Installing Ubuntu
• Select your language on the left side of the screen. • To try Ubuntu without modifying any settings and to test your computer for compatibility issues, click on Try Ubuntu . • To install Ubuntu, you must click on Install Ubuntu on the right side of the dialog box.
› Reasons to try Ubuntu: • Decide whether using Ubuntu is right for you. • Find compatibility issues with hardware that need to be addressed. › Reasons to install Ubuntu: • Improve the speed of your computer. • Use Ubuntu permanently.
Install Ubuntu Installation Preparation
› To install Ubuntu, you must have at least 6 GB of hard drive space. • Checking Download updates while installing will enable you to have a fully updated operating system after the installation, however it will increase your installation time.
• Checking Install this third-party software will install an MP3 codec onto your computer. The MP3 codec is proprietary software and not opensource. • Click on Continue to install Ubuntu.
Installing Ubuntu Installation Type
• If you are installing Ubuntu onto a blank hard drive, selecting Erase disk and install Ubuntu will be the easiest and best choice for you, unless you are installing a custom configuration. • For everyone else, Something else is a more logical choice.
› If you have Windows, another version of Ubuntu, or another operating system installed already, there will be more choices listed. › You can choose to keep Windows and install Ubuntu alongside or you can erase Windows.
› You can also choose to keep an earlier version of Ubuntu or replace it with the latest version.
Installing Ubuntu Partitions
› If you have selected Something else , you will arrive at this screen. This is a blank 1 0 GB hard drive. • You must have a large partition that is at least 6 GB to mount the root partition notated with / under mount point. › The root partition is used to store all of your system files and most likely your files as well unless you have a
configuration that deviates from this one. • You must also have a sizable partition for swap. › If you run out of RAM, swap uses the hard drive to store temporary data. This is not a replacement for adding RAM as your computer will be crippling slow, but is used as the last resort instead of data loss.
Installing Ubuntu Partitions
• If you selected + , located where the cursor was on the previous screen, a dialog box will appear allowing you to create more partitions. › Size : allows you to adjust the size of the partition. › Type for the new partition : Primary: There can only be two
primary partitions one one drive. A primary partition must be used for root. Logical: There can be any number of logical partitions, however you cannot use a logical partition to boot. › Location for the new partition : Beginning of this space : The new partition will
be created at the beginning of the drive. End of this space : The new partition will be created at the end of the data on the drive. › Use as : Determines the file format of the new partition. › Mount point: Selects which folder will be mounted.
Installing Ubuntu Location
• Select your location in the world. • Click Continue to proceed in the installation process. › This dialog determines the clock and default location settings to use for your computer.
Installing Ubuntu Keyboard Layout
• Select your preferred keyboard layout. • Click Continue to proceed in the installation process.
Installing Ubuntu Personal Information
• Enter your information in this screen. › Your name : Enter your name here. › Your computer's name : Enter the name you want the computer to have. This name will be used when talking with other computers. › Pick a username : Enter your username in this field. It will be used when you log in. › Choose a password : Enter your
password here. › Confirm your password : Reenter your password. › Log in automatically: Automatically logs in to Ubuntu without asking for username or password. › Require my password to log in : Asks for password before you can use Ubuntu.
