THE BARBED-WIRE UNIVERSITY The Social Life of the WW2 Prisoner-of-War Camp Midge Gillies The conventional picture of Allied POWs in the World War II prisoner-of-war camps tends to be restricted to escape attempts (Colditz and The Great Escape) or terrible brutality (the Far Eastern camps and Bridge on the River Kwai). But what did the men really do all day? In fact, British prisoners showed the most amazing ingenuity and determination to turn their camp into a hive of every kind of activity. Whole golf courses were laid out in the exercise yard; many postwar theatre names began their careers in extravagant drag as the stars of prisoner productions; and days spent watching birds beyond the perimeter fence became definitive monographs on avian behaviour. Midge Gillies’ extensive research and interviews have produced a remarkable work of social history which will genuinely redefine our picture of the camps and leave us with renewed admiration for the initiative, creativity and fortitude of men in wartime captivity. Midge Gillies is the author of a biography of Amy Johnson and Waiting for Hitler, about Britain on the brink of war. She lives in Ely, Cambridgeshire.

THE SPADE IS MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD The Story of the Wartime Dig for Victory Campaign Daniel Smith After the introduction of food rationing in 1940, and when German U-boats targeting merchant shipping threatened the availability of essential foodstuffs, the Ministry of Agriculture decided something had to be done to make the kitchens of Britain more self-sufficient. The result was one of Britain’s most successful propaganda campaigns – Dig for Victory – encouraging every man and woman to turn their garden, or even the grass verge in their street, over to cultivating vegetables. Now, for the first time, Daniel Smith tells the full story of this remarkable wartime episode when spades, forks and bean canes became weapons the ordinary citizen could take up against the enemy. It’s a war story without fighting or killing, one that shows how even The Little Man with the Spade, in the words of the government at the time, did his bit for Victory. Daniel Smith is author of the Sherlock Holmes Companion, also published by Aurum, and The Lucky Bugger’s Casebook.

BEACON FOR CHANGE How the 1951 Festival of Britain Shaped the Modern Age Barry Turner As the 2012 Olympics sets about remaking a whole swathe of east London, Barry Turner’s book marks the 60th anniversary of the Festival of Britain, which did the very same for London’s South Bank after the war. In 1951, the Festival sought not only to celebrate the best of Britishness but also to set new standards and paradigms for modern design, aesthetics and architecture. With satellite festivals all over Britain, it attracted 8 million visitors in a single year. The Royal Festival Hall, the Dome of Discovery (then the largest unsupported roof in the world), and the long-lamented Skylon (a futuristic aluminium pylon) were all built when the South Bank was cleared of its industry and Victorian buildings. As well as nostalgic appeal the story constitutes a kind of sequel to David Kynaston’s Austerity Britain, as the Festival gave the British people permission to enjoy themselves and look forward at last to a future of modernity and prosperity. Barry Turner is also the author of Aurum’s Outpost of Occupation, about the wartime occupation of the Channel Islands.

SCORCHED EARTH, BLACK SNOW The First Year of the Korean War Andrew Salmon Scorched Earth, Black Snow is the second major work on the Korean War by the author of To the Last Round, his acclaimed history of the battle of Imjin River. The first year of the Korean War was a tumultuous series of epic battles, ending in a legendary and harrowing retreat. In the summer of 1950, British and Australian troops were dispatched to fight alongside UN forces in the savage struggle against communism in Korea. After a spectacular run of battles, victory beckoned. But when China launched a shock counter-offensive, British soldiers endured a lacerating 200mile ‘bug out’ to escape. Across the peninsula in ‘Hellfire Valley’, in conditions colder than Stalingrad, British and Australian troops together with US Marines faced the most nightmarish battle of some fifty years at Chosin Reservoir. They avoided annihilation by a hair’s breadth. Featuring dozens of new interviews with veterans, this is the untold story of the most desperate days of that ‘forgotten’ war – in the words of the men who came home. Andrew Salmon is a Seoul-based journalist for The Times, the South China Morning Post and Forbes. To the Last Round, also published by Aurum, won the Hampshire Libraries Military History Prize.

THE HOUSE OF REDGRAVE The Secret Lives of a Theatrical Dynasty Tim Adler From the landmark films of Tony Richardson to the untimely death of Natasha Richardson – this is the saga of one of the greatest dynasties in British film and theatre, and the first full biography of a remarkable family. Their story – in this book beginning with the birth of Vanessa Redgrave and ending with the sudden tragic death in a skiing accident of her daughter Natasha – is compulsive reading throughout. From the tangled private life of Tony Richardson, Natasha’s father, who directed major films like Joseph Andrews, to Vanessa and Corin’s complicated involvement with the Workers’ Revolutionary Party, to the emergence of yet another generation of fine actors with Natasha and Joely, there is truly never a dull moment. Scandal, melodrama, tragedy, intrigue and the highest artistic achievement colour the tale of this remarkable dynasty, whose contribution to British drama and film has been immense. Tim Adler is also the author of Hollywood and the Mob. He lives in London.

