Complex Crystals The Great Salt Plains State Park is an 840-acre Oklahoma state park located in Alfalfa County, Oklahoma that attracts visitors because of the formation of hourglass-shaped selenite crystals. When designing, the focus was to have a building that would be both functional and symbolic for the town of Jet, Oklahoma. Looking at a salt crystal microscopically, complexity is characterized. Layers stacked on each other create repetition and a grid is created as the crystal is formed. The formation of a pyramidal shape portrays hierarchy and depth. The design turns to nature as its inspiration. Crystals are often seen as clear; however, the selenite crystals hourglass-shape is formed with wet soil, sand and clay particles within it. The design of the building takes the same idea by using the grid and then placing random boxes, the spaces, inside the gridded columns. A grid of columns rises from the ground and creates the complexity seen in the salt crystals. In total, there are 4 levels for visitors to explore and immerse themselves in the structure. The building’s dense grid of columns frames the views of the salt plains. It reaches a total of 78 feet and rises from the ground, similar to the formation of the salt crystals. The building’s circulation takes you through the structural columns. Each space allows visitors to interact hands on with the building by placing the columns around and through the walkways. Stacking the program requirements on top of one another creates the hierarchy and allows distinct areas for different needs so visitors and users of the building feel connected with nature itself.
The design is meant to create an experience for the visitors of the Great Salt Plains. The dense amount of columns combined with the spatial separation of each floor creates an attraction that invites people to
Concept
Different heights were created to suit the function of the interiors . Certain areas within the house offer obstructed views that provide intimacy and refuge. Comfort and risk compose the space. A languange between bright and dark. Varying levels of communication. Light becomes the conversation. A dialog between light.

Placed between Whitehand Hall and the Meatball House, Site 1 gives pedestrians access to Harold’s Square, which is surrounded by local shops and restaurants. The main goal when designing for this area was to help define the space and its ability to be used by the community. The idea behind the topography started with the concept of layers. This would help to create the illusion of levels. As ideas shifted, the concept evolved to focusing on the city grid. As humans, we are psychologically use to moving forward and progressing. The idea behind the design was to work with movement. The topography focuses on a horizontal motion that pulls in pedestrians
