The story of Little Red Riding Hood is a LIE. It never happened. There is no evidence nor is it physically possible for a wolf to put on a grandmother’s bonnet. Hansel and Gretel is a lie too and don’t even get me started on Jack and the Beanstalk. They have, however, seeped into diverse cultures around the world. They are universally taught to children who go on to perform them in backyard pageants. Storytellers propagate these lies as profound truths. Every story has a teller and a listener. The first teller may have told a completely truthful story, but then the listener became the storyteller. He changed some details just a bit to suit his purpose or to better serve his listener. Then that person became the storyteller and so on. Some stories persist and change with the culture because they are profound or universal truths or because they provide warning of a continuing threat. They have morals that explain who we are, where we came from, where our society is going and often what terrible thing will happen if we stray. And we retell them to bond us further to the community; to
acknowledge our shared hopes and fears. Generally we do not fear wolves but we still feel lingering fear and guilt about leaving our dear granny alone. Each story we’re telling this season began a long time ago in a very different context. Big Fish and Red Ranger Came Calling both begin with, “let me tell you a story I heard…” . Once on This Island is a retelling of The Little Mermaid story and She Kills Monsters shows us the beginnings of interactive storytelling and the addition of ‘the player’ to the teller/listener dynamic. In every case we will sit down together to listen. We will trust the storyteller to speak the truth and forgive their obvious lies and embellishments. We will go to faraway places, witness magical transformations, and battle mythical dragons and ultimately feel closer to the people around us. We will feel our similarities more strongly. And we will retell these stories the day after with our own embellishments. Please come to the Fox and listen to our storytellers. ~Charles Packard Executive Producer

Guys like Bobby Flay usually get all the glory in the world of haute cuisine, but what about the poor saps behind the scenes like Sam Peliczowski — an out-of-work actor who mans the phones for a swanky 5-star NY restaurant? From his basement “office”, he gets to deal with a slew of desperate callers (socialites, glitterati, pushy tourists, whiny senior citizens and the occasional Mafioso) who will stop at nothing to land a prime reservation. The twist? — a single actor plays poor put-upon Sam callers
AND his non-stop parade of

Beets
(in the Studio Theatre)

An historical-fiction play that reveals a little known chapter in America’s history — inspired by actual events. At the height of WWII, Berthoud, Colorado’s industrious sugar beet farmers were expecting a record harvest, but labor was in short supply – with most of the town’s young men overseas fighting Germans. Who could help them harvest their beets? Germans. There were 3,000 German POWs being held at Camp 202 in Greeley, CO. Why not put them to work?
Beets is a poignant story of bias yielding to circumstance, hatred bowing to compassion and love escaping fences. (not included in the basic season package)

Sideways Stories from Wayside School
July 8-24, 2014 Daytime performances, Mon-Sat. See our website for details
A play that celebrates creativity, adventure and the curiosity of youth Adaptation by John Olive
There was a bit of an error made in the construction of Wayside School. Instead of thirty classrooms side by side, it was built one classroom on top of another, thirty stories high…except for the 19th floor which seems to have been forgotten. And way up top, the children in Mrs. Jewls’s class have some strange encounters with a possessed blackboard, a lunch-money-stealing principal, ghosts in the mashed potatoes, talking pigtails, dead rats, and the mysterious Miss Zarves.

Get Involved Read and Rant We meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 7-10pm to discuss 2 or 3 scripts. The only requirements to become a member are that you attend the meetings and that you do not discuss the scripts you read with anyone outside of the group meeting. Just like Vegas, our motto is “What happens in Read and Rant, stays in Read and Rant!” Scripts that we are excited about and that might be a good fit for Fox audiences make it into our Staged Reading Series. From there, we decide if it’s something the Fox should produce in an upcoming season. Read and Rant scripts that have been produced include Wooden Snowflakes and Consider the Oyster, as well as this season's production of Beets. Interested? Contact Angela Astle at aastle@aurorafoxartscenter.org.
Ushering Our volunteer ushers provide invaluable services by assisting patrons to their seats, answering questions, and most importantly, creating a pleasant and welcoming environment. As a volunteer, you will have an opportunity to meet many new and exciting people as well as having the opportunity to see quality performances for free. If you are interested in being an usher, please contact The Box Office at foxbox@auroragov.org.
