ebruary is the month of love. It’s a time to celebrate and honor all the loving relationships we have in our lives. That is why it’s the perfect time to celebrate and honor the most important relationship you have in life the one you have with yourself? As parents it is often difficult to set aside personal time, but this month take the opportunity to challenge yourself to practice self care and self love. Self-care and self-love is about loving who you are and seeing in yourself what those who care about you see and love in you. It’s about living as your best self no matter what. One way to get started is with positive self talk or affirmations. Pick your favorite affirmations and write them on sticky notes. Put those sticky notes where you’ll see them every day — on your bathroom mirror or the cabinet above your coffee maker. Whatever works for you! Here are some ideas to get you started. 1. Write down five things that you love about yourself. 2. Write ten things that you are proud you have accomplished. 3. Look in the mirror and tell yourself three things you have accomplished that was difficult. 4. Reflect on how far you’ve come and what you’re capable of. 5. Challenge yourself to try new things. Write them down and add at least three of them to your schedule. 6. Do one thing completely and utterly for yourself. This is anything that brings you joy. No matter how big or small, when you do it tell yourself “this is for me.” Happy Valentine’s Day!

We look forward to hearing from you; visit our website www.augustafamily.com and on facebook and twitter. Facebook.com/ augustafamilymagazine @AUGFamilyMag

Cousins Book Club

VERY TIME @SayWhatScooter spends time with his cousin Jamil, they come up with a new “thing.” First, there was the boiled peanuts which they sold for a spell at the Saturday Market. Next, was a brief stint with slime. #CousinsPeanutsAndSlime has an interesting ring to it (not to be confused with Jones BBQ and Foot Massage). Another idea was their customized spa experience, complete with soothing music and lighting, courtesy of Alexa. Most recently, they’ve talked about starting their own book club so I’m putting together a starter kit, of sorts. I’ve been looking for books they would enjoy reading AND enjoy discussing with friends - kinda like they discuss Fortnite and NBA 2K19 right now. I started with the mountain of books that we already have here at home. No such luck finding anything that’s compelling to 10-year olds. But luckily, I had a recent case of “PRIMENESIA” just in time for the holidays and found several authors whose work we’ll be checking out in the near future. Inspired by Marley Dias, 13-year old author of Marley Dias Gets It Done: And So Can You!, and brains behind the #1000blackgirlbooks, we sought books written by African-American authors. We sought books about young people with whom Scoot can identify. As he fancies himself an athlete, Scoot started with Jason Reynolds Track Series. But this is just the beginning . We are well on our way to implementing the CousinsBookClub – replete with books to inspire young and young at heart, written by and about people who share our cultural experience. Scoot, Jamil and I (ok, confession, it’s just me at this point) aspire to share these books at places where young boys and girls of color can go to be uplifted, encouraged and connected. Barber shops, beauty salons and after-school programs. The Scoot and I literally started today, after I cajoled him into putting down the video game for a sec, and then again after I took away his device privileges indefinitely, because he was trying to be slick.. and THEN AGAIN, after I threatened his life.. and Daddy’s... and both of the dogs. Once we got past the initial misunderstanding, The Scoot continued reading with no intervention needed. He even told me that he wanted to read to the puppy – the cute, precocious, toothy Sister Rosa T Beard Gordon Parks Thomas. Sure, why not?! Instead, I find them (15 minutes later) on the sofa... wrestling. Mommy: Hey, I thought I told you to do something constructive. @SayWhatScooter: I’m reading to RosaT. Mommy: But I don’t hear you saying anything. Dogs can’t read your mind. @SayWhatScooter: It was high frequency.. that’s how you read in dog language. And so it goes. (Note: This article is dedicated to the immediate and extended family of Camron Robinson, the 14-year old Hornsby Middle School student who was shot and killed. May we all seek and find true peace and understanding).

THE HATE U GIVE By Renee Williams

T

he Hate U Give by Angie Thomas follows events in the life of Starr Carter, a 16-year-old African American girl who lives in the fictional, mostly poor black neighborhood of Garden Heights but attends an affluent, predominantly white private school, Williamson Prep.