WHO’S THAT GIRL? The Autobiography of Elisabeth Sladen Elisabeth Sladen When Elisabeth Sladen debuted as journalist Sarah Jane Smith in the Doctor Who story ‘The Time Warrior’, she had no idea the character would become one of the most enduring and popular in the series’ history. The coming years would see Elisabeth traverse time and space alongside classic doctors Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker, whilst a generation of children crouched behind the sofa, terrified but transfixed as their tea-time heroine found herself menaced by Daleks, dinosaurs, Cybermen, Sontarans, Egyptian mummies and even the Loch Ness Monster. Her decision to quit the TARDIS made front-page news, but it wasn’t the end of Sarah Jane. Elisabeth has reprised the role many times, toured the weird, wonderful world of Doctor Who fandom and regularly tops polls of fans’ favourite companions. Now Elisabeth Sladen tells the story of her remarkable career: a unique, insider’s view of the world’s longest-running science fiction series; and of British television yesterday and today. Elisabeth Sladen plays companion Sarah Jane Smith in Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures. She has also appeared in Coronation Street, Some Mothers Do ’Ave ’Em and Z-Cars.

THE MAN WHO INVENTED THE DALEKS The Strange Worlds of Terry Nation Alwyn W. Turner ‘Turner may be an anorak, but he is an acutely intelligent anorak’ Francis Wheen

Terry Nation was one of the most successful and prolific writers for television and radio that Britain ever produced. His vision of a post-apocalyptic England, Survivors, has been re-made thirty years on, Blake’s 7 endures as a cult sci-fi classic, and his most famous creations, the Daleks, ensured, and at times eclipsed, the success of Doctor Who. But while those alien ‘pepperpots’ remain at the core of his appeal, Nation also had a role to play in the early days of radio and television comedy – as part of the legendary Associated London Scripts, he wrote for Spike Milligan, Tony Hancock and Frankie Howerd – and he became a key figure in the internationally successful adventure series of the 1960s: The Avengers, The Saint and The Persuaders! This is the first serious, mainstream account of Terry Nation’s life and contribution to British television and will shed light on a fascinating melting pot of ambitious young writers, producers and performers without whom British culture today would look very different.

Alwyn W. Turner is the author of Crisis? What Crisis?: Britain in the 1970s, Rejoice! Rejoice!: Britain in the 1980s, and The Biba Experience.

SUBDUED MAGIC A Life of Raymond Chandler Tom Williams

To describe a book as Chandleresque is instantly to conjure a particular world. A world of violence; of mean streets trodden by lonely, hard-drinking private detectives; of shady bars inhabited by dangerous femmes fatales – women with the kind of bodies that would make a bishop kick out a stained glass window. It is the world left to us by Raymond Chandler – the writer who, more than any other, defined modern fiction. Now, comes a major new biography of one of the twentieth century’s most popular, influential and enduring literary figures. Beautifully written and featuring a wealth of original research, Tom Williams’ fascinating book covers Chandler’s isolated upbringing, his little-known war record, growing problems with alcoholism, troubled relationships with women and the origins of the prose, the characters, the plots and the haunting noirish world that transformed popular culture for ever. Tom Williams is a writer and journalist living in north London. He has previously written for the Observer and the Spectator, and is a protégé of John Sutherland whose shared passion for Chandler, and abandoned biography of the novelist, inspired Tom to embark on this book.

Architecture

ENGLAND’S LOST HOUSES from the Archives of Country Life Giles Worsley Of all the photographs in Country Life’s extensive archive, none are more haunting than the images of houses that no longer exist. For the first time, these stunning photographs have been gathered together to provide a powerful impression of the richness and variety of the lost English country house. The buildings are surprisingly eclectic but uniformly gorgeous, from the Restoration gem Uffington House to the Rococo magnificence of Nuthall Temple. This is more than just a eulogy to lost treasures; it is also a study and an explanation of the historical contexts that led to the loss of these paragons of England’s architectural heritage. The story of the English country house becomes increasingly fascinating over the past hundred years. From their wanton destruction, through the realisation and appreciation of their cultural value, to the protected status they enjoy today. England’s Lost Houses will be essential reading for all those who wish to see a clear picture of the past. Giles Worsley, who died in 2006, was the architecture correspondent of the Daily Telegraph, architectural editor of Country Life and editor of Perspectives on Architecture.

