Simple Ways to a Shiny White Smile by Dr Mitsy Navales-Antolin
Why do teeth stain? Why do teeth stain? • Your teeth can become stained on the surface, or by the changes in the tooth enamel. • External and unavoidable factors such as food, beverages, and medications may discolour the teeth. • Smoking and neglect of oral hygiene will also lead to staining. •Genetics or certain diseases can directly cause intrinsic staining.. •Teeth that have undergone trauma and root canal treatment are more prone to discolour. • Changes in the teeth, such as microcracks and thinning of the enamel surface throughout age progression , inherently causes the enamel to stain over time.

What treatment options are available? Treatment options vary depending on the cause of the original discolouration. Extrinsic stains caused by food and drink can be removed by professional cleaning and throughout individual maintenance in everyday home care. The Fountain of Youth: Hyaluronic Acid by Olive- i
There is an old anti-ageing ingredient in the beauty industry that has been making big waves recently – Hyaluronic Acid. What is Hyaluronic Acid?
H
yaluronic Acid or Hyaluronan is a substance that is already present in our bodies, mostly found in fluids in our joints, eyes, and in the collagen of our skin. Hyaluronic acid is a gel like fluid that has anti-bacterial properties and functions as an anti oxidant in our bodies. It helps heal wounds, burns and skin ulcers. Hyaluronic Acid is now widely used in the beauty industry as an antia g e i n g remedy. Some are injected, applied topically, or ingested orally. Hyaluronan Injections are sometimes given to patients suffering from osteoarthritis as it helps lubricate the joints. It is also injected in the eyes during eye cataract surgery and in cosmetic surgery; it is injected on the lip as lip filler.
Topically, it is widely available as a skin moisturiser, face scrub and even as a face mask. Hyaluronic Acid, when applied topically, is absorbed by the skin into our system. Massage creams and scrubs evenly help hyaluronic acid penetrate into the skin. Like collagen, hyaluronic acid is less produced by our bodies as we age, so it is important that we try to increase its levels through healthy eating as well as taking supplements. Hyaluronic Acid multiplies in our bodies naturally, especially if we consume a lot of foods that are high in retinol and
Hyaluronic Acid supplements are also available over the counter in different dosages – from 100mg to 1000mg, mostly sold with collagen as well.

Vitamin E. Meats like Veal, lamb, beef, turkey, goose, and duck are all rich sources. Cod liver oil contains a high amount of vitamin A and retinol. Sweet potatoes and bananas are also a good source of hyaluronic acid. Both of these have hyaluronic producing magnesium that synthesizes hyaluronic acid in our bodies Fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C help increase levels of hyaluronic acid in our bodies. Oranges, grapefruits, red and green peppers, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, papaya and strawberries are high in vitamin C. One serving of these vitamin C rich fruits and vegetables is enough to produce or create hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is very important to the skin and hair; it retains a huge amount of water which keeps it hydrated. Maintaining hyaluronic acid in our bodies decreases wrinkles and can keep our skin firm and smooth.

t indeed takes two to tango, as we have seen Nadine Lustre and James Reid dance their way hand in hand into the show business spotlight, being the brightest love team of this generation. The duo’s first step was in the movie adaptation of the local novel Diary ng Panget (April 2014) which became popular from Wattpad to paperback earning a total of P130M and an increasing number of supporters. JaDine continues to rise with their second big screen tandem, Talk back and You’re Dead (August 2014) under the production of the two largest film companies in the Philippines. This became another best-selling novel turned box office smash, generating P30M in ticket sales in its first three days. Filipino-Aussie Robert James Reid was born on May 11, 1993 and moved from Sydney to Philippines when he was sixteen. He was a student of Makati Science High School when he was chosen to be one of the “Teenternational Housemates” of Pinoy Big Brother: Teen Clash 2010, here he was crowned as the Big Winner after receiving roughly 170,000 votes.

He was also teamedup with another housemate, Yen Santos in the show Pintada. A year after his victory, James, together with his co-PBB teen housemate Bret Jackson, also launched a digital album entitled We Are Whatever, followed by his self-titled album in 2013. Being a talented young starlet, she started hosting the children’s show Storyland, when she was only nine years old and became part of a youth-oriented cast in the program, Bagets. After appearing on the GMA Network, Nadz signed a contract with ABS-CBN in early 2014 and was paired up with James Reid. Undaunted by the controversies, team JaDine gracefully continue to work together on their undeniable chemistry, “without forcing themselves to fall in love with each other”. As Nadine stated, “being in a love team is a matter of teamwork where you help one another.” Watch out for these two amazing young stars as they dance together, hand in hand, reaching their way up to the top!

SUNDAY ALL STARS by Richard Sanchez | Photos by Miguel Livelo

e were ushered from the staff green room into the dressing room, where Rachelle Ann Go, Regine Velasquez, Heart Evangelista and Jaya prepare for a star studded Sunday All Stars. Pictures were taken and with the stars show-ready, we were taken to the front row minutes before the start of the show. The crowd was hyped but needed no encouragement as they cheered on their beloved artists. The big screen goes live from the GMA rooftop, decorated as a poolside with a youthful summer party feel lead by Janno Gibbs, Jonalyn and Elmo Magalona (son of 80’s rapper Francis Magalona). They were accompanied by upcoming GMA Stars, with their version of “Cruel Summer”. The lights lift the stage and the ‘Queen of Soul’ Jaya takes to the stage with Asia’s songbird Regine Velasquez Alcacid, singing the monster 70’s hit “Hot stuff ”. As we go to a commercial break, the show only gives you a second to catch your breath, as Mark Bautista sings live on stage and duets the Streisand classic “The Way we Were”, with the world famous darling of the London’s West End Rachelle Ann Go, via an on-screen video feed. A sense of magic fills the studio, when a screen lifts to reveal Rachelle standing on stage in a blue Cinderella dress, electrifying the air with an enchanting rendition of the Disney’s classic, “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes”. GMA switch things up once again with the flawlessly beautiful actress Lovi Poe’s song and dance, followed by the pitch perfect vocals of Asia’s Regine Velasquez, taking the crowd to new heights with a re-arranged version of Sia’s “Chandelier”. With performances and beauty in abundance, I am moved to the edge of my seat asking only one question: Can they make me laugh? The answer is most definitely YES! sing “Let’s get loud”, whilst comic Chippendales grip their towels in a hilarious ‘Musical Towels’ (as opposed to chairs) performance, leaving the five Channing Tatum lookalikes (I jest of course) behind one towel closing this section of the show. The show closes with a mash up of Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk” and Meghan Trainor’s “Your lips are moving”. This is followed by a rooftop summer serenade from love teams of yesteryears - Janno Gibbs and Manilyn Reynes, alongside the current sensational couple Elmo Magalona and Janine Gutierrez. Sunday All Stars has a nostalgic 1960’s American broadcast
feel to the show, from its good old beach boy and girl routines, to the uplifting cheerful glee among the hosts. Although Western productions are glamorous in a subdued manner, it leaves you feeling disconnected to the entertainer, whereas GMA delivers a warmer connection to your favourite celebrity exuding approachability. I think this fun loving approach to Sunday television makes a welcome change to reality TV or distant stars to whom you cannot possibly relate. Sunday All Stars encompasses the comical value of the American show “Saturday Night Live” with a serious entertainment edge. It is an all bellsand-whistles production that leaves you yearning for more.

THE CLASH TO THE DEATH THAT WILL DEFINE THE CENTURY FLOYD ‘MONEY’ MAYWEATHER vs MANNY ‘PACMAN’ PACQUIAO
T
by Jessica Nock
he coveted welterweight battle of the decade between two global boxing Powerhouses, was officially confirmed via social media on February 20th. In the sporting event the whole world has been dying to witness, Manny Pacquiao will face Floyd Mayweather, as the super-fight commences on May 2nd. At the majestic MGM Grand, the official ‘King of the Ring’ will be crowned in Mayweather’s hometown of Las Vegas, USA.
The MGM Grand dubbed “the Mecca of boxing,” has housed the best boxing showdowns of all time, and is notably where Pacquiao has won his last succession of twelve fights. The iconic venue will finally be graced with the presence of the two greatest pound-for-pound fighters of our generation. Set to shatter box office records, this head to head competition between these two fierce rivals, will undoubtedly write a new chapter of boxing history. This is the American versus the Filipino. A Five-division World Champion versus Boxing’s only Eight-division World Champion. The Number 1 versus the Number 3 seed in the Pound-for-pound list. ‘The Best Ever’ versus ‘The Fighting Congressman.’
This is MAYWEATHER versus PACQUIAO The stakes have never been higher. For Mayweather, the ‘Fighting fist of the Philippines’ could tarnish his entire reputation on May 2nd. This showdown could potentially ruin his perfect professional record of 47 wins and 0 losses – And for Pacquiao he could possibly conquer the undefeated American and claim for the taking, the number one pound-for-pound ranking.
‘MoneyMay’: The Purse-split Problem It is no surprise that Mayweather has called all the shots and been the dominant figure in terms of the negotiations and contracted requirements, regarding the purse split, infamous Olympic style drug testing clause and the fight venue.