After the police break up a party Starr is attending one weekend, Starr is driven home by her childhood best friend, Khalil. On the way home, they are stopped by a white police officer. The officer has Khalil, who is African-American, exit the car and while outside the car, Khalil re-opens the driver-side door to check in on Starr when the officer fires three shots into Khalil, killing him. Constantly switching between two worlds --the neighborhood where she lives and the school that she attends, Starr feels the uneasy balance between the two. Facing pressure from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and decide to stand up for what’s right. The Hate U Give is Thomas debut novel, expanded from a short story she wrote in college following the police shooting of Oscar Grant. The book debuted at number one on The New York Times young adult best-seller list, where it remained for 50 weeks.

Eating well with Kim

Fiber and a Healthy Heart The month of February is American Heart month and the month of Valentine’s Day. Fiber has a long standing relationship with heart health in that it lowers cholesterol, thus a perfect topic for February. In addition to heart health, I’d like to go on record and say, eating a high fiber diet is one of the best things you can do for your overall health. One of my mentors believed that adequate fiber intake (through foods) was the key to health and decreased chronic disease. I believe that concept even more strongly after 20 plus years in the field of nutrition. Want to eat a heart healthy diet? Eat more fiber! Fiber is found in whole plant foods (whole grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and legumes). Benefits of fiber: • Fiber helps to reduce cholesterol • Fiber helps to regulate blood sugar • Fiber helps to prevent constipation and maintains gut health • Fiber helps produce a feeling of fullness (it is satiating) How do you increase the fiber in your diet? One step at a time! Begin by assessing your diet. Then add one fiber rich food to your diet each day. Assess your diet: Do you eat 3 whole grains a day? .................................q Yes q No Do you eat 2 fruits a day (not juice)? ............................q Yes q No Do you eat 3-5 servings of vegetables a day?.....................................................................................q Yes q No Do you “nibble” on nuts for snack? ..............................q Yes q No Do you include beans in your diet 3 times a week? ................................................................................q Yes q No If you checked “no” to any of the above then you have room to improve your fiber intake. Replace one lower fiber food with a higher fiber food each day to begin your journey toward a fiber rich diet.

Cuban Black Beans

Beans are a fabulous economical way to add more fiber to the diet. Use this delicious recipe to meet the goal of 3 servings of beans a week. It is a perfect side dish; topper for a grain bowl or an awesome snack. 1 ½ tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1 small onion, chopped ½ green bell pepper, finely chopped ½ red bell pepper, finely chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced ¼ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon dried oregano ½ teaspoon cumin 2 (14.5-ounce) cans reduced sodium black beans 1 lime (divided use) Cilantro (optional but delicious) Chopped onion (optional but delicious) Place a nonstick skillet over medium heat and add oil. Once hot add the onion and pepper and sauté over medium heat for 5 minutes (stir occasionally). Next add the garlic, salt, oregano, cumin and one can of beans with the bean liquid. Drain the other can of beans and add to the pan. Allow mixture to cook for an additional 5 minutes. Cut the lime in half and squeeze half into the beans just before serving. Serve with remaining lime and optional garnishes if desired. Yield: 8 servings (Serving size: ½ cup) Nutrition Breakdown: Calories 90, Fat 2.5g (0g saturated fat), Cholesterol 0mg, Sodium 280mg, Carbohydrate 17g, Fiber 6g, Protein 5g. Diabetes Exchanges: 1 Starch, ½ Vegetable Kim’s Note: Instead of using canned beans you can make your beans in the slow cooker or Instant Pot. Making your own beans usually saves $2.00 per pound of beans. The Cuban Black Bean recipe uses 3 cups of beans; if you make your own beans you will have 3 cups leftover. Freeze the leftover beans in 1-1/2 cup portions (equivalent to 1 can of beans) in freezer safe containers or zip-top bags. They will keep for 3-4 months. Slow Cooker Black Beans 1 pound beans 2 tablespoons + 1/2 teaspoon sea salt; divided use 8-12 cups water + 8 cups water; divided use In a large pan or the crock of a slow cooker (if large enough) dissolve 2 tablespoons of salt in 8-12 cups of water and add the beans - soak overnight in the refrigerator. After the overnight soak, drain the beans and rinse. Add beans to the crock of a slow cooker, with 8 cups of water (or enough water to cover the beans by about 2-inches). Add 1/2 teaspoon salt to the slow cooker, stir and cook for 8 hours on low. Yield: 6 cups of cooked beans (equivalent to 4 cans). Instant Pot Black Beans 1 pound beans 2 tablespoons + 1/2 teaspoon sea salt; divided use 8-12 cups water + 6 cups water In a large pan dissolve 2 tablespoons of salt in 8-12 cups of water and add the beans - soak overnight in the refrigerator. After the overnight soak, drain the beans and rinse. Add the rinsed and sorted beans to the inner pot of the electric pressure cooker with 6 cups water. Select bean setting and cook for 25 minutes. Once the cooking is done, allow pressure to naturally release for about 10 minutes. Then manually release pressure and carefully remove the lid (always remove the lid facing away from your face). Yield: 6 cups of cooked beans (equivalent to 4 cans).