Gardening

GERTRUDE JEKYLL AND THE COUNTRY HOUSE GARDEN Judith Tankard Gertrude Jekyll was one of the most important garden designers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A prolific writer, she had a special relationship with Country Life through her books, articles and gardens designed in collaboration with Sir Edwin Lutyens. She also designed four gardens for the founder and proprietor of the magazine, Edward Hudson. As a result, the Country Life archive has an unrivalled record of her work. This volume celebrates Jekyll’s impact on garden design through her own work and her collaborations with Lutyens and other Arts and Crafts architects such as Harold Peto, William Robinson, Oswald Milne and Inigo Triggs. Beautifully illustrated throughout, it contains rarely seen images of Jekyll’s work, including 1912 autochromes of her own garden at Munstead Wood. Judith B. Tankard is a well-known landscape historian, author and preservation consultant. She is the author or co-author of seven books on landscape history, including most recently Beatrix Farrand: Private Gardens, Public Landscapes and Gardens of the Arts and Crafts Movement.

THE SPORT OF KINGS, QUEENS AND FOUR-LEGGED ATHLETES The

Book of Horse Racing

Edited by Martin Smith It is the Sport of Kings. And Queens. And Lords and their Ladies. It is also the sport of knaves, bounders and cheats. Moreover it’s the sport of the ordinary man: from housewives with their 50p to bet on whichever horse Frankie Dettori is riding in the Derby, to anyone who has entered the office Grand National sweepstake. Horse racing is a massive commercial industry with a multi-million pound turnover in betting, breeding and prize-money. But it is also a fun day out, whether it be the splendour of Royal Ascot, Epsom dolled up for the Derby, Cheltenham rocking to the Irish enjoying the craic, or the homeliness of the most humble country course. The Sport of Kings, Queens and Four-legged Athletes relives racing’s greatest moments through the passion and authority of the sports pages’ true thoroughbreds: John Oaksey, Brough Scott, J.A. McGrath, Marcus Armytage, Peter Scott, Paul Hayward, the anonymous Hotspurs and Marlboroughs, as well as jockeys Peter Scudamore, Frankie Dettori, Johnny Murtagh, Tony McCoy and Lester Piggott offering their own particular view from the saddle. Martin Smith was Assistant Sports Editor of The Daily Telegraph for many years.

Sir – I could not help a smile when I read an article in the sports page by your expert analyst Simon Hughes (May 15). He wrote: ‘If you look at footage of prewar Test cricket, most batsmen lingered on the back foot dabbing and nurdling the ball against wily trundlers on pitches barely discernible from the outfield. The sun never shone [how did he know?] ‘This strip [for England's match against Sri Lanka at Lord's earlier this month] is firm and trustworthy and only tinged with green, but some of the old dobbers – a Shackleton or a Bedser – might have utilised the conditions well.’ I would point out to Simon Hughes that one of those old ‘dobbers’ did go to Australia in 1950–51 and took 30 wickets at 16.06 in five Tests – there were no green tinges of green grass there. In the next series the old ‘dobber’, also against Australia in five Test matches, did take 39 wickets at 17.00 each. A matter of 69 wickets in 10 consecutive games v Australia at less than 17.00 each. From 1950 to 1953 this old ‘dobber’ did take 121 Test wickets in 21 Tests at 18.16 each. Not bad for an old ‘dobber’. Perhaps we might find another one somewhere. The sun did shine in those days, despite Simon Hughes' comment. I don't suppose your analyst saw the ‘dobber’ bowl – he's not old enough to have done so. Alec Bedser, Woking, Surrey

STANDING MY GROUND The Autobiography of Matthew Hayden Matthew Hayden Matthew Hayden is one of the finest players in Australia’s all-conquering Test cricket side of the last decade, and this is his outspoken and revealing life story. He was part of the team that narrowly lost the enthralling 2005 Ashes series in England, and then trounced England 5-0 back in Australia a year later. And while much of the side’s success was due to Glenn McGrath’s seam-bowling and Shane Warne’s spin, Hayden’s opening partnerships with the equally flinty Justin Langer laid the bedrock of their many victories. His autobiography features never-before-told inside stories of many famous cricketing series, including revelations about disunity and dysfunction within the Australian camp during the 2005 series. It also offers fascinating first-hand testimony of what it was like to play against greats of the game like Vivian Richards, and to face the fearsome West Indies fast-bowling attack. Standing My Ground is also a casebook in the psychology of winning and doing your best: no sportsmen in the modern era have been better at this than Ricky Ponting’s Australian Test side.