Always the humble fighter, Pacquiao has agreed to a 60:40 split, in favour of Mayweather to accumulate the majority of the revenue generated from the Showdown. If the bout earns a staggering $300million dollar sum, Mayweather is set to pocket a hefty $180m with Pacquiao earning at least $100m. In 2010 when a potential match up between these two fighters first surfaced, Pacquiao had refused to agree to giving blood samples up until the weigh-in, because he feels this weakens him. Manny argues that taking blood too close to the fight is what caused his loss to Erik Morales in their first bout in 2005. However Pacquiao has since beaten Morales in spectacular fashion twice at the Thomas and Mack Centre in Las Vegas, both by astounding KOs, in the 10th and 3rd rounds respectively. www.auramagazine.eu

The Press Conference: March 11th
I
n the face off, the aggressor Pacquiao did not look phased by the bigger man as he painted an endearing smile on his face and stared down at a seemingly nervous Mayweather. This was a defining moment in boxing history with proof that after many years, the super-fight has now come to fruition, in a more hyped up event this year than what would have occurred five years ago, when both boxers were in their physical prime.
“We’re fighting the best fighter in the world, and we’re going to kick his ass, sorry.” - Freddie
- Pacman
It is widely known that Mayweather has a great cunning ability to psyche out and unsettle his opponents, therefore at the press conference Floyd was no different. He took a psychological jab at Pacquiao, referring to his losses to Morales in his first bout at Super Featherweight, the controversial defeat to Timothy Bradley by split decision and the more recent sixth round knockout by Juan Manuel Marquez in 2012.
Assuming an air of modesty, Mayweather unexpectedly put the overt trash talking to bed. However it is apparent that 7-times winner of the accolade ‘Trainer of the Year’ Freddie Roach, has accommodated this smack-talking tactic, slamming Mayweather Junior and Senior in an attempt to rattle a few cages in the run up to the fight.
Brushing this dirt off his shoulder, a spiritual fighter as ever, these comments had no impact on the brave and headstrong Filipino. Manny praised God for his achievements; he showed admiration and heart as he thanked all those who made the fight happen. It is increasingly obvious that Pacquiao is enthusiastic about pleasing the fans, giving them what they’ve demanded for six years and to restore pride to his homeland of the Philippines, of which he has

Furthermore there have been allegations by Freddie Roach and Team Pacquiao that The Money Team has been poaching potential sparring partners with increased payment to avoid training with Manny. The Pacman has since been in the ring with 8 times US Champion Kenneth Sims, whom was left with a bloody nose after four rounds of damage against the tough Filipino. Roach has also revealed that he has enlisted the help of one particular boxer whom was previously part of Mayweather’s camp. Roach describes him as “secret weapon right now” in an interview with On the Ropes Boxing Radio. “They are gifted with power and blazing hand speed and can simulate Floyd’s fighting style,” says Roach.
“When you lose it’s in your mind…from day one I was always taught how to be a winner” - Floyd Mayweather
This battle is so exciting purely because of their opposing stances and skillset, with Manny upping the ante with his agility, speed and power and Floyd bringing his smart timing and trapping technicality. Pacquiao’s perpetual movement and awkward hard to predict angles and when he’s going to throw those power punches, will certainly be an advantage in this fight. Also Manny’s rapid footwork and hand speed are of equal . measure, proving to be a lethal combination in the ring This is witnessed in his most recent fights against Algeiri and Bradley II, where the two opponents proved no match for his superior work-rate and punching statistics. However Mayweather’s sparring partner Cody Crowley has revealed in a YouTube clip on Dontae’s Boxing Nation that Floyd’s most effective weapon is that he is a counter puncher, he has a habit of “sucking you in and then he counters you,” “he makes you pay for every mistake you make.” Although with this in mind Roach and Manny believe they are prepared for him to avoid these attacks and this has been put into practice in sparring with young talented boxers. “My sparring partners gave me good work today. The Social Media Stirring Pot Thrilling us in the run up to May the 2nd Manny has been uploading several daily videos on his Instagram @emmanuelpacquiao documenting his tough gym workouts; including powerful punching bag work, uphill runs and shadow-boxing road workout training sessions.
Mayweather has responded but is keeping a relatively low profile in comparison to Pacquiao. On Instagram he can be seen kicking off his campaign with an insanely quick speed bag video and honing his muscles by chopping wood in his ‘caveman’ training.
Pacquiao is showing the world that he is ready to take on this fight with his explosive power and lightning speed. Through his social networks, Pacquiao’s loyal fans can truly feel part of the whole experience, as he is ready to take on the biggest fight in his career. Pacquiao is oozing confidence in his tweets; the usually silent destroyer is definitely out to prove that as an underdog is waiting for May the Second to shine again. @MannyPacquiao: “I was more worried about fighting @OscarDeLaHoya and @RealMiguelCotto than I am fighting @FloydMayweather” #MayweatherPacquiao @MannyPacquiao I’m here to prove that I can easily beat the undefeated #MayweatherPacquiao @MannyPacquiao Beating Floyd is good for boxing. “I think Manny has a big chance”: Cotto backing Pacquiao’s corner Miguel Cotto whom has lost to Pacquiao by a 12th round TKO (technical knock out) has edged toward a Manny victory over the American. Referring to Pacman’s explosiveness and quickness, Cotto believes that these qualities are going to be “big issues” for Floyd come May the 2nd. Cotto has also marginally lost to Mayweather – one of Floyd’s toughest wins, but noticeably gave the unbeaten boxer a hard time – just losing out by a unanimous judges decision, with the score sheet margin wider than the action of the fight reflected. Manny’s Achilles heel would be if he were to fall into one of Mayweather’s traps, because Floyd is a “smart boxer” says
Cotto. However with Pacquiao comes his valuable weapon in long-term trainer since 2001, Freddie Roach, with their fourteen-year partnership as coach-athlete being the longest in boxing history. Roach acknowledges Floyd’s capabilities during a recent interview with ABS-CBN saying, “Mayweather is very good at setting traps.” Therefore Roach has created a structured game plan to ensure Pacquiao doesn’t fall for Floyd’s set ups. Roach says regarding Mayweather “but he does it over and over again, and I know when he does it. So I show Manny how he does it, and I show Manny how to take that away from him.”
The Heavyweight Greats weigh in Despite being tremendous rivals, Heavyweight heroes ‘Real Deal’ Evander Holyfield and the Legendary ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson also believe a win for Manny Pacquiao is definitely on the cards. Holyfield a former undisputed Heavyweight champion predicts Pacquiao will pip him to the post by points. “Mayweather won’t win, because from what I’ve seen, boxing doesn’t want nobody to get out [of the sport] undefeated,” Holyfield predicted via Sports on Earth.
victorious. “Pacquiao had difficulties with opponents throwing over a hundred punches like Bradley and Marquez, while Mayweather is more like the scientific, defensive boxer who have the tendency to cover himself instead of attacking. Floyd Mayweather HAS TO FIGHT. He needs to trade punches with Manny Pacquiao in order to win this one” In an interview with boxingscene the ‘hardest hitter in heavyweight history’ can also be quoted saying, “Floyd is going to be hit and hurt more than he has ever been before.”
In an animated video as posted by Mike Tyson on YouTube, he demonstrates just why he believes the Filipino will be
The Final Countdown to May the Second From the get-go, the pundits are backing a ‘Prettyboy’ Mayweather win because of his unblemished record and odds currently stand at 2-1, with a percentage of 68%, a likelihood of a Mayweather victory. However in a thrilling interview with Manny Pacquiao on ESPN, it can be seen that 38% of people on twitter believe that Manny Pacquiao will defeat the unbeaten Floyd Mayweather by a KNOCKOUT, to this claim Pacquiao responded that there is a “big chance.” For the second time after his victory against Oscar De La Hoya, Pacquiao is the underdog. Packing ferocious bark and bite, Pacquiao thrives from being in this B-side position with a killing urge to prove himself to his critics. “Floyd should enjoy being the ‘A’ side while he can because www.auramagazine.eu
on May 2 Manny is going to put him on his backside,” Roach said via the latimes.com. One thing is for sure that Pacquiao is going to have to lay some dominating groundwork in the first couple of rounds to take advantage of Mayweather’s vulnerability during the earlier stages of the fight, to cling onto a lead over the American. Manny Pacquiao needs to employ a high work-rate to penetrate Floyd Mayweather’s offensive style, to seal a victory on May 2nd. Though it is certain that on May 2nd, time will stand still and the world will be transfixed to television screens watching the greatest fight in boxing history. AURAMAGAZINE • Issue II • May

LGBT
Home of the Golden Gays by Joel Medina
“Where loving and sharing is never ending”, these are the beautiful words from The Home of the Golden Gays that encompasses their mantra of unity and equality. Home of the Golden Gays was founded in 1975 by Justo Justo a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) spokesperson and columnist. She created a friendly care facility for the elderly homosexuals in the City of Pasay, Philippines. Sadly, when Justo died in 2012, the home also deceased and was relocated to a small apartment. Ramon Busa then had large shoes to fill and took over the mantle as president. The homeless elderly gays of the

Philippines have no state pension. They have also been denied and receive a lack of support from their own families. Eliminated from their homes they are deprived, subjecting to live and sleep in the street. They are a sheltered sector of the society that have been and always will be neglected by the local and national government, if there are not schemes implemented to aid their well being. “We are currently in touch with local

permanent residence...For the time being, the main concern is the daily sustenance of our members. We do not receive any assistance from the national/local government and we rely on “outreach programs” of NGOs and other selfless donors,” Ramon Busa, current president of the HGG. The elderly Filipino gays have experienced their own shares of hardship, being subjected to torment and prejudice during their livelihood, in their prime homosexuals were not accepted and tolerated in the community. However through their resilience, they embraced solidarity, stood tall, fought and remained proud of who they are. By sticking true to themselves, they made the Filipino community aware of who they are and show that they deserved to be loved. The rightful freedom and liberty we now possess and enjoy as members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender community, were because of the sacrifices of the fellow homosexuals who came before us. If it was not for them, we wouldn’t have become more accepted and understood in society today. However, there is still a long way for homophobia and discrimination to completely be eradicated from the minds of Filipino people.

We believe that we are here to extend our hands to those communities and or charities that uphold the objectives of Filipino LGBT UK. We wish to guide everyone to do the same.

