect the ground floor and the first floor, so that the whole commercial space will be integrated into one single system and also create outdoor space with suitable scale for adapting to surrounding .

2. I divide this 5-storey building into two parts, in which the ground floor and the first floor will be transformed into commercial space and the other three floors will be transforemd into hotels.

1. The original building is an old apartment located in the Pingshi community which will be transformed into commercial complex.

25

5. As for the hotel, it is relatively closed and be lack of public space so I insert a irregular volume into this building as each floor's public space. Moreovelr, this volume can also be considered as a landmark which could be seen immediately when people step into the public square.

05 Resonate with Holiness Public Bath in Jiulong village

T

his architecture is located in jiulong village, Sichuan province. According to the plan, this village will be a resort for promoting the development of local tourism. Therefore, the village needs a large public space at the end of the village as a major part of it. I choose to design a public bath for this village.

2. For integrating with the surrounding of the village, a huge volume of Bathhouse is put underground .

3. Put Auxilliary spaces around the bathhouse. Therefore, the context of the village will be extended and also a huge square will be formed by these volumes.

1. The site is at the end of this village and will become the major public space of it.

32

4. Insert concrete light tubes into these houses, so that light can illuminate inner spaces and a sense of holliness will be produced.