FROM LAST TO FIRST How Bottom-of-the-Class Became a World Class Marathon Runner Charlie Spedding ‘An inspirational tale, brilliantly told’ Independent

Charlie Spedding describes himself as ‘not particularly talented’ – at least, compared to the group of people he had chosen to find himself among: the athletes in the Olympic marathon. So how did he end up with a bronze medal? How did he win the London Marathon? And why does he still hold the English record for the distance? As well as the enthralling life story of one of our finest distance runners, this book is a wonderfully clear and inspiring piece of life coaching for anyone who wants to make the most of their talents. As Spedding says at the start, ‘I believe that on occasions you can create the circumstances in which you can perform at a higher level than your talent says you can’. Spedding’s own story, and his chronicle of the big races he excelled in, proves it’s true.

Charlie Spedding is the English record holder for the marathon, a winner of the London Marathon, and the last British athlete to win an Olympic medal in the marathon.

CHRIS BRASHER The Authorised Biography John Bryant One of the most remarkable – and controversial – figures in British sporting history, Chris Brasher piled unique achievement on unique achievement. Together with Chris Chataway he paced Roger Bannister to break the 4-minute mile and in 1956 won Olympic Gold in the steeplechase. He founded the now-iconic London Marathon and pioneered the modern sports of fell-walking and orienteering. At the Observer, he effectively invented modern sports feature writing, and as if all that wasn’t enough, he created the now-ubiquitous Brasher walking boot, which made once-heavy hiking boots as comfortable as training shoes. But Brasher was also irascible and domineering – a good friend but a bad enemy – and a man who had to win in everything he did. Now, John Bryant, who was a close friend of Brasher, has written the extraordinary story of this impossible and amazing man’s life. John Bryant was formerly editor of the Daily Telegraph, and is the author of books on the London Marathon and the 4-minute mile. He lives in London.

THE CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL A Centenary History Robin Oakley The Cheltenham Festival is nowadays the biggest event in the racing year, eclipsing Royal Ascot, the Grand National or the Derby in visitor numbers. 2011 marks a hundred years since the 1911 running of the National Hunt Chase and the birth of the Festival, providing the perfect occasion for Robin Oakley’s new history. Cheltenham is a work of both history and celebration – telling the story of how several March days of jump racing beneath Cleeve Hill became a vast sporting event attracting an average of 50,000 spectators per day. It is a story of legendary horses such as Arkle, Desert Orchid and Best Mate; of the craic and of the characters – like the Irishman who won enough on Istabraq to pay off his mortgage, lost it again on the Champion Chase, and reflected, ‘Ach, it was only a small house anyway …’ Robin Oakley’s book is a must-have for both the committed Festival-goer and the armchair racing fan.

Robin Oakley is Racing Correspondent of the Spectator and Europe Correspondent for CNN. He was formerly the BBC’s Political Editor.

FERGIE TIME The Wit & Wisdom of Sir Alex Ferguson Compiled by Daniel Taylor On Dennis Wise: ‘He could start a row in an empty house.’ On referees: ‘Everyone knows that for us to get awarded a penalty we need a certificate from the Pope and a personal letter from the Queen.’

He is simultaneously the most admired and feared manager in British football. In his twenty-four years at Manchester United, and forty-six in professional football, he’s torn up the record books, amassed a treasure trove of silverware, and unleashed the hairdryer on countless players, rival managers, referees and journalists. But amidst the sound, the fury and the mind games lurks one of sport’s greatest wits. So here we present Sir Alex Ferguson – in his own words.

Daniel Taylor is a football writer and has been the Guardian’s man in Manchester since 2000. His last book was This is the One: Sir Alex Ferguson – The Uncut Story of a Football Genius, also published by Aurum.

THE FINEST WINES OF CALIFORNIA Stephen Brook MW Foreword by Hugh Johnson OBE The fourth in Aurum’s award-winning Finest Wines series is the definitive new guide to the world’s largest and most misunderstood wine region. The wines of California each have a unique personality and style, which arises from a culture very different from that of most other wine regions. Whilst the area has abundant sunshine, the distinctive character of the wines comes from other elements, mainly the maritime influence or the elevation of the vineyards. Californian wines also benefit from the industry’s lack of regulation which allows a grower to grow what he wants where he wants, and use any grapes that he likes. This freedom has led to the swift evolution and diversification of the industry there. Stephen Brook has identified California’s top 90 producers and the book features a lavish illustrated profile for each. Authoritative, bang up-to-date, and full of fascinating facts, this essential guide is required reading for all wine lovers and makes a handsome present. Stephen Brook MW is the recipient of numerous awards for his wine writing, including the André Simon, Glenfiddich, Lanson and Veuve Clicquot.