Ask the Dr. b y J. Ro n E a ke r, M. D.

AGING IS NOT FOR SISSIES I calculate, according to actuarial tables, that I have about 30 good years left on this little ball floating around the sun. I certainly will take more but I absolutely will not tolerate less. One caveat is that I want to be fully engaged with my cognitive facilities and not relegated to spending eight hours a day donating fortunes to the Shopping Network. I can see my wife telling the kids that I blew their inheritance buying 36 commemorative dinner plates of Elvis’ comeback concert. I want to exit while running my 65th marathon, even if it takes me a day and a half. I’m not one to ruminate about age but recently a few things at work have made me reach for the Geritol and walking cane. Not long ago, I delivered the first baby of a young lady at the ripe old age of 24. What caused me to pause was the fact that I had also delivered the young women who had just delivered! It was second generation time and I was ill prepared for how I reacted. I couldn’t be so old as to be a contemporary of the new grandparents. She assured me that I didn’t look as old as her parents. This provided little solace as granddad was on the couch with oxygen and three teeth. But this whole experience made me start to notice subtle hints, previously repressed, of my progressive senescence. My close up eyesight is deteriorating. I discovered this initially while doing a circumcision. I remembered thinking either this little tyke is going to be the butt of many jokes in the locker room, or I am going blind. A nurse lent me her reading glasses and since that seminal moment, I have stashed a pair of magnifiers everywhere I might actually have to see. I have glasses on all the floors at the hospital, in the operating room, in my car, beside my bed and, just in case, in the refrigerator. There is nothing worse than reaching for a soda and nabbing a can of tomato paste. At my last eye appointment, the disgustingly young doctor asked if I wanted progressive lenses for my new glasses. I told him the progressives were fine but only if I got the senior discount. Not long ago, I received my invitation to join AARP. As most of you know AARP (American Association of Ruptured Prostates) is that group that offers you multiple discounts based on age. What

they don’t tell you is in the fine print and none of us can read the fine print. For example, you can get great deals at restaurants as long as you eat before 5 p.m. and can park in the handicap spots. You can get a discount on an oil change if you drive a Buick and can’t see over the steering wheel. There are great discounts to Las Vegas shows, matinees only and you have to promise to play the penny slots for three hours before. AARP also promises discounts on such useful toys as pacemakers and adult diapers. After reviewing the application, I remembered that I was not retired and did not intend to be so for quite a while, and I don’t need 20% off hearing aids so I decided to trash their invitation. My wife and I both have noted that our night life has taken a turn for the ancient. The other evening we were contemplating going to a movie so we checked the times. The first show started at 9 p.m. and we figured that we would both be asleep by intermission so we bagged the idea. My 25 year old daughter was home recently and her night didn’t start until 10:30 p.m. My wife asked if I was going to wait up for her and when I stopped laughing, I commented that I would only stay up if I could arouse her at 5:30 a.m. the next morning when I rose to run. Another sign of impending age is the tendency to obsess about certain things. Certain necessary body habits (and you know what you are) become the source of speculation and consternation if they don’t occur on a schedule that would make European trains jealous. On the opposite extreme, I have become more relaxed about other things like I no longer care if Vanna White stumbles over a proper spelling on Wheel of Fortune. I could care less if the President wears boxers or briefs and I am numb to who wins the Stanley Cup. I am convinced that MTV is a direct extension of Satan and the inventor of the Snuggie deserves the Nobel prize. Yes, I am aging but like a fine wine, I plan to get better with age and hopefully not turn into vinegar. Dr. Eaker is an Augusta Ob/GYN and author. He and his wife, Susan, have two daughters in college. Visit his website at www.roneaker.com.

Smart Mom’s Guide To...