The Filipino LGBT UK has an objective of helping the charities that look out for the welfare of fellow individuals identifying themselves as LGBT, most specially the Filipino LGBT back home. We were touched by the current poor housing situation of elderly Filipino gays and it ignited us to provide with the help that they deserve. Therefore the Filipino LGBT community in the UK started to help the Home for the Golden Gays. In 2013, we held a Drag Queen Contest to raise money. The money has helped them to buy rice, rubber sandals, umbrella, LPG tanks, food and medicine. This year, the Filipino LGBT UK Charity Ball has raised donations to help the Home of the Golden Gays. FIL MO

he FILIPINO LESBIAN MOVEMENT, known as ‘FIL MO’, was the First Filipino Lesbian Group created here in the UK and Europe. FIL MO is accredited by the Philippine Embassy (London UK) and Registered and Licensed in the United Kingdom. The Charity group was launched 3 years ago in May 2012, consisting of ten members under the leadership of Vannz Bio (President). It is an honour to be considered a part of a Filipino Organization, with an aspiration and purpose to promote equality within the Filipino LGBT Community. For many years Filipino lesbians have been walking the streets of the UK incognito, but have been sheltered due to the misconceptions of lesbians in the Filipino community. Barely living and surviving everyday life, they were once confined to personal spaces and affairs, without or if little room for social interactions. This is an insight as to how and why the birth of Fil Mo came into existence. Of the select few friends I made, there was always an idea of creating an organization comprised of mainly Lesbians, whereby the aim was to have the ability to raise funding through parties and events. We would then utilize these funds to aid the disadvantaged, less-fortunate children and vulnerable elderly people in the Philippines, via the support

of LGBT - with this ethos and visionary FiL Mo was born. Fil Mo is a group consisting of two Officers with a steadily growing number of members, formed from the values of friendship and a common desire to make a difference in the lives of Children back home, through projects and grassroots support. Having lived in the UK now for many years, this country has positively allowed us to experience an advantaged life in terms of sexual preference, sexual equality and the quality of lesbian life. Most of us live comfortably with the knowledge that there is little discrimination against the LGBT community in this country, but this still doesn’t withdraw complete injustice which can still remain prevalent within the Filipino community. In observing these attitudes, as a collective group we decided that enough was enough. Knowing that there were attempts to create similar organisations in the past, we did not want to procrastinate any longer and we braved the prospect of starting our project, in the making of the Filipino Lesbian Movement. We have the same desire to prove that although we are only Lesbians in the eyes of others -despite any negative connotations that may be unrightfully attached to this label AURAMAGAZINE • Issue II • May
“we too have hearts that wish to reach out, to give and share the blessings we have received.” The young children who are misplaced and disadvantaged, are reliant upon our contributions, no matter how big or small and these will make an impact to the future of the youth - with whom a difference in their lives can hold our hopes and dreams for our Country the Philippines as a whole. The name Fil-Mo derived from many combinations (LEGOLesbian gay Org, FiLGO - Filipino Lesbian Gay Org), we eventually agreed to the memorable FIL MO- The Filipino Lesbian Movement, a sweet sound encompassing the asking of feelings - feel mo?. Through various channels such as entertainment, exposure, sports and sponsorship we have laboured hard to reach the stage where Fil Mo is now. In lieu with LADLAD/LGBT, we saw similar avenues that we can explore in terms of belief systems, fundamental principles and the call of dutiful service to the needy especially disadvantaged Children in the Philippines. It is our pivotal belief that LGBT’s should have equal rights as everyone else, and from this we have formed our mantra “service to the needy as service of oneself.” In this respect, we authorized Bemz Benedito to fulfil FiL

Mo’s projectory vision ( for the month of November) in the amount of P50k, to be given to the disadvantaged Children of Payatas. We Officers have convened and agreed, that MYNP (Make Your Nanay proud), a foundation that Tito Boy Abunda supports, will be our regular project. This means that whenever we are able to raise funds, we will give back a certain amount to the MYNP project only. We thrive with great hope that people will be eager and be proud to contribute to our charity raising duties, knowing that the hard work back in the Philippines is well taken care of and entrusted to benefit those who are underprivileged. These beneficial acts to the community are headed by the honest and compassionate people of LADLAD/LGBT, led by the reliable Bemz Benedito. Filipinos here are largely touched by video showing the plight of children back in the Philippines. Judging from our last party, they were brought to tears, that they pledged to help via monetary donations to the FiL Mo cause. It will surely be a positive bearing to hear Mr. Boy Abunda promoting the same advocacy; and this impact will be tremendous in terms of support and pledges. We hope by this push, we can up the ante in our charity. By this missionary, we are trying to get the attention of all LGBT individuals here in the UK to aid in our charity work and be united as one.

rans songstress, Geri Love, is making waves in the current transgender scene with regular performances at London’s leading trans social hotspot “The Way Out Club,” hosted by Miss Vicky Lee for over 20 years . Born in Antipolo City, Philippines, Geri came to the UK to pursue her dream of becoming the first international oriental transgender singer to be embraced by the general public. Geri’s recent appearance in Royale Entertainment’s production “The Ladyboys of London” at the Hippodrome Theatre in the heart of the West end’s Leicester Square, proved to be a successful crossover into a mainstream crowd. Her genre of music and style is heavily influenced by Pop, Jazz, R&B, Motown, Urban and Funky Soul.
performing as a full time singer and comedienne in Japan and the Philippines. Her appearances have extended to performances here in the UK at Oxford Pride, Sparkle and The Shoreditch Festival. Following a Professional Musicianship course Geri is currently studying a BA degree in Creative Musicianship to serve as a foundation for a musical career. She is honing in her skills by co-writing original compositions with fellow musicians, engineers and other artists to produce an upcoming EP to be released this year. We managed to catch up with Miss Geri Love amidst her busy schedule exclusively for AURA Magazine: 1. Describe yourself in 3 words

2. As a trans performer what is your mission?
4. What’s the best thing about being a trans woman?
I would like to break into the mainstream market and be acknowledged as an Artist not because of my gender but because of my genuine artistic abilities. In addition, I would like to be an inspiration not just to the transgender world but to society as a whole.
The best thing about being a Transgender woman is being able to relate to both the male and the female psyche. The two genders often conflict from lack of understanding.
I was recently offered a lead role for a musical stage play, my lips are sealed at the moment and I don’t want to jinx myself but once it’s confirmed it will be my acting debut. A good foundation to access a mainstream audience - I can’t wait! I would like to appear in a reality show here in UK, as it is a stepping stone to Stardom! It’s nice to think positively and look forward to a brighter future. It’s all about thinking positive and when you think it’s going to happen, then it will happen.. just like the Law of Attraction..
5. “The Ladyboys of London” was recently staged at the Hippodrome Theatre how was that experience for you? It was an amazing experience working with so many talented people and being given a platform to showcase my talent as a singer backed up by amazing dancers. It was surreal Very Diva-ish! .....More importantly I ALWAYS LOVE THE ATTENTION! 6. Where do you see yourself in 5 year’s time?
3. If you had 3 wishes what would they be?
I see myself as an established recording artist and with commercial album releases. My first EP album is scheduled for release between June to July so fingers crossed.
I. To be a famous Recording Pop Artist like Amy Winehouse and Paloma Faith
7. What inspiring message can you give to young adolescent transsexuals around the world?
II. To have my own charity and create livelihood programs for the less fortunate
Be positive at all times and never let anyone put you down through demotivating comments they throw at you. At the end of the day they don’t know you only YOU know yourself. Strive hard for your dreams and use your failures as learning curves to grow as a better person! Smile and Dream.. no matter how big or small.. Follow your heart and do what you think is right. Most importantly, BE THE BEST YOU CAN BE AND GIVE 200% at all times. Make your parents proud of you despite what people think about your identity.. PROVE THEM WRONG!
III. To be an influential entity to the media and the general public whilst respected and valued for my opinions like Dana International in Israel, Zeki Muren in Turkey and Harisu in Korea.

What have eggs and bunnies got to do with Easter? A reflection of the Easter journey by Fr. Irvin T. Morastil, OMI
E
aster bunnies and Easter eggs have become the most commercially recognized symbol of Easter, with easter egg hunting becoming a popular activity that many children and parents eagerly participate in. Due to us living in a highly commercialized and secularized world, the true religious meaning and origins of Easter have been ignored and forgotten; the story of the Resurrection of Christ has now been slowly eliminated. Sadly, the Easter Bunny has now become a much anticipated substitute for Easter, just like Santa Claus is for Christmas!
Easter eggs, as long as we do not lose the meaning of the symbols and replace them with new cultural values that are completely contrary to the Gospel. These comprise some of the issues many parents and Church leaders have to confront. For purposes of evangelization, Missionaries struggle to find ways in order to connect and communicate the Gospel of Jesus Christ to consumerist cultures, unfamiliar with biblical stories or narratives. Therefore, we strive to find the connection between these secular symbols in order to fit in with religious significance.
There is nothing essentially evil about the Easter bunny and

through our own “passion” and “agony in the garden” too, as we live our lives in this “valley of tears.” Whether we like it or not, this “passion” and “agony” felt in this “valley of tears” leads us to spiritual death – death to our pride, death to our hopes, death to our desire to live. However just like Christ, who welcomed and confronted death, proved to us that this was not the ultimate end, but as a means and a way to enter into a new reality; a new life with God. With Jesus’ resurrection, we are given hope. In every anguish, we know there is consolation. In every failure, there is triumph and victory. In every pain and sorrow, there is happiness and joy. In every death, there is new life!
Life on earth has never been that easy for us. Each of us go through our own “passion” and “agony in the garden” too, as we live our lives in this “valley of tears.”
As true to Easter, the rabbits symbolize fertility and life. The eggs serve as a reminder of Christ’s return to life. It was adapted as a symbol of Christ’s resurrection from the tomb, a hard casket from which new life will emerge. Eggs replicate a symbol for renewal and rebirth, an image that reiterates the meaning of Christ’s resurrection from the dead. We do not have to look far in order for us to understand the meaning of Easter. Our very own life experiences will help us understand the meaning of the poignant Religious holiday.

“It’s About Time”

ean-Pierre Lupdag is a London based painter currently studying fine art at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. He works predominantly in oils; applying thick, heavy amounts of paint to the canvas to add density and texture. His recent works revolve around philosophy and scientific theories on Time.
Having produced a series of paintings inspired by the essay “Of Other Spaces” by philosopher Michel Foucault, Jean-Pierre has invented his own “Heterotopia” a space that, according to Foucault, contains juxtapositions and contradictions. In his Heterotopia, the illusion of time can be seen as night and day, this is shown in the same painting. Time is not linear, the past present and future happen simultaneously and as a result, the figure exists more than once at the same time, as do the paintings. “The distinction between the past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion” a theory by Albert Einstein, in which Jean-Pierre’s most recent piece “ It’s About Time” speaks about. In this surreal world he has created, which consists of starry nights and claustrophobic rooms, the

windows are the focal points of his paintings as they act as portals into alternate dimensions. Jean-Pierre exists as a painted version of himself, seamlessly travelling across dimensions through these “windows.” “It’s About Time” was a part of the exhibition “Curiosity.” It presented a show consisting of seven London based artists exhibiting work including sculpture, video, performance and painting; playing with ideas of proportion and perspective.
“The distinction between the past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion” This exhibition was an exploration into themes of tension, fragmentation and wander, reminiscent of dreams and our associations. A collection of inquisitive, unanswered questions.

