Adam Roczek EUSA President Presidente de EUSA ear friends, I am happy to greet you at the 9th European Universities Handball Championship in Antequera, Spain! On behalf of the whole EUSA community, I would like to express my gratitude for inviting European studentathletes here. It’s a wonderful occasion to be together and experience the beauty of sport. I am pleased to see so many sport lovers, who share values of fair play, equal opportunities and education, promoted by EUSA. European Universities Championships 2017 organized in 19 sports make it possible for student-athletes to get to know each other and challenge their skills in a friendly atmosphere. During such events we do more than just sport – we broaden our horizons, get to know other cultures, we promote healthy mind in a healthy body. Being an organizer of such an event is challenging but rewarding. I know it’s a hard task, and I want to express my appreciation to the Organizing Committee and its partners for the great job they have done. And of course, my gratitude to the authorities for their auspices of this event. I believe that this Championship will bring the participants positive experiences and good results. I am sure that the athletes will compete in a fair play manner, respecting the rules and their opponents and please the spectators with their performance.

Me alegra daros la bienvenida al IX Campeonato Europeo Universitario de Balonmano de Antequera, España En nombre de toda la comunidad de EUSA, me gustaría expresar mi gratitud por abrirles las puertas a los deportistas universitarios de Europa. Se trata de una magnífica ocasión para estar juntos y disfrutar de la belleza del deporte, y es sin duda una alegría ver a tantos amantes del deporte que comparten los valores del juego limpio, la igualdad de oportunidades y la educación que promueve EUSA. Gracias a los Campeonatos Europeos Universitarios de 2017, que se dividen en 19 deportes, los deportistas pueden conocerse los unos a los otros y poner a prueba sus habilidades en un ambiente agradable. Durante dichos eventos hacemos más que deporte: ampliamos nuestros horizontes, conocemos otras culturas y promovemos la salud tanto física como mental. Si bien ser los organizadores de un evento de tal envergadura es difícil, también es gratificante. Sé que es una tarea dura, y por ello quiero mostrar mi agradecimiento al Comité Organizador y a sus socios por el gran trabajo que han hecho. Y, por supuesto, quiero dar las gracias a las autoridades por el auspicio de este evento. Considero que este Campeonato aportará experiencias positivas y buenos resultados a los participantes, y estoy seguro de que los deportistas competirán limpiamente, respetando las reglas y a los oponentes, y que agradarán a los espectadores con su actuación. s chancellor of the University of Malaga, it is with great satisfaction that I welcome you to the 9th European Universities Handball Championship. During the session of the EUSA’s Executive Committee that took place on November 28th 2014 in Coimbra, we were awarded the organization of this important sports event. This goes to highlight our experience as hosts after having organized four World Championships, i.e. Futsal in 1992, Judo in 2000, Golf in 2010 and Handball in 2016, as well as the European Beach Volleyball and Futsal Championships in 2011 and 2013, respectively. In all these events we have relied on the highest European university sports institution, which recognizes the excellence of our staff’s work and the ability of the University of Malaga to combine the synergies of different institutions such as the City Council of Antequera, the Andalusian Regional Government and the Malaga Provincial Council, and also of entities and companies that participate actively to make this 9th Championship a great success. We all together make possible that sport, besides the fair competition to achieve the best possible result, keeps being a social phenomenon that contributes to the prosperity and solidarity among people, especially in our university field, since it is an integral part of the education philosophy, helps to educate in values and expands the university culture.