A Special Valentine’s Day The history of Valentine’s Day has varied explanations but all point to a common theme: love. Valentine’s Day began with the Roman festival called Lupercalia, held in the middle of February. The festival celebrated the coming of Spring and included fertility rights and giving women to men in a lottery. It was officially renamed St. Valentine’s Day at the end of the fifth century by Pope Gelasius. There are a couple of accounts of who “Valentine” was in history. One explanation is the name came from a priest who was martyred in 270 CE. He always signed his letter “from your Valentine” to the jailer’s daughter, of whom he befriended. Another account is the day was named after Bishop of Terni St. Valentine but some historians say that these two people could be the same person. Finally, another story says that St. Valentine went against the emperor’s order and secretly married men and women so that the men would not have to go to war. Any of these explanations are plausible, and again, all point to L-O-V-E. So, with all that said, maybe February 14 is a day to celebrate love and what fun to begin that at home with your own family! Here are a few simple ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day:

1. Bake a Sweet together I love piddling in the kitchen making dinner or baking (or trying to bake something) that is “Valentine’s” delicious. Go to the grocery store with your kids and let one or all of them pick out one or two things to bake. It can be those break and bake sugar cookies with the red heart in the middle, cupcakes with pink icing and sprinkles, strawberry bread or whatever your children’s sweet hearts desire. Carve out some time (and maybe a little extra depending on your children’s ages) to cook. It doesn’t have to be on Valentine’s Day if your schedule doesn’t permit. Just find a day near February 14 and enjoy! 2. Make CardS for thoSe who Need Love Because the entire premise of Valentine’s Day is to show love, why not take that day to show your love to others. This can be making handmade gifts for elderly people at an area nursing home or delivering items to the local children’s hospital. What about leaving a treat in the mailbox for your mail carrier that day or the crossing guard at your child’s school? There are many individuals around us who would love to receive a special treat. 3. Be NeighBorLy with a treat Take a little time to put together a small goody bag of treats or deliver some cookies to your neighbors. Homemade items are the best but if you don’t have the time, a store bought cookie or cake would be just as nice. It really is the thought that counts.

4. CatCh a vaLeNtiNe’S day fLiCk Watching a movie with my girls was always one of my favorite things to do, when they were younger and actually wanted to be with me and my husband. I would love to go back and watch more with a bag of popcorn curled up in cozy blankets and pillows. Find a movie at your local Red Box or On Demand that is a fun love story and enjoy some family time in front of the tube or get out and enjoy some time in front of the big screen. 5. Create a CuStoM vaLeNtiNe’S day diNNer Instead of the same old thing you cook on the weekly basis, make this dinner a little more special. Let each child pick out their favorite dish to go with whatever main dish you are cooking. If you are having chicken, let the kids choose the sides — mac and cheese, carrots with ranch, salad or fruit. I know that if my children had the option to choose, we would have steak with WifeSaver macaroni and cheese, hot wings from T-Bonz and fresh fruit salad. It may not be your ideal meal but your children will actually be excited about a dinner custom made to their particular tastes. You can make February 14 a special day for your family without going over the top or spending too much money. This is a day of L-O-V-E so remember to make some memories or traditions that will last long after the day is over. Cammie Jones is an Augusta freelance writer and mother of three.

Party themes for Boys and Girls By Pam molnar

My youngest two children, a girl and a boy, have birthdays that are three weeks apart. For their early years, when parties included primarily neighborhood friends, I combined their parties. I knew I had to come up with a theme that satisfied both genders in a range of ages. Here are a few party themes that work well for boys or girls.

Globes and Maps A strong awareness of geography and quality Social Studies instruction can positively impact today’s students as they grow up with global opportunities for learning, working, and traveling. While unfortunately not always given as much attention, historical, cultural, and geographical awareness can help students make connections in other subject areas. The Georgia Council for the Social Studies, in their position statement available online, shares that the quality social studies instruction they advocate for can help students “develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society, in an interdependent world.” While as parents we can absolutely help advocate for the teaching of social studies in our schools, and assist our children’s educators by encouraging their schoolwork in this area, there are also ways to supplement this learning at home, helping our children with global awareness in ways that will feel fun, and perhaps make good presents for a birthday or Valentine’s surprise.

