Find inspiration in field trips to some of Melbourne’s iconic destinations. Australian Print Workshop’s Summer School provides a unique opportunity to work with some of Australia’s leading contemporary artists and printers in APW’s world-class printmaking facility. APW is a spacious, air-conditioned workshop, located in the heart of vibrant Gertrude Street Fitzroy, with ample printing presses and studio space supporting each participant. Every APW workshop participant will receive: • • • • • • • •

a supply of fine art rag paper printing plates basic tools a pair of protective gloves a visual diary for drawing on the field trip transport to and from the field trip an APW workshop apron 10% discount voucher for purchase of any limited edition fine art prints from APW Gallery’s extensive stock

Participants will gain an insight into this traditional printmaking process, often described as the most painterly of printmaking techniques. Exploring the medium of stone lithography, participants will draw and paint on the remarkable surface of finely grained Bavarian limestone blocks and will learn how to prepare the stone, process a drawing, prepare the paper and set up for printing. Working on the stone’s surface allows a direct approach to making marks and images. This workshop will explore drawing and painting techniques including lithographic pencil, crayon and tusche washes. During this workshop participants will develop an understanding of the intricate process of making a stone lithograph and will develop the skills to print a limited edition.

Special guest artist JUAN FORD Juan Ford is one of Australia’s most impressive realist painters. His work depicts highly detailed and individual perspectives of people, landscape, nature, light and shadow. His masterly drawing and painting skills are fundamental to his practice, resulting in images that are haunting and sublime. His work is represented in significant collections in Australia and overseas.

Field trip with Juan Ford: ROYAL BOTANIC GARDENS Juan Ford will accompany participants on a field trip to the Royal Botanic Gardens to contemplate the re-constructed natural world, the forms of plants and trees, the dramatic lights and shadows that occur in nature. Juan will discuss his sources of inspiration and how he uses material to develop his imagery. Participants will be encouraged to draw from the Royal Botanic Gardens environment to develop images for their lithograph.

After the workshop, Gertrude Street’s unique blend of art, design, cafes and dining are there to be explored.

Most APW workshops are suitable for beginners. All workshops cater for those wishing to renew their skills or further their creative development. APW workshops are ideal preparation for the school year for art teachers and senior secondary students.