Universidad de Málaga, supone una gran satisfacción daros la bienvenida al IX Campeonato Europeo de Universidades de Balonmano En sesión del Comité Ejecutivo de la Asociación Europea del Deporte Universitario (EUSA) celebrada el 28 de noviembre de 2014 en Coimbra, se nos encargó la organización de este importante evento deportivo. Ello viene a subrayar nuestra experiencia como anfitriones tras haber organizado cuatro Mundiales: Futbol Sala en 1992, Judo en 2000, Golf en 2010 y Balonmano en 2016, a los que hay que sumar los Europeos de Voley Playa en 2011 y Futbol Sala en 2013. En todos los casos hemos contado con la confianza del máximo organismo europeo de deporte universitario, que reconoce así la excelencia del trabajo de nuestro personal y la capacidad de la Universidad de Málaga para sumar sinergias de instituciones como el Ayuntamiento de Antequera, la Junta de Andalucía y la Diputación de Málaga, y también de entidades y empresas que en este caso participan de una manera activa para el buen éxito de los IX Campeonatos. Entre todos hacemos posible que el deporte, más allá de la justa competición por lograr el mejor resultado, siga siendo ese fenómeno social que contribuye a la prosperidad y solidaridad entre personas, especialmente en nuestro ámbito universitario donde forma parte de la filosofía educativa, contribuye a formar en valores y extiende la cultura universitaria. MAYOR of ANTEQUERA Manuel Jesús Barón Ríos Mayor of Antequera Alcalde de Antequera nce again this year, Antequera proves to be a national and international reference in sports due to the organization of top-level competitions. With the European Universities Handball Championship 2017 we have forged even closer links between the university community and Antequera, showing again that our city has all the qualities needed to hold massive events of great interest. This Championship is expected to become a new milestone in the sports events that Antequera has been holding for several years thanks to the marvelous collaboration that it has with the University of Malaga. I would like to thank this great institution the consideration it has for our city and the recognition it has been showing towards Antequera as an ideal location to hold sports competitions due to its excellent geographical location, its varied and fluent means of communications and its openness when it comes to host the hundreds of people who will gather in Antequera in the following days.
In this sense, I would also
like to welcome all the players,
officials and the general public that are about to take part in this Championship.
Our land has been the birthplace of great handball players and coaches, a land where sport is very rooted and has been so for the last mid-century. Now, we wish to reaffirm this feeling for handball, hoping that you have the best stay possible as an athlete, but also as a tourist, since I expect you to have the chance to discover and delve into the significant history and rich culture of a millenary city such as Antequera. Finally, I would like to acknowledge all the people, entities, institutions and companies that support this Championship, which is going to be a great success at every level, both sportwise and organization-wise.

Un año más, Antequera vuelve a convertirse en referente deportivo nacional con la organización de competiciones al máximo nivel. Con el Campeonato de Europa Universitario de Balonmano volvemos a estrechar los vínculos entre la comunidad universitaria y Antequera, demostrando una vez más las cualidades que nuestra ciudad dispone para albergar eventos multitudinarios de gran interés y trascendencia. Este Campeonato está llamado a convertirse en una nueva cima de los eventos deportivos que durante varios años Antequera viene acogiendo gracias a la magnífica colaboración existente con la Universidad de Málaga, institución a la que agradezco la consideración que tiene hacia nuestra ciudad y el reconocimiento que viene demostrando hacia ella como inmejorable sede para albergar competiciones deportivas merced a una excelente situación geográfica, unas variadas y fluidas vías de comunicación y una ciudad abierta para acoger a las cientos de personas que se congregarán en Antequera en los próximos días. En este sentido, también quiero aprovechar para daros la más cordial bienvenida a Antequera a jugadores, técnicos y público en general que se dispone a tomar parte en este Campeonato. Nuestra tierra es cuna deportiva de excepción de grandes jugadores y técnicos de balonmano, un deporte muy arraigado en la ciudad; ahora, nuestro deseo es reafirmar ese sentimiento balonmanístico con la aspiración de que vuestra estancia sea inmejorable tanto en lo que se refiere a lo estrictamente deportivo como en el aspecto turístico y de ocio, pues espero que tengáis oportunidad de conocer y adentraros en la trascendental historia y rica cultura de una ciudad milenaria como es Antequera. Me gustaría, en último lugar, transmitir mi más sincero agradecimiento a todas las personas, entidades, instituciones y empresas que hacen posible con su apoyo el desarrollo de este campeonato que a buen seguro será sinónimo de éxito a todos los niveles, tanto en lo deportivo como en lo organizativo.