Money Matters: Technology and 21st century money transfers to the Philippines
A
round the world, more than 10 million Filipinos live and work outside their home country. They are one of the most dispersed communities of migrant workers – and have become known as Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW ).
Many Filipinos head abroad to support friends and family back home: they regularly send a share of their income back to the Philippines. In total, more than USD 26bn were sent to the Philippines in 2013 - making the country the thirdlargest recipient of remittances in the world. Only 10 years ago, if you lived in the UK as an OFW, sending money home would be an extremely arduous affair – think of the long trips across town, the time spent queuing at transfer agents, the need to handle cash, and the appalling customer care. The world of money transfers desperately needed to change - and WorldRemit was born out of this necessity. Set up in 2010 by Ismail Ahmed, a Somali-born specialist in international remittances, the company is now leading the charge against the traditional money transfer networks. Available in more than 50 countries, WorldRemit is a service that’s bringing money transfers into the 21st century.

You can sign up to WorldRemit in a few simple steps – just enter the amount you wish to send and your recipient’s details. Payment can be made by bank transfer, credit card, or debit card. WorldRemit also offers low fees and clear, upfront pricing so you’ll see any fees and the exchange rate right at the beginning of the process, meaning there will be no surprises when you come to pay. Money transfers should be convenient not only for the sender, but also for those who receive the funds. For Filipinos, WorldRemit offers transfers to bank accounts, Mobile Money accounts, cash-pickup locations, and home delivery. All transfers to BDO, Metrobank, and PNB are available to recipients instantly – as are all Mobile Money transfers to the Philippines. Sending money from WorldRemit’s mobile app networks. The support from friends and family abroad is vital for many Filipinos. Remittances are used to pay for all sorts of expenses – ranging from rent and healthcare to transportation costs. Sending money home can be an important lifeline. When getting money to those affected quickly mattered more than ever during the 2013 typhoon Haiyan, we witnessed the massive impact of remittances and donations on relief efforts. Remittances matter not only in routine expenses and disaster recovery, but also in the development of the Filipino

economy. As investments, the often high incomes earned by Filipinos abroad can help start-ups and small business at home. Filipinos around the world work incredibly hard because they care about their friends and family at home. At WorldRemit, we work incredibly hard because we care about our customers. Sending money should be convenient, simple, and low cost – and we will continue to work with banks and mobile operators in the Philippines to improve our service and change money transfers for the better.

Immigration
Filipinos in Britain
A
by Gene Alcantara
t the recent successfully concluded 3rd Global Summit of Filipino Diaspora held at the Manila Hotel, the United Kingdom and Europe were well represented particularly by officers and members the European Network of Filipino Diaspora (ENFiD). Rodel Rodis, one of the FilipinoAmerican leaders of the Global Filipino Diaspora Council suggested that instead of the estimated 14 million Filipinos supposedly now living outside the Philippines, we should be using the figure of 20 million. Quite bold, one would think, but since nobody has a handle on the figures really, why not 20 million indeed? That set me to thinking about my own host country, the United Kingdom, and Europe as a whole. I have been saying for many years now that there are at least 300,000 Filipinos in Great Britain. A huge number, you might say. The Philippine Embassy in London uses a more cautious 250,000. The Commission on Filipinos compendium suggests that there are an estimated 218,777 Filipinos in the UK (74% permanent, 15% temporary, and the rest irregular). But just how many Filipinos are there in the United Kingdom? And how many are there in Europe (CFO’s total figure in 2012 is 768,326)? Since nobody knows for sure, this article attempts to come up with some “guestimates”. A few months ago an article in a British newspaper published some statistics on British citizenship acquisition by nationality. Filipinos figured prominently after the Indians and the Pakistanis, the top two migrants in terms of numbers who migrated to the UK. Following a bit of research, I came up with the following table:
58
www.auramagazine.eu
British citizenship granted in the UK: Philippines: 2007: 10,840 2008: 5,380 2009: 11,750 2011: 7,133 2012: 8,122 2013: 10,374 Total: 53,599 Average: 8,933 The figures are very interesting and a revelation. For now here are actual figures of how many Filipinos have become British citizens for the 6 years that I was able to find exact statistics for. For each of the years, the proportion of Filipinos acquiring British citizenship has fluctuated from AURAMAGAZINE • Issue II • May
4-7%. So taking the total of nationality grants from 1975, when I think Filipinos started gaining permanent residence and then possibly British citizenship, until 2012 of 3.23 million and applying the average of 5.5% gives us a total of 177,550. Adding the figure for 2013 gives us a revised estimated total of 187,924 Filipinos who have become British. But what does this all mean for Filipinos in the UK? Well the answer is it means everything. When we increase our numbers, particularly legal numbers, in the UK or elsewhere in the more enlightened countries of Europe, then so does our clout grow. When we become British citizens, it means that we acquire rights, as well as responsibilities of course. But first of these is the fact that you are a full voter and therefore have a voice in the governance of the country. You can also stand for public office. You can now leave the country for good but will remain a British citizen for life. You also acquire the advantages of being a European Economic Area (EEA) citizen which allows you freedom of movement to live and work without restriction in any of the 28 member countries. Talking of Europe, not all countries allow Filipinos to acquire nationality. In Greece it is practically impossible to become a Greek citizen. I say practically because I know foreign nationals, including Filipino, who have managed to acquire Greek passports. But I have met so many Filipinos who have spent over 30 years there and yet they cannot obtain citizenship. Thus the Greeks are depriving them of the ability to participate fully in their national life. It also prevents them from being able to exercise Treaty Rights as full European citizens. In Italy it is hard enough to acquire Italian citizenship, what with their language and the requirement to have certain square meters of accommodation. It seems Spain is the best place to go, since a work permit holder could acquire residence within 2 years although it seems they are starting to get stricter even with a former colony like the Philippines. For those ready to brave being undocumented, France would be ideal as they do not consider being an illegal alien a crime and therefore they will not pick you up on the street or raid your workplace or home. Otherwise all very strict and very difficult, but if you succeed in becoming European citizens then the payoff is immense. How easy is it to obtain British citizenship? Well, there are numerous ways to approach this question and I list some below which would require naturalisation. Previously it was the easiest thing to do. Once you have completed 4 years on a work permit, you would be entitled to Indefinite Leave to www.auramagazine.eu
Remain (ILR). Spouses completed 2 years and then obtained ILR. Since the disastrous open door policy of the Labour Government which allowed a massive influx of European migrants and changed the balance of the population, which stretched employment, local education, social services, housing, and salaries, the Conservative-Lib Dem Coalition Government tightened up on immigration. From open door to almost complete shutdown, the Tories/Lib Dems attempted to staunch the inflow of migrants to no avail. It is because the Europeans themselves cannot be restricted this way under the Free Movement rights enshrined in European legislation. They could only tighten the screws really on non-European migrants, as softer targets. All it has done is created friction and resentment of migrants. However there are still ways to meet the ever stringent requirements. Below are some of the routes into the UK, many of which lead to ILR, and then finally British citizenship. Some of the routes indicate the potential magnitude of Filipino entrants and stayers: 1. Work Permit holders. Once you have spent 5 years on a work permit, you can apply for ILR. This requires you to have passed the ‘Life in the UK Test,’ which is to ensure you have knowledge of life and society, as well as an English test. Considering that some 60,000 Filipino nurses were allowed into Britain in the last decade or so, one can safely assume that there are at least 60,000 Filipino nurses who may have since acquired British citizenship and passports. To that we could add spouses, and perhaps an average of say one to two children. Let’s estimate 180,000 people. 2. Employment not requiring a work permit such as domestic workers. Although they were being brought into Britain regularly since the 1970s under the work permit system, the influx of domestic workers intensified during the first Gulf War and then the 2nd Gulf War. at this point thousands of domestic workers are known to have been brought here by their employers. It all stopped in 2012 when the Coalition abolished the domestic worker visa. It has been claimed that 15,000 domestic worker visas were issued on an annual basis. So How many are Filipinos? If we estimate say 20% are Filipino domestic workers entering the UK, in the last 10 years alone that would equate to 30,000. Many of them bring spouses/ partners or children into the country once they are stable enough financially, or once they have become permanent residents. 3. Spouses. Previously you would get a 27 month leave to enter and after 24 months you can become entitled to ILR and then one year after to British citizenship; now it is being equalised with other immigration categories so that AURAMAGAZINE • Issue II • May
59
you would need 5 years to acquire ILR and then another year for British citizenship. When mail order brides were all the range, a lot of Filipino wives I believe were brought into the country by lonely British husbands who longed for the caring of an oriental woman, stereotypically known for their submissiveness. Nowadays this is more restricted in view of the financial requirement (minimum salary of sponsor £18,600) but just how many came/come through this route? I have no figure so let us say 10,000 are involved. 4. Students. At the height of the student visa deluge, the British Embassy in Manila was supposed to be issuing around 10,000 visas a year for possibly 3-4 years. So just how many students obtained visas to the UK, and how many of them have eventually left? In my immigration work, I come across so many former students who have stayed without authorisation when the Home Office closed down private colleges, so they could no longer afford to be students. Shall we say 10,000 have remained? 5. Tourists. I read many years ago now that around 14,000 tourists are allowed into the country by the British Embassy Visa Section in Manila. Out of this, it is believed that 2,000 do not return home and get absorbed into the system in Britain somehow, probably ending up as undocumented. So if we talk about 2,000 a year, there may be 24,000 in the past 10 years alone. This figure is probably underestimated. The British Embassy, has from April 2013 to March 2014 issued more than 49,000 visas to tourists and business visitors to come to the UK from the Philippines. How many are likely to stay on once they get on British soil? This category is the main source of undocumented Filipino migrants. 6. Birth and children. There was an old statistic that the Philippine Embassy released a few years ago now. Apparently 5 Filipino babies are born in the UK every day. That is a staggering figure, meaning that at least 1,825 babies are born every year of Filipino origin. So can we say this for every year of the last 10 years? That means 18,250 have been born in the last 10 years alone. From the above table of Filipinos who acquired British nationality and the list of visa routes into Britain, we can make guestimates of how many Filipinos there might be
in the UK. So we know that there are probably 188,000 Filipinos who have acquired British nationality. Then we have the 60,000 nurses who came in the last decade with their families; let us use 60,000. Domestic workers 30,000. Spouses, say 10,000. Students, say 10,000. Tourist, let’s stick to 24,000. Babies are another 18,250. That is a grand total of 340,250. Perhaps I am double counting some of the figures above. It is hard to tell, that’s why the other figures will remain guestimates. The only possible certainty is the figure for British citizens of 188,000. However we know that temporary and undocumented migrants abound, so a figure of 340,250 Filipinos or Filipino origins in the UK is as good as anybody’s guess. But what does this all mean for Filipinos in the UK in terms of the Philippines? Well our power as a community will also grow exponentially as politicians back home realise that we have become a powerful voting bloc. For if we “20 million” Overseas Filipinos all become dual Filipinos and exercise our votes, we could swing votes everywhere from the Senate to the Presidency. OFs are I hope more difficult to buy or bribe, having been exposed to more mature democracies abroad, and could make or break politicians. Economically our strength also increases. We are no longer just remitters of US$25.1 billion a year, but investors in the Philippines. Businesses realise this, from airline companies to condominiums and real estate companies, to telecommunications, and of course the banks. It is the government and indeed politicians that are perhaps the slowest to realize the power of the OFs. President Benigno Aquino himself forgets to include OFs in his State of the Nation addresses, and was shamed by Pope Francis who during his recent visit praised the contribution of Filipino migrants. So going back to how many Filipinos there are in the United Kingdom, the number will always matter, and increasingly so if we want to play a full role in both our host and home countries, to get the recognition we deserve. Perhaps at the next Global Summit I should insist that there are 400,000 Filipinos in the UK to drive home my point. And as for Europe, shall I say 1 million?