MILE BY MILE ON BRITAIN’S RAILWAYS The LNER, LMS, GWR and Southern Railway in 1947 S.N. Pike Back in 1947 someone called S.N. Pike – we know next to nothing about him – published three little pamphlets, each mapping in forensic detail one of Britain’s mainline rail routes. Now Aurum reissues all three in one handsome volume – adding a fourth in the same style (Pike never got around to the GWR) to complete the set. The books are full of period interest – the East Coast line, for example, still goes past Alexandra Park racecourse, sees a tangle of colliery sidings all the way up through Yorkshire, and passes 20 places where ‘GPO mailbag catching nets are erected close to the rails’. When today’s high-speed trains swish to Paris so fast that the landscape beyond is a blur, this delightful book reminds us of what once could be seen at leisure on a long railway journey.

THE VW CAMPER VAN A Biography Mike Harding Invented in the aftermath of World War Two in a German military vehicle factory, the Volkswagen Camper van has escaped its military origins to become the embodiment of freedom and the open road, adored by hippies the world over. It’s also the first choice for couples and families seeking a cheap camping holiday with wheels attached. So never mind the oddly off-centre steering wheel or the vagaries of the air-cooled rear engine: the VW Camper van has become more than a vehicle – it has truly become a way of life. Mike Harding’s first ride in a Volkswagen Camper van was back in 1961. Finally, in 2009, he could wait no longer, and bought his own. Combining the endless curiosity of the author of eight monographs on church architecture, and the hilarious sense of humour of one of Britain’s best stand-up comics, this biography is a wonderful social history of the postwar years through the prism of a single transport icon. Mike Harding presents a weekly show on folk music on BBC Radio 2. His other books for Aurum are his Little Books on church iconography and A Guide to Tying North Country Flies.

CREATIVE BLACK & WHITE PRINTING A Comprehensive, User-friendly Guide to Successful Monochrome Printing Paul Gallagher and Mike McNamee Anyone who is serious about photography will care about the quality of the prints they produce, whether they are for exhibition in a gallery or for hanging on the walls of their home. Subjects covered include image capture (digital and film), processing digital files, scanning film negatives, converting files to monochrome, image preparation and refinement, choosing a printer, inks and papers, profiling and presentation. All of the techniques are clearly explained and there are numerous examples of printed images, accompanied by screenshots showing the controls and adjustments employed in making them. Paul Gallagher has been a fine-art black & white photographer for over twenty years. He is Epson’s leading black & white printer and has extensive experience of teaching and running workshops. Mike McNamee has taught photography and digital imaging for over ten years.

SHADOWPLAYERS The Rise and Fall of Factory Records James Nice June 2011

Introduction by Jon Savage

Music World English Language 560pp

Definitive and comprehensive, this is the actual story of Factory Records’ Peter Saville

206 x 153mm Paperback £14.99 978 1 84513 634 5 US: Aurum Translation: Aitken Alexander Associates Agent/Serial: Aitken Alexander Associates/ Aurum

In 1978, a ‘Factory for Sale’ sign gave Alan Erasmus and Tony Wilson a name for their fledgling Manchester club night. Though they couldn’t have known it at the time, this was the launch of one of the most significant musical and cultural legacies of the late twentieth century. The club’s live scene soon translated to vinyl, and Factory Records went on to become the most innovative and celebrated record label of the next thirty years. Shadowplayers is the most complete and authoritative account of how a group of provincial anarchists and entrepreneurs created the most influential record label of modern times. James Nice is an author, journalist and record-label owner. He once worked for Factory Benelux and now administers much of the former Factory catalogue.

‘Loved Alwyn Turner’s Rejoice! Rejoice! [it] not only re-creates the weird world of the Falklands war, the miners strike, alternative comedy and the Filofax, but finds room for Mike Gatting, Zola Budd and To The Manor Born’ New Statesman

Paperback £14.99 978 1 84513 621 5 US: Aurum Translation: Aurum

This is the first full-length, in-depth history of this most fascinating of decades. If the Seventies were the last gasp of the old Britain, the Eighties were a truly transitional, politically revolutionary decade, when Thatcherism remade Britain’s economy and its society, but when Britain’s social fabric also changed in many infinitely more encouraging ways, such as the response to famine in Ethiopia, Live Aid and gay rights. Witty, formidably well-informed on political intrigue as well as every last soap opera and rock album, this is a piece of genuinely new history. Alwyn Turner is the author of Crisis? What Crisis?: Britain in the 1970s and Cult Rock Posters, both published by Aurum, as well as The Biba Experience. He lives in London.