he University of Malaga (UMA) was founded in 1972. It is a public institution that, after 40 years of history, has more than 35,000 students registered and around 2,400 professors. It has two campuses, and is also present in the cities of Antequera and Ronda. Nowadays, the UMA keeps betting on scientific development and innovation as a way to provide progress to society, and it has focused its efforts on promoting mobility and drawing international talent, becoming a university able to settle in scientific projects of the highest level. The UMA is also connected to the job market and to the private and public sectors, and is integrated in the European Higher Education and Research Area. The University of Malaga has the privilege to host its 8th international championship. Our institution has already been honored to organize numerous championships, namely: the 3rd World University Futsal Championship in 1992, the 15th World University Judo Championship in 2000, the 13th World University Golf Championship in 2010, the 8th European University BeachVolleyball Championship in 2011, the 9th European University Futsal Championship in 2013, the 14th World University Futsal Championship and the 23rd World University Handball Championship in
2016. All of these championships were carried out with the highest level of professionalism and turned out to be a great success. Our University relies on a great number of alliances and is supported by different institutions and organizations in order to hold this European Universities
Championship—the Spanish High Sports Council, the Antequera Town Hall, the Malaga Provincial Council and the ASOBAL Handball League, just to name a few. Furthermore, the University of Malaga is experienced in this sport, since its university team competes in Silver Division (the 2nd most important division in Spain), and was the winner of the 2008 and 2009 European Universities Championships.
For all these reasons, the
University of Malaga is thrilled to organize the 9th European Universities Handball Championship and welcome athletes from all Europe to this great event.

Información ÚTIL SPAIN Spain is located in the Iberian Peninsula, bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, Portugal and France. Its capital, in the center of the country, is Madrid. Spain is one of the most important cultural centers of Europe, with cities that MALAGA

The city of Antequera is an exceptional choice for this Championship. Throughout history, the city became an important route for travelers due to its location in the center of the Andalusian Autonomous Community. Commonly known as “the heart of Andalusia”, Antequera allows for an easy access to other important cities, such as Seville, Cordoba or Granada in a little over an hour. Some of the most relevant sightseeing places that can be found in Antequera are “El Torcal”, “The Dolmens” and “El Caminito del Rey”, among others. “El Torcal” of Antequera is a unique natural setting, declared
have a huge historic value and many places which have created a country that is visited by millions of tourists every year. Its cuisine is also worldwide known, with typical dishes such as Spanish omelet, paella, gazpacho, etc.

The fauna has been conditioned in many cases by human intervention, and today we can find many different species of amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Its massif constitutes an area with rich and varied flora, which highly increases the importance of its natural values. In 2016, the archaeological group of dolmens was the only Spanish place of interest declared World Heritage Site by Unesco. It is considered one of the most well-known European megalithic complexes. “El Caminito del Rey” is a footbridge close to Antequera that was originally used for the surveillance of the water canal in the area. In “La Garganta del Chorro”, climbing lovers may find more than 300 equipped routes to practice this type of sport.

Balonmano en EUSA he first European Universities Handball Championship was held in Besançon, France, from June 26 to July 1 2006. The French University Sport Federation welcomed 11 men and 7 women university teams from 11 European countries to participate in the event. In the 2nd European Universities Handball Championship, there were 14 men and 6 women university teams from 13 European countries. The event was held in Lodz, Poland. The third Championship was organized in the city of Niš, Serbia, in July 2008, and 15 men and 6 women teams from 13 European countries participated in the event. From June 15 to 21 2009, the 4th European Universities Handball Championship took place in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and there were 12 men and 7 women university teams from 10 European countries taking part in the event. From June 14 to 20 2010, 271 athletes from 11 countries and 18 universities took part in the Championship, which was organized in Nicosia, Cyprus. The 6th European Universities Handball Championship was held from July 17 to 24 2011 in Rijeka, Croatia, hosting 16 male and 11 female university teams from all over Europe. The 7th European Universities Handball Championship finished on June 30th 2013 with an exciting closing ceremony at the Katowice-Szopienice Sport Venue. Over 300 participants from 20 universities and 10 countries took part in

that year’s edition of the event. The next edition ended on August 9th 2015 with thrilling finals and a closing ceremony at the University of Minho Sports Hall. In this case, more than 450 participants representing 13 universities from 7 countries took part in the event. The University of Malaga, in collaboration with the City Council of Antequera, promotes the project “UMA Handball 2017”, as it has held the Spanish University Handball Championship in 2015 and the World University Handball Championship in 2016, and it’s now ready for this European Championship. The setting for the next championship is already chosen—it will take place in Bydgoszcz, Poland, in the year 2019.