World Culture
Hunt for ‘maids’ gets tougher, but why?
A
by Malcolm Conlan
s many people know, I have the greatest respect for the Philippines and Filipino people. I feel this way for a number of reasons. Firstly, Filipinos are caring with a positive attitude. They are also generally a happy, industrious people who work hard to help not only themselves, but also their families and the country. The Filipino mentality always seems to be to work hard to provide for their loved ones. It’s almost part of the Filipino culture back home in the Philippines, to study a course of education that would result in acquiring a job overseas, be it nursing, engineering, hotel management or an array of other courses geared up to provide training and hopefully enhance employment prospects overseas. According to The World Bank, in 2013 over 26 billion dollars was remitted back home to the Philippines, this equated to 9.8% of the countries’ GDP. Therefore finding a job abroad is not only important to the individual, but also of national importance to the Philippine economy! So as you can imagine, Overseas Filipino Workers contribute a great deal to the country. Every dollar or equivalent remitted to the Philippines by OFW’s is used to support their families abroad. This money is then spent in the country, further helping the economy. Every year however, OFW’s are forced to send even more money back home as the cost of living in the country is rising fast!
62
www.auramagazine.eu
When I went back home last week, I visited the SM Mall North, near Pasay and had some dinner in one of the many restaurants. It cost me nearly seven pounds to eat, with a freshly squeezed orange itself costing £2! Bearing in mind there are many Filipinos earning only around 400 pesos a day, a glass of orange juice would end up costing half of their daily salary! With all of this in mind, without the overseas dollar, one wonders whether some of the malls would even have been built. Unless you are lucky enough to bag a job in one of the many call centers in the country, or have a well paid job, luxuries like going out and eating in nice restaurants seem unaffordable to the masses. With that in mind, many choose to leave the Philippines and end up working abroad. As well as jobs in hotels, ships, hospitals, oil rigs, airlines, a great many end up working in private homes as domestic helpers or DH. I believe that through these OFW’s sending money each month, the Philippine government and economy have come to rely partly on this revenue gained from the dollars pumped into the country via the domestic workers. Going back to the global recession, as far as I am aware, fortunately the Philippines was one of the very few countries in the world to have been virtually unaffected. OFW’s however, had to work harder to send more money due to the falling rates of other currency, our family included. So, I wonder what things will be like in the future. When I went back home recently, I had to transit in the UAE. I read a very interesting report in a local newspaper, XPRESS, Abu Dhabi. It discussed the search for ‘maids’ (not a term I am fond of as it makes me think of servants and slaves, which had been abolished in the 1800’s!) The report mentioned that many countries had stopped sending their citizens to the UAE after reports of bad AURAMAGAZINE • Issue II • May
treatment and working conditions. According to the report, the Philippines stopped sending workers in June 2014. In the report, a local Emarati woman explained that she ‘could not survive even a day without househelp’ So I guess my question is directed at the UAE government and even citizens of the UAE, why do you think it might be harder to find Filipino workers? I have great respect for the UAE, however the question must remain, whilst domestic workers and house helpers in the UAE continue to be poorly paid, often working very long hours with difficult living conditions, it seems obvious to me that there will be less Filipino citizens going there in search of employment. Even then, those still wishing to do so might not be permitted to do so by the Philippine government. With all of that in mind and the decline of OFW’s filling these positions, does this in turn mean that we will see a decline in dollars being remitted back home? How can the vast array of malls, leisure attractions and businesses, as well as property companies survive through local income only? So the challenge I guess must be for the UAE and other countries employing OFW’s to improve pay, working conditions and treatment of not only Filipinos but citizens of other countries working there. Otherwise they may struggle to find domestic help from abroad, so we might even see a day when locals
from the UAE and other Gulf states may actually be forced to do their own domestic chores! So to the readers of Aura magazine, I do believe that some Gulf States are getting worried about the lack of available employees and I hope this will be reflected not only in pay cheques, but also in living and working conditions. As well as having a keen interest in the plight of domestic workers from the Philippines, I would also like to research other topics of concern for Filipinos worldwide. I have seen many groups on the Internet and indeed Facebook campaigning for a system of trial by jury in the Philippines. As well as sharing my views, I would like to hear yours. You are welcome to get in touch with your thoughts on the issue. Until next month, paalam Mabuhay at maraming salamat po. You are of course welcome to write to me with your views and indeed stories. The Trappist Monastery chapel is more than just a solemn place where people say their prayers to the Almighty One. As for your souvenirs and pasalubongs, make sure to buy them at the Trappist Gift shop. As far as I know, all of the ingredients used for their mouthwatering delicacies are naturally grown in the monastery’s sacred grounds. For me, the best delicacies to buy in this gift shop are their dried mangoes, butterscotch, piyaya, jellies and calamansi jam. Of course, the gift shop also sells non-edible souvenirs, such as rosaries and refrigerator magnets.

The Innovator who Broadcasted Filipino Food to the U.K: Pepe’s Kitchen by Adrian Williams | Photos by Patrick Camara Ropeta
“Pepe’s Kitchen is focused on preserving traditional Filipino dishes with an updated look and feel to suit the modern palette.”
P
epe’s Kitchen has been hosting Supper clubs and Pop-Ups in London since early 2013 and providing Philippine Inspired Canapés and Catering since early 2011. A pioneer of Philippine Cuisine on the UK Foodie scene, Mae, Owner & Chef of Pepe’s Kitchen remembers how Filipino Food was like when she launched. “When I first started, I looked around and saw that there was a massive gap in the UK’s knowledge and appreciation of Philippine Cuisine. British people would only really try Filipino food if they knew a Filipino person. There was a lack of visibility of Filipino restaurants and venues serving good quality Filipino food. My mission is to bring Filipino Food up to date and to the UK whilst still keeping hold of our traditions and flavours.” Mae is no stranger to the Kitchen. Raised by her father, Jose ’Pepe’ Magnaye, in Leyte, in the Philippines, it was by her father’s side that her love of fresh ingredients and traditional

dishes was born. After arriving in the UK as a teenager with her mother in 1999, Mae settled in London, co-founding influential NGO Philippine Generations. It was during a series of projects focusing on Philippine Cuisine that her love of cooking really came to the fore. “I was inspired by the words and concepts of Amy Besa and Romy Dorotan, who are successful Filipino food entrepreneurs in New York. We brought them over for a Philippine Generations event and their style really suited the way I like to cook. It was part of this series of events that I was asked to represent the Philippines in a UKTV Food TV series called ‘New British Kitchens’ in 2008. In it, I showed Hardeep Singh Kohli (TV Presenter and Finalist on the first series of Celebrity Master Chef ) around London teaching him more about the Filipino Community. Then they asked me to cook in their Studio! I was so nervous, but we had no alternative at such a late stage. I taught John Torode (of Master Chef and Smith’s of Smithfield fame) how to cook Sinigang and Lumpia!” AURAMAGAZINE • Issue II • May
This experience made Mae realize that maybe cooking and food could be her calling. People were recognizing her after the show aired and were asking, ‘Are you a Chef?” and “Where is your restaurant?” In January 2011, Mae’s father, Pepe, passed away in his home province of Batangas. Thus the passion and fire to cook was reborn. This passion coupled with her work with Philippine Generations in promoting Filipino Culture helped shape the ethos that Pepe’s Kitchen lives by. “The best Filipino Food is always cooked in someone’s home. That feeling of community and food is what I want to show every time I cook. I want people to realize that Philippine Cuisine is also healthy. Filipino food can be presented in a modern way yet still maintain those traditional flavours that everybody remembers. I use fresh ingredients and local produce to create traditional dishes. Amazingly there are plenty of Filipino ingredients now available in the UK.” Mae has been mentioned in mainstream British media channels as well as some Filipino media too. These include; Timeout, Fabulous Magazine (from The Sun Newspaper), The Marylebone Journal, Edible Experiences, Grub Club, La Belle Assiette, The Londonist, TNT Magazine, Mabuhay Magazine, Abante.com.ph, ABS-CBN, AskMen, LondonDateGuide.com, LDNLife.com, CornerMag.com, London-Eating.co.uk, Juan in the EU, just to name a few, as well as numerous UK Foodie blogs and websites. “I try to incorporate regional dishes that even Filipinos have not tried! Last year, I hosted, what is to my knowledge, the first ever Halal Filipino Supperclub. This helps to make Filipino food exciting! Not just the usual Adobo and Afritada, I incorporate regional dishes into my menus, like Visayan Humba, Tiyula Itum from Mindanao, Vigan Empanadas or exciting dishes like Lecheflan Cake, Durian Ice Cream or some of the Canapés I produce.” Over the past 3 years, Mae has seen the landscape change, with more Filipino Chefs and Supper clubs emerging. “The more Filipino Chefs the better. I do not see them as competition as we all have our own concepts and focus, plus we all know each other too which is great for Filipino Food.“ Mae is not a fan of the term ‘Fusion’ citing that Filipino food is inherently Filipino. “I am against the idea that Philippine Cuisine is ‘Fusion Food’. This is because most of the dishes we know and love are our own. There are some dishes that are borrowed www.auramagazine.eu