Raising Readers

Globes and Maps Access to globes or maps can increase interest in learning about the world around us, and can be used a playroom or bedroom decoration in addition to being a good resource to have around for older children doing schoolwork. There are a variety of interactive globes available online that can encourage children through touch pens to learn more about the countries they seek out, or to play games. For families that travel or move a lot, a scratch map that allows the family to mark off places they have been may be a fun way for young children to begin to comprehend travel time and distances, and you can find both USA scratch maps and full Earth ones (which are generally larger and more expensive). For a bright touch in a playroom, consider a stick on wall map. For around $10 on Amazon, the company Home Evolution has a large wall decal with oceans, continents, and animals for each habitat marked - many other decor companies make these as well with different fonts, colors, and focuses. subscription Kits We’ve been supplementing our homeschool curriculum with the Little Passports subscription service since August. Each month we receive a package with information from a different country - usually a small toy or craft, stickers to mark on the passport and luggage that came with the first month, a postcard sized picture, and a booklet with stories and activities, as well as a link online with supplemental features like more printouts, music, and photographs. Recommended for ages 6-10, younger children will need assistance with some of the reading and activities, while older children may be able to do all of the things themselves. Since my daughter is younger, I use the package as a teaching tool, and she enjoys connecting the activities to other stories and things we are doing. Starting at $16.95, with bundle options, possible add-ons, and other kits, such as a Little Passports USA Edition Subscription, (recommended for ages 7-12 and starting at $14.95) for a larger investment these can be a great way to get students excited to receive educational activities through the mail. Little Passports is also not the only option for a subscription geography service. The well rated and popular Kiwi Co also offers the Atlas Crate (ages 6-11 and starting at $19.95 with lower rates for bundles) where children will make their own globe and receive items related to a different country each month for hands on learning and collecting over time. Popular Beloved magazine publisher Highlights offers it’s Highlights Which Way U.S.A. book club where children (recommended for ages 7+ prices on website) can receive a booklet of puzzles, maps, and more teaching geography through the interactive magazine format that Highlights is so well known for. puzzles and toys Several high quality toy brands make geography items perfect for little ones learning about the world around them. Map and globe

puzzles can help children learn names of places, as well as other facts that might be printed on the puzzles, and how states or countries fit together. Melissa and Doug make several map puzzles, ranging from large floor puzzles to smaller wooden puzzles. Learning Resources produces both a puzzle globe, to help children learn continent and ocean names, and a magnetic U.S.A. puzzle, that at under $20 is a great gift when a family is short on space - the puzzle could be completed on a refrigerator or other metal surface and put away. For older children and teens, a lot of board games teach geography related concepts about travel, map reading, and use of resources, and can encourage both family time and learning. Popular games Settlers of Catan and Ticket to Ride both touch on these critical thinking skills and come in junior versions. Trivia Games such as Brain Box and Trivial Pursuit often have geography and culture specific question sets, dependent on the version. booKs and Media National Geographic has amazing resources for kids learning about different cultures, habitats, and other geography related subjects. They produce atlases for children at varying reading levels, and their website, kids.nationalgeographic.com has videos, articles, games and more - we often use their YouTube channel when looking to supplement our learning at home with well-made, trusted videos. They also have available apps, such as GeoBee Challenge (suggested for grades 4-8) and the National Geographic World Atlas app - one app for learning, and one for quizzing your knowledge. While I do not have a copy, on our wishlist is the book Maps by Aleksandra Mizielinska and Daniel Mizielinski, a gorgeously illustrated atlas for children I’ve had suggested and been able to look through at several other military families’ homes that also has an available activity book or poster version. My children enjoy the “Lift-the-Flap” learning books from Usborne, and they have several geography related books in this line and others. My friend, Dr. Morgan Menefee-Crabtree, a teacher and Usborne books consultant shares that some of her favorites to suggest are the Big Picture Atlas for younger children, Maps Activity Pad, where “each map is meant to be torn out of the pad and written on, so you can easily divvy them up to keep the kids busy.” For older children that are branching out beyond maps, she suggests books like A Short History of the World or See Inside World Religions to help them understand the history and cultures of different geographic locations. Previously reviewed for this column, I See Me! Books also has two personalizable books that show a child traveling and introduce concepts like state flags.

Meredith Flory is an Augusta-area freelance writer, military spouse and mother of two. She has a masters degree in children’s literature from Kansas State University and has taught high school and college English.
