PROBLEM “You need to recognise and accept the constraints of a project and prioritise them so that you can get to the crux of the matter‌.â€? I. M. Pei
How to treat
existing trees on site?
The ideal outcome would be keeping the existing trees and building on remaining land; underground, on ground or above. Various schemes and proposals have been tested in order to get the best building footprint out of existing site.
How to design
public and private for the art library?
The library is mainly for artists, writers, scholars and local community to utilise the space for their creativity process, research and study. Most of them will be individuals with subjective minds therefore sense of serenity and privacy is a must. Hence entrance of the library is set back away from busy bridge to gain privacy for the users. Zoning of the library is divided vertically by subjects.
How to articulate between
bridge and the art library?
The bridge is connecting from Claremont oval to train station through shopping centre. The proposed art library located at the crosspoint between shopping centre and train station. Elevated platform terrace is introduced to the bridge from library. Terrace leads to the main entrance of the library.
What is
Defamiliarization and how to achieve the concept of Defamiliarization into design? Defamiliarization is radical un-preparedness set to one's mind. It has to appear familiar yet it seem strange.
How to
adopt precedents onto proposed design?
After having studied Dominique Perrault's BnF library building and his concept on that project. I apply his ideas and concept not in literal but in figurative way. One can see fragments of his ideas through this proposed design.

PRECEDENT “Its harder to create a place with a special quality and specificity, than a building. And this specificity is to create a void more or less like a public space, while at the same time working with the building to give a physical presence around the void because a void is not nothing but it is nothing if the building doesnt work and use this void to exist, to get a presence physically.” (Perrault 2011)

The chosen site is located next to Claremont train station. The library can be accessed from bridge level. The Library is located at the crosspoint of train station and shopping centre.
1: 5000 SCALE I have noticed a group of mature trees in the middle of allocated site from my first site visit. Those existing trees are unique and beautiful vibrant colour and it become the graft of this project.

The architecture of the library seeks to impart spatial drama and evolves from a dialogue of opposing forces: a sense of darkness and light, an expression of mass and transparency, and the volumes of the building are clearly articulated on the site. Freeing up space for a large courtyard with existing trees: an urban oasis and outdoor study space.

PRODUCT
From my precedent study of Dominique Perrault's BnF Library, I have learned that he was using flight of steps to cover up trees in the middle of the library.
From bridge level, few steps up will be leading to a square / terrace of the library. The square acts as the threshold between bridge & library, also separated between public and private, and it setback certain distance so that allow people to appreciate overall building.
Light, comfort, serenity, solitude, personal and social space are essentials for the library. Library / study area at ground level have view to existing trees and it isolated from outside world. It would be ideal place for people who want to isolate themselves from outside world and need a place to think or write or read.
“The center of Perrault's library is a sunken garden. The ground is cut out in a rectangle and greenery planted on a artificial topography. Invisible from the street, the verdure seems unreal, a landscape afloat in fragments of memory. (Toyo Ito)

"Night vision: the Bibliotheque nationale de France will be set in a halo of light, emanating from the garden and the service periphery. A diaphanous light will rise up through the interiors of the glass towers... this liquid light will spread over the square." (Perrault 1989)
Custom made steel mesh panels or perforated sunshade screen will be used as cladding for the library. These panels will be appeared as animated display screen/ outdoor theatre at night and it will created vibrant urban night life. Wall can be treated as blank canvas of the building. It can dress up with different art works / posters/ banners/ paintings. By doing so the elevation of the building will be constantly changing over time.

GROUND LEVEL
On the big platform Watching for trains going by Some day so will I.
Watching trains go by from certain perspective could produce romantic/ nostalgic feeling to the viewer, especially for artists and writers. Glimpse of train and sound also can give sense of time to the place.