with influences from our Asian neighbours and Spanish & American colonizers. Today you can say someone’s concept can be ‘Fusion’ as they mix different cuisines, however generally I wouldn’t say Philippine Cuisine is ‘Fusion’. As a people, regionally we take something and make it our own. Local tastes and produce vary so much that the same dish can be very distinct to each region AND household. Also saying ‘Fusion’ disrespects our cuisine and cultural history. It is almost saying we don’t have anything of our own, or that we didn’t have anything before the Spanish came, which is wrong. My logo incorporating Baybayin proves that we had a thriving and developed culture pre-Spain.” Mae’s pride in Philippine Cuisine goes hand in hand with her pride in Philippine Culture, this is something Mae wants the next generation to feel inspired by. “We need to give our children and next generations something to be proud of and something for them to take on and continue. Just like what our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal said ‘The youth is the hope of our future’. I think Whitney Houston said something similar too! My goal is to have my own restaurant to pass to my daughters and to see that Philippine Cuisine is more recognized here in the UK.

Lumpiang Shanghai Recipe by A4J Catering

O
ur recipe for this month is my children’s favourite, Lumpiang Shanghai. This dish is incredibly simple to make, so I also tend to cook extra to freeze for later. Therefore this tasty recipe is great for afternoon merienda (snack time), as a delightfully moreish treat for the family to enjoy. This spring roll can be served with various sauces: sweet chili is commonly used as the favourite; however my personal preference would be a spicy garlic vinegar dip, to enhance the natural pork flavours.
Originating from our Chinese neighbours, Lumpiang Shanghai is a common dish eaten during celebrations and feasts in the Philippines. It is made from a mixture of ground pork, vegetables and spices held together by a beaten egg and wrapped before being fried. The name Shanghai brands this dish as a meat spring roll that will have your taste buds dancing with a variety of fun recipes from the Philippines! These recipes provide a way for us to authentically introduce our culture to the Western world the best way we know how- through filling our stomachs! Because we all know just how much Filipinos love food!
Ingredients ½ Kilo Ground Pork 1 large carrots grated 2 spring onions finely chopped 1 tbsp garlic powder ½ tsp ground black pepper Pinch of salt 1 egg 1 pack of spring roll wrappers 3 cups cooking oil
Instructions In a mixing bowl, combine all the ingredients with the pork starting with the carrots, spring onions, salt, ground black pepper, garlic powder, and 1 piece raw egg. Position your spring roll wrapper diagonally so one corner is facing you. Place 1 tsp of the mixture in the corner closest to you and roll twice, fold the sides and then roll till you get to the end. Allow some space for you to seal with egg wash. Do this until the whole mixture has been consumed. Heat the cooking oil in a frying pan (to determine if the oil is hot enough, splash a bit of water and if the oil sizzles then your oil is ready! CAUTION Make sure you are not too close to the frying pan when doing this). Deep-fry the lumpia for 10 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the pan and let the excess oil drip by placing a kitchen towel on your plate. Transfer to a serving plate. Serve with a choice of dipping sauces. Katstails | Smokey Sour by Katstails | Photos by Miguel Livelo
After easing into Aura’s March edition you all must be wondering, who and what is Katstails. Katherine (Kat), is a British born Filipina raised in East London, who first started working in the hospitality industry in 2009. She has worked for various bars and clubs in London such as PUNK lounge bar and nightclub, hotspots for inviting names with the likes of Kate Moss, Paris Hilton and Lady Gaga as guests. She has also worked for the infamous London Jazz Club Ronnie Scotts, in which she has had the pleasure of having acts such as Stevie Wonder, Prince and Seth Macfarlane. Kat now works as the Head Bartender for one of London’s best-hidden secrets, Meursault Bar and Club. Meursault is an underground bar in the heart of London’s richest borough Kensington & Chelsea, where AURA magazine had their launch this time last month. The concept, Katstails, came from Kat’s passion of creating cocktails. She shares this through social mediums such as her Instagram and Facebook. After working in the hospitality industry for the last seven years, Kat now wants to share her passion, knowledge and daily cocktail development with others.

This month’s AURA edition features Kat’s new creation the ‘Smoky Sour’ inspired by the classic Whiskey Sour.
Ingredients 25ml Lagavulin 16yr 25ml Cointreau Orange Liqueur 30ml Fresh Lemon Juice 25ml Orgeat (Almond) Syrup 1 Dash Angostura Bitter 1 Dash Orange Bitter 1 Egg White
Tools Cocktail Shaker Jigger (Spirit Measurer) Hawthorn Strainer You can find the entire bar equipment you need at any kitchen equipment supplier, the most common store you may find in London is Nisbets.
Method Add all the ingredients together into a cocktail shaker. Be sure to add only one dash of each bitter, as anymore can create a heavier taste to the cocktail. Once all your ingredients have been added you may ‘dry’ shake* the cocktail. *Dry Shake: Adding no ice to the ingredients.
Tip: You can take the spiral off the strainer and add it into the shaker whilst dry shaking, it acts as a whisk creating a beautiful foam. The foam is an important part of the cocktail, and is created by adding the egg whites. It gives a very smooth and almost dry taste to the cocktail. Once you have dry shaken all parts, you may now shake including ice, to chill the cocktail. Thereafter, pour (no need to double strain) the cocktail into a rocks glass (9oz) and garnish with an orange peel.
Tip: As I mentioned in AURA’s first edition, when adding any peel be sure to remove the white skin (piff ) from the bottom to avoid adding bitterness. Cut the edges parallel on both ends of the skin and zest over the cocktail. You can find a short video of this on the ‘katstails’ Instagram page. You should now find your self with an extremely smooth and well- balanced ‘Smoky Sour’. It is called a Smoky Sour because it is based on the whiskey Lagavulin 16yr, a complex, rich and peaty flavor, which is distilled in Scotland’s beautiful Lagavulin bay. Now sit back and enjoy. www.auramagazine.eu

Living a short but beautiful life by Rose Eclarinal | photos by Rose Eclarinal & Pam Jaen

arlier in February this year, I had the honour of interviewing Doreen Jean Mooney, the first Filipina to be awarded the Member of the British Empire or MBE for her significant achievement as a charity worker. Mooney spearheaded projects to address anti-social behavior and forge social cohesion in the local community of Kingstanding, Birmingham. She officially received the MBE at Ward 10 Good Hope Hospital in Birmingham on Friday 20th February. Mooney, who was battling breast cancer, was scheduled to attend the investiture at the Buckingham Palace at a later date, in the presence of her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. But due to her rapidly deteriorating health, the ceremony was held a week earlier, and officiated at the hospital by an appointed representative of the Queen. Twelve years ago, the mother of three from Butuan migrated to the UK for work. She also had a second chance at love and married her British husband, Duncan, who became very supportive of her work and passion.

M o o n e y developed a charity called New Heights in Kingstanding, one of the most deprived areas in the UK, with teenagers manifesting anti-social behaviour, among others. The charity, which was started in 2004, has since received local and national recognitions and awards, among them are the Prime Minister’s Big Society Award and the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. Less than 48 hours after receiving the award, she sadly succumb to breast cancer. Doreen was only 47 years old. the award from the Queen? I thought, “Oh, have you got a choice then?” Yes, so you have a choice whether to accept the award or not. [So, you can actually decline. I said, “It’s not a choice between awful food and…” Of course I accepted. So I received that letter through the post, asking whether I’d accept the award from the Queen, because a group of people had nominated me. So it was wonderful because at that night I had bad news from the hospital. So I was really down, I was driving home feeling ill, and when I got home I read the letter. I thought, “Oh, how fantastic this is.” However it was kept in the strictest confidence because you cannot pre-empt the media, so we had to keep it a secret. Since I accepted the offer I haven’t heard any news since, so I didn’t know if it had gone through or not, until New Years Eve.
the support from The Big Lottery, and other grant-making charities.
On receiving the news about the award
One volunteer of mine, she’s in her 80s and she lost her youngest child to cancer. She said with New Heights, it made her smile again. Because, you after losing your child and she started to work with and in serving people, she said it taught her how to smile again after the funeral of her son. Working in the cafe or in the centre just gives them a purpose in life. A lot of our volunteers are widowed, and so if we hadn’t gotten these facilities, we hadn’t gotten these venues, they would be very lonely at home, now they become their
The Queen awarded me the MBE on New Years Day as part of the New Years Honours List. To me it’s a big honour, it’s a big achievement. When I did those things, when you do things for people, you don’t really look forward to the reward, but you look forward to the results of what you’re doing to the person and how that would change a person’s life. So, when I was given the award it was fantastic. But, saying that, it was also the downhill of my health, so I haven’t really celebrated it, because it was only just over a month ago. I haven’t really celebrated the award. I was given that award because of the impact I’ve done in the local community. I developed a charity called New Heights in Kingstanding. Kingstanding is one of the poorest areas in the UK. I got a job, a blank canvas, do everything you can to change the community. So together with the boss - the priest - who appointed me, and another individual called Karen, we drove the project together. My office back then was the kitchen of the priest, and since then we got a derelict shop and made it into a community cafe, and now we have a 700,000 –worth of community centre - eco-friendly and serving thousands of people in the community. From nothing it has grown to this state. We raised money to get that, so that’s why we got awards through the years. I only developed the project in 2007. It just makes your day. It makes you smile, you know? That’s the aim, isn’t it? To make a difference in a person’s life, whether it’s a life-changing one or just makes the person feel better. And seeing that in the community, it’s just amazing. You’ll go there from here and you’ll see the transformation we’ve done in that community. I’ve only been a full-time employee since… and I work with volunteers, that’s why we got the awards from big organisations and we’ve got www.auramagazine.eu
In 2013, just two weeks before I got diagnosed with cancer, I went to Number 10 Downing Street to receive an award from the Prime Minister for the Big Society Award. Last June, 2014, I went to Buckingham Palace for the garden party for the Queen’s voluntary service because I work with volunteers. We cannot afford paid staff so every week we have about 30 service providers coming to our premises to serve people for free. because I couldn’t take the sadness . From that it became overwhelming, we became victims our own success, because imagine the 17 locations in the UK—we collected loads and loads, it became truckloads. So truckloads came to the centre, to the International Christian Fellowship Church, so we were didn’t know what to do. From 100 bags it became thousands of bags, so how do we send it to the Philippines? was our biggest problem - how to store, how to repack them? One of my volunteers had a huge storage space, so we were able to store things there… Eventually we were able to send three 40-foot containers to the Philippines. On leaving work In the last two weeks I’ve had to let go, because… I’m going anyway, so why hang onto it? I have laid a foundation, I’ve done my best and it’s time for someone to take over. My last… my last presence in the community was in November. What happened, you see, last year when I was told I’ve only got a year to live and I cannot walk far, I thought ‘I’m going to challenge this, I’m going to walk 10,000 steps’ - that means five miles. So I chose a place called Whitton Lakes and I walked five times around the lakes, so five miles, and I raised a few thousand pounds… for my charity, for New Heights. And then the local school, Mr Hardy, the headteacher, said, “OK, we will pay a pound to every step you made”, so the local school is raising a pound for every step I made, they’re trying to raise £10,000 for me - for the charity. So last November we thought, part of the 10,000 steps appeal of school, we will sell daffodils. So
80
www.auramagazine.eu
I wanted to sell as many daffodils in November, so you will go there, where we have planted daffodils all around Conker Island. I’m looking forward… I hope I’ll still live to see the daffodils come out, over 2,000 daffodils, I think we planted. On her desire to do charity work We’ve always been a very charitable family. We were brought up by my parents to have people around all the time, hospitality, people who didn’t have homes to live in lived with us for a while. So, I grew up in that kind of environment, and then when we go to our farms, our clothes were given to our farmers, so they became part of our lives as children growing up. And when I came here I was doing the same, so some of my clients are homeless and they live with us for two to three weeks. You know, homeless individuals. (Rose: In your house?) Yeah. ( Wow). So since I had my youngest child Paolo in 2008, I think we’ve had around eight people living in our house in different years, to live with us, you know, for a while, some Filipinos, some not. They pay, some don’t, just for support and they become part of the family. The last one paid, a Filipino student visa holder, and then he just left because he got married, so they become like my children. On her husband and family support At first, you know, even Filipino husbands - who are these people? But I think because of his love for me he just entered my world and he just allowed it because it makes me happy. In my first few years at work, we wanted to help families in
AURAMAGAZINE • Issue II • May
distress so we appealed for furniture in the church - A new family has moved in the area, they don’t have wardrobes, beds, whatever. Me and my husband would go to a house, collect the furniture, deliver the furniture to another family - me and my husband, after work, after his work, after my work, and breastfeeding in-between. Honestly, he may have gotten so angry but he had no choice, he will do it for me. “Come on, we’ll do it.” “Oh, you said it’s only one wardrobe, why do I have to move this dining table, this TV, this bed?” But I think he’s just gotten used to it and he could see how it makes me happy, has made me happy through the years. Our house is a party place. You’ll go to the house in a bit, and sometimes we become guests in our own house. But people don’t have short memories, and people have… been brilliant with me. In my time of challenge, now, since 2013, they’ve been with me all throughout. They made a rota to look after me, they made a rota on who will bring the food every night. So since I got ill our dinner has been sorted most nights. A family will come with their dinner, and our dinner, so we share the dinner together, so it’s like a party every night in the house. I may have a short life, you know, my prognosis is bad - I’ve only got a few months to live, but I’ve had a good life.
On family being proud of her achievement They’re very proud because ever since I’ve been ‘Miss Volunteer’. As a growing child, when a tupperware is lost, “Miss Volunteer offered it to her friend”, sabi niya, so I’ve always been ‘Miss Volunteer’ Even my parents have been here twice. 2011 and last year. They said, “My gosh, it’s all the same, you haven’t changed, the house is always busy, you haven’t changed, your phone doesn’t stop, people ringing you for help or anything.” On being thankful for the what her parents taught her They’ve taught us kindness, they’ve taught us generosity. We were not rich and we were not poor, but I’ve always said that you don’t have to be rich to be generous, you don’t have to be healthy to smile, to offer comfort. These are little things any person can do to anyone in the community. I’d like to dedicate it to my family, my parents and my brothers, and my family here - Duncan and the children. On being terminally ill Sadness. Sadness because I love life… but I’m ready. I’m not bitter, I’m not angry, I don’t question why me, because why not me? I’m just sad because I want to do more and I won’t be able to do more because I’m limited. You know, I need oxygen now, I cannot even do steps, so that’s sadness. I’ve got children and people I love so much.. Like I said to you, I’m one of the luckiest people in this world. I’ve lived a short life…but beautiful. On Inspiring other people
(Rose: You can say that) Oh, I’m one of the luckiest people in the world. I may have a short life but I was born out of love, I grew up in love, and I’ve been given opportunities to show my love so I’m complete. I’m really one of the luckiest people in the world. www.auramagazine.eu
Always do your best. Don’t make excuses, like, “Why did you not smile?” “Oh, because I was bending down.” Don’t make excuses because they are barriers in your life. Always try. Like I said, always look at the other side, there must be something positive about this. Like me, facing death, but there must be something good about this. And my daughter just highlighted to me, “You may go but we are ready to face without you because you taught us to be brave people, to be confident in the… you know? Your love will see us through.” On the highlights of her life Childbirth. My wedding to Duncan. And my work. My work in general. (Rose: What you’ve done?) make me happy, they complete me. On Facing God I want to say thank you. Thank you for the great life. I cannot really say a moment in my life that I felt really bitter, that I’m angry about. I’m sorry for some of the things I’ve done… but that’s part of growing up, isn’t it? You make mistakes. But I cannot really say I am bitter about something that happened in my life.

Why?” asks 29-year-old social entrepreneur and Rolex laureate awardee, Reese Fernandez-Ruiz. “If Monday were a person, it would be the most bullied person. People hate Mondays, but Monday is my favorite day of the week because I’m excited about going to work.” Reese is the founder of Rags2Riches, a fashion and design house empowering community artisans in the Philippines. They are part of the fashion industry’s upcycling movement -creating beautiful hand woven bags, wallets, and rugs from materials that would have otherwise gone to waste. From things that would normally be considered worthless and useless junk, upcycling means creating something of higher value. Rags2Riches has trained over 900 female artisans from poor communities across the Philippines, lifting them out of poverty, and with its housing and savings program, the goal is to maintain them, ensuring they remain out of poverty. Whilst working as a volunteer teacher in one of the poorest urban slum communities in Manila, Reese discovered
84

hundreds of women artisans who made beautiful woven rugs from scrap fabric in their makeshift homes. Most of them were stay-at-home mothers, looking after as many as thirteen children, and were not actively looking for employment. These hardworking women were not fully benefiting from the fruits of their labor – living below the poverty line -- because they didn’t have access to the market and the suppliers. “So many people were taking advantage of the supply chain, and the women only making $0.20 per day,” Reese explains, adding that “in this case, poverty is not about being lazy but it is about a lack of access to opportunities.” Raised by a missionary mother, Reese was sensitized to poverty at an early age. Upon finishing her business undergraduate degree, Reese knew she wanted her work to be more than just a way to pay the bills. “We all have our pet peeves, and from our pet peeves, we can find what our life’s mission should be. When there’s social injustice, I feel so strongly against it.” Reese wanted to find a way to use her background AURAMAGAZINE • Issue II • May
in business for something good. “What if we can combine social value and business sense? What if we can put design in the mix? Because design is how we can add a lot of value.” And so Rags2Riches was born -- sort of. As Reese points out, “a common misconception about starting a business is that there’s an exact idea and you know what you want to do from start to end. We had the start of an idea, and it evolved along the way.” There are some indicators of the potential of your business idea. From a practical perspective, according to Reese, “cashflow is an indicator of whether the market loves you.” She emphasizes the importance of branding, establishing a relationship with your customers, and the quality of their products. “People can’t just love the story of Rags2Riches. They have to love the products as well.” This is why she has partnered with the best designers in the industry. But she also believes that receiving without any cash flow it does not necessarily mean that the business is going to fail. Sometimes, “it just means you have to tweak things a bit.” There is, however, one reliable indicator that you shouldn’t work on a business idea. “If you’re not passionate about it, forget it. If you’re not passionate about it, it’s going to fail, even if it’s a great idea.” Though she loves the work that she does, Reese is very critical of the industry that she works in. “Fashion is one of the industries that churns a lot of products. People are buying so much more than they actually need. The world is operating this way. You can get more and more and more without thinking about what your purchase does to the world. We externalize everything that doesn’t help the bottom line -- profit.” She is optimistic that eco-fashion, “gives people a different perspective on what they can be.” She urges people to think about how their actions affect www.auramagazine.eu
others and the environment. “We all live in the same world. Every decision you make will affect somebody, somewhere, someway. We need to think about more than what goes well with your jeans.” She is convinced that “thinking about the impact of your purchase can revolutionize the fashion industry. I can be pretty. I can buy beautiful things without being destructive. Beauty doesn’t have to be destructive. It shouldn’t be destructive.”
Having garnered international recognition for the work she has done, Reese feels that being an entrepreneur is a skill honed by a rare breed of individuals. “It’s not easy being an entrepreneur, and if you put ‘social’ before entrepreneur, it’s even harder.” She recalls, “there were days when things were so difficult that I just wanted to stay in bed and cry. I never did that. I always turned up to wherever I had to be, even when it was so difficult.” This is why she says she needs a very compelling ‘why’, a raison d’être. She muses “if you don’t have a compelling reason why, if it’s so easily destroyed, then at the first sign of difficulty, you’re just going to give up. My ‘why’ rather than a person, fame, or fortune, is the artisans -- not specific people, but just the thought that if you provide people with opportunities they can be better people, and it can create a better place, and having a better place is good for everyone.” This thought is what keeps Reese going, trying, dreaming, and waking up excited to go to work every Monday morning. Rags2Riches products are available in the UK market via Anthropologie, and they are looking for more partners in the Western market. So, what does your Monday look like? AURAMAGAZINE • Issue II • May

THE “BATTLE FOR GREATNESS” – MAYWEATHER vs PACQUIAO by Jessica Nock
T
he hotly anticipated Super-Fight between two Welterweight greats Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao is now looming and on May 2nd, this overdue “Battle for Greatness” will finally come to fruition. After many years of speculation, the monetary and drug testing debates have finally been put aside and the Number One vs the Number Three seed, can now battle it out in the ring. On May 2nd, the whole world will be watching as these two icons take on the greatest fight of their lives.
forced Pacquiao’s opponents to hang up their gloves and enter an early retirement. From here Pacquiao asserted his superiority in the world of boxing and the fans demanded a coveted fight against the unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Manny Pacquiao (PH) Floyd Mayweather Jr (US) Age: 36 Age: 38 Height: 5’6 Height: 5’8 Reach: 67” Reach: 72” Stance: Orthodox (Right-hand) Stance: Southpaw (Left-hand) Style: Boxer/ Swarmer/ Brawler Style: Classic Boxer Fight Record: 47 W – 0 L – 0 D Fight Record: 57 W – 5 L (3) – 2 D Wins by KO: 38 Wins by KO: 26 KO Percentage: 66% KO Percentage: 55%
For Mayweather and Pacquiao this overdue Super- Clash could have easily been a different fight, if the bout took place five years ago. However in the impressive show both athletes demonstrated in their last fights, I would even argue that there couldn’t have been a more perfect time than May the 2nd to change boxing history.
VS
Their Last Showdowns: A Closer look For these two aging boxers, it can perhaps be said that the famous sporting quote “you’re only as good as your last…” fight springs to mind. In 2009, speculation for a fight between the two pound-forpound champions first rose to the surface when Pacquiao was in the peak of his boxing career. This was after his monumental victory in an eighth round TKO; over the sixtimes world champion Oscar De La Hoya in 2008, in what can be described as a David vs Goliath match-up. Pacquiao proved to be a reckonable force as he moved up to the Welterweight division to fight the larger man. In May 2009, then came one of Pac-man’s most iconic KO’s against Briton Ricky Hatton in the second round with a powerful left hook that knocked him unconscious. These two terrific fights
94
www.auramagazine.eu
Could these past KO’s foreshadow the future on May 2nd? Could a potential Pacquiao win end Mayweather’s career and will he become the Filipino’s third victim? Or will Pacquiao become Number 48, and Floyd Mayweather Jr keeps his unbeaten record and title ‘The Best Ever’?
“Mayhem” – Mayweather vs Maidana II (September 13, 2014) Mayweather Wins - 116-111, 116-111, 115-112 Statistics by Compubox: Mayweather’s pinpoint accuracy combined with his hard to penetrate defensive style, sealed him the victory over Maidana who was left swinging punches to no avail. fighter can match the Filipino’s untiring work-rate and his stamina is incontestable. Southpaw vs Orthodox: Pacquiao’s left is far more powerful than Floyd’s right, but Mayweather is statistically the most accurate puncher in boxing according to Compubox. This will cause the Pac-man to rely on his feint dodges and awkward angles more than ever to perfectly time where Mayweather’s head will be, to pummel him with a harsh blow.
Pacquiao Wins - 119-103,119-103,120-102 Statistics by Compubox:
The Jab: Pacquiao’s jab is the more authoritative of the two fighters, and this punch works a way of maximising his naturally smaller range, as he lunges forward to throw the quick power jab after he goes in with his strong left.
Winning by one of the widest decisions in the history of boxing, Pacquiao put his 2012 KO behind him defending his WBO World Welterweight Championship against the unbeaten American Chris Algieri. His dominating aggressiveness proved him to be a cut above his opponent. His high work-rate was pivotal to this fight and a characteristic Floyd needs to worry about on May 2nd, if he wants to maintain his reign. Pacquiao Total punches : 669 | Connected: 229 | 34% Power shots: 410 | Connected: 187 | 46% Algieri Total punches: 469 | Connected: 108 | 23% Power shots: 212 | Connected: 80 | 38% ** Pacquiao also had a blinding 9th round landing 72% of his Power punches 43/60. Although Mayweather has higher accuracy than Pacquiao, Manny threw more than twice the amount of punches that Floyd did. This is certainly going to give the unbeaten “prettyboy” a tough time in the ring, because no other
Offensive Aggression: Since his knockout to Juan Manuel Marquez in 2012, Pacquiao has become a “smarter boxer,” too much aggression can be a downfall if the KO is what consumes the mind and takes you away from real boxing. As Mayweather is likely to maintain a defensive stance, he is likely to dodge in an attempt to make Pacquiao miss punches. If this is the case, Pacquiao needs to keep feinting rather than being reckless and impatient, which has been witnessed in previous fights. High Work-rate: It can be argued that Pacquiao employs one of the highest activity rates and obliterating pressure in the ring. This heavily contrasts to Mayweather’s effective passive and defensive movement, which is the key to his unblemished career. The question is on the night who’s style will prove to be the most effective against one another? May the 2nd – the Showdown of the Century between two fierce rivals. This is a battle for living legacy, for the winner will cement themselves as one of the greatest of “all time.”

GB Taekwondo Kids Kicking their Way to Gold across the Globe by Jessica Nock
S
hayanne and Zack Sarsoza are two incredibly young British born Filipinos, at the age of 13 and 10 who have represented Team GB at cadet level in Taekwondo. Simultaneously achieving the title of British National Champions together in 2012, the rising A- Class athletes have been travelling across the world to countries such as the U.S, Serbia, Croatia, Turkey, Sweden, Korea – just to name a few, to cement themselves as winning contenders and future hopefuls for the Olympic GB squad. For this talented pair, the possibilities in the sport are endless, with an open invitation to train with the Philippine National Taekwondo squad, when they are back home. For these dedicated and ambitious youngsters, following in the footsteps of fellow GB athlete Jade Jones, they are setting their sights on fulfilling their dreams of becoming Olympians in Tokyo 2020.
The Kixstar King Trained by their father and Kixstar Dragons creator Saimoore Sarsoza (4th Dan), he has been practicing Taekwondo for 22 years. Sarsoza is an inspiring yet tough individual whom has trained many elite performers in Taekwondo from a multiple of Nations, including a Filipino from New Zealand, in preparation for the U.S Open. At his club Kixstar Dragons he coaches twelve elite athletes, 5-6 times a week and in the cadet camp including Shayanne, he has five students whom represent GBR.

He trains student’s everyday, comprising of individuals with a range of abilities and of different age groups. Giving advice to other Filipino parents, whom their children are heavily active in sport Sarsoza says, “Let your kids enjoy it – you never know where it is leading, it keeps them busy and it means they wont be locked up inside playing on their Xbox.” Acknowledging that sometimes children may lack motivation or the willingness to be pushed he says, “just encourage them’ sometimes you really need to push them a little bit until they reach their abilities and then let them progress naturally, let them enjoy it.”

Shayanne has been practicing Taekwondo for seven years, and at thirteen years of age, she shows maturity well beyond her years. To stay ahead of the competition, she trains six times a week, with sessions up to two hours long and does her homework in the evenings. A defining moment for her, was when she won her first International Gold medal in Serbia, at just eleven years old. One day, Shayanne dreams of becoming an Olympic medallist, although her main aspiration is to become a doctor one day. Shayanne is even actively looking at Universities across the world, to find an institution where her studies and her love for the sport can come to fruition.
sustained in Turkey where she won a bronze medal last year. Shayanne has come back stronger and fought immensely to win two Gold medals in the US Open in Orlando and the Dutch Open in Eidenhoven. If she continues to dominate her fights and defeat her sought after opponents, there is a chance for her to be selected to compete again for Team GB, at the European Championships in France and the World Championships in Korea later this year.
The Golden Boy The younger sibling Zack Sarsoza is experiencing a medal rush being a 9 times Gold medallist in 2014, in both Open International and National competitions. In his last major competition, he was the reigning British Champion; victorious in the hotly anticipated annual event, for the second time in Manchester, against many competitive rivals. In Zack’s case it is clear that consistency is key. After his victory in the Swedish Open, Zack is eyeing up another win at the Berlin Open in May to increase his clean winning streak and to defend his title at the British Nationals in September this year. From a young age it is obvious that Zack has a love for competing and an urge to win over his rivals, even those much bigger than him. He says “before I get into the ring I get scared, but when I’m actually fighting I’m not scared anymore.” As every normal ten-year-old boy, he loves playing Minecraft and wants to be a video game designer when he grows up. An avid Chelsea fan, Zack also enjoys playing football in school. Due to his strict Taekwondo training, his stamina is superior over other boys so he likes to compete in athletics in long-distance running events. Shayanne and Zack have already worked tremendously hard for their success and achievements in Taekwondo. However the exceeding costs of travel expenses, which are currently being covered by their parents, though with a lack of scholarships available in the martial arts it is becoming more difficult. If you are inspired by their story and are a person or business willing to sponsor these two athletes, they would be very greatful. Please help them on their journey to Tokyo!
In Baku Azerbajan, Shayanne competed for GBR at the first ever World Cadet Championships. Although she didn’t medal, placing in the top 8 is an incredible feat for such a disciplined young girl. Shayanne was also called up to represent England at the Commonwealth Games, where she took home a well-deserved silver medal, in a weight category higher than she normally fights in. Since then 2015 is proving to be her year to shine, coming back from an injury she www.auramagazine.eu

On behalf of Sports Vision, Palou says, “We expect the games to have better coverage as far as airtime is concerned and we’re very happy with the relationship. We’re looking forward to a longer-term relationship.” GMA News TV has been the league’s official television partner since 2013, while GMA International has been airing select matches through the Network’s international channels since 2011. Locally, matches will be shown on GMA News TV Channel 11 from Monday to Thursday at 1:00 PM, and from Saturday to Sunday at 12:45 PM, after Balitanghali Weekend. All Sunday matches will be aired live while the matches from Monday to Saturday will be shown on a delayed telecast basis.
