AUTUMN UPDATE 2014

Australian Rotary Health Supporting healthier minds, bodies and communities through research, awareness and education

Fostering Future Relationships THE RECENTLY HELD FUNCTIONS at State Government Houses in Australia are what we hope will develop into future relationships with the invitees. That is, representatives from state governments, the corporate sector and local Rotary Clubs. To date we have held these events in Darwin, Perth, Adelaide and Hobart. Our aim in hosting these events is to forge on-going long term strategies for a cohesive working relationship that will best service the people in these regions. If governments can work with ARH and local Rotary clubs in developing the program, we hope businesses will become active and caring corporate citizens by joining with us in creating a healthier Australian community.

Adelaide – Celebrating the beginnings of our Indigenous Scholarship Program On December 10th, 2013 we attended a wonderful reception in Adelaide with over 62 attendees, including the South Australian Leader of the Opposition Stephen Marshall MP, Chairman of RDU Peter Sandercock, and a number of leading business people and Rotarians. The Governor, Rear Admiral Kevin John Scarce AC CSC RANR, gave a brilliant address in recognition of the benefits Rotary and Australian Rotary Health (ARH) provide to the community at large. Later he personally thanked PP Geoff Bailey OAM for his foundation of the Indigenous Health Scholarship Program and spoke of the personal impact he has seen from mental illness. After the function, Director DGN Dick Wilson and wife Liz held a magnificent dinner at the Adelaide Club where the District Governors and several dignitaries discussed ARH in South Australia. We had enjoyable meetings with the Rotary Club of Adelaide and the Rotary Club of Mitcham – Geoff Bailey’s Club, who provided initial support in making the indigenous program a reality. Hobart – Our Largest Guest List Yet! The Hobart Government House reception was hosted on Friday February 14th by His Excellency The Honourable Peter Underwood AC. This event was our most popular function to date with approximately 90 people in attendance. Again, this was an excellent opportunity to bring representatives from government, corporations and Rotary together to explore the potential for future activities. It was very positive to see a number of major company directors at this event also.

On Sunday the 16th February, 2014, ARH Chairman Terry Grant and CEO Joy Gillett attended a morning tea with the Governor General, The Honourable Dame Quentin Bryce, who was a Patron of Australian Rotary Health. The event was held to say ‘thank you’ to the charities she has represented.

Together with ARH CEO Joy Gillett and Corporate Manager Terry Davies, I attended meetings with the Rotary Clubs of Lindisfarne, Howrah and Hobart. We also attended a very successful multi-club meeting at the Rotary Club of Claremont (who donated $19,500 in 2010 Continued page 2

to the Funding Partner program). DG Bruce Buxton was in attendance and detailed the wonderful partnership between District 9830 and ARH. (Overall, there are significant opportunities presenting in the Tasmanian District). District Committee starts Year in Success As many of you will know, we have a hardworking group of Rotarian representatives around the country who promote the work of ARH to their Districts. I attended the last committee meeting chaired by new Director PDG Greg Ross. This was a great start to the new year, and with the support of ARH, we hope these representatives will continue their hard work in promoting the worthwhile activities of ARH to the community.

Australian Rotary Health (ARH) successfully held some of its major annual events at the Zone 8 Institute in Canberra, November 22–24, 2013; the DGN cocktail party, the ARH Dinner and our Annual General Meeting. New Directors were officially welcomed onto the ARH Board - PDG Laurie Barber, PDG Greg Ross and PDG Peter Williams. The Board also farewelled friends they have worked with over the last few years - Vice Chairman PDG Don Whatham and Director PDG Patrick Hartley. PDG Jeff Crofts was appointed as the new ARH Vice Chairman, and a number of prestigious awards were presented to those who have committed themselves to the service of ARH.

New Drug treats 1 in 5 terminally ill cancer patients Early trial results have showed one in five patients with advanced leukaemia are cancer-free as a result of a new drug. The drug, ABT-199, also shows promise for the treatment of other cancers. Trials were run by the Peter MacCallum Cancer Hospital in Melbourne, in conjunction with a number of research institutions, for the past year and a half. Funding was provided by a Funding Partner Research Grant from the Rotary Club of Williamstown ‘Friends-R-4 team’ in Victoria and Australian Rotary Health. Professor Ricky Johnstone, lead author and Head of the Cancer Therapeutics Program says “We are very excited about the results of our study and are already in the process of planning new clinical trials for patients with chemotherapy-refractory leukemia using our new treatment regimen.” Each year around 1,000 Australians are diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia. The disease usually becomes resistant to chemotherapy, meaning there is little prospect of survival for patients. Researchers, however, have successfully targeted a signalling pathway, responsible for a large number of aggressive adult and childhood leukaemias, allowing them to kill blood cancer cells and offer a potential cure. Findings were published in the prestigious journal Cell Reports on 22 November 2013. The study also received coverage in mainstream media such as the Sydney Morning Herald and ABC News.

Professor Ricky Johnstone

In a letter to the Rotary Club of Williamstown, Professor Johnstone said “This work would not have been possible without the generous support from The Williamstown Rotary Club Friends-R-4 team and Australian Rotary Health and I cannot thank you enough for your assistance.” One of the drugs used in this trial is already approved for the treatment of adults with other cancers, and the second is in clinical development. Professor Johnstone suspects the treatment could be available to patients in a matter of years.

FIRST CHAIRMAN REMEMBERED Past Rotary International President Royce Abbey AO DCM sadly passed away on February 20, 2014. Royce was the inaugural Chairman of Australian Rotary Health – or the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund as it was then known. Royce served as chairman of the Steering Committee in 1982 and Royce was appointed Chairman of the inaugural Board in February 1983. Royce resigned as Chairman at the end of 1987 to take up his appointment of Rotary International President during 19881989.

David Hawes is one of three recipients to date to receive the Royce Abbey Fellowship.

Indigenous Scholar helps local Cambodian Dentist Indigenous Health Scholar Gari Watson has just returned from a placement in Phnom Penh, Cambodia working in a local dentistry program for underprivileged Cambodians. Gari worked in a team with two other students from his university, a local dentist and six dental assistants through the International University and mobile clinics in the slums and schools. “We carried out hundreds of fillings and extractions,” Gari said, “A service that a lot of Cambodians cannot afford especially when the average annual income is around US$800 a year.” He also worked in a preventative dentistry program which delivers oral health education, fissure sealants and fluoride to school children. “During our visit we managed to deliver

these services to nearly 600 children. This is a vital way of addressing the poor oral hygiene of Cambodian children and is the key to rendering severely decayed and missing teeth.” Despite seeing some of the most severe dental problems in his career, and not having access to more advanced instruments, he said the trip was a great experience. With the continued support of an ARH Indigenous Health Scholarship, sponsored by the Rotary Club of CairnsMulgrave, Gari will be able to take new skills into his final year of dentistry at James Cook University, Queensland. “I have taken away a lot of learning that will not only contribute to my career, but most importantly, to the people of Cambodia. I can really admire the treatment I deliver and see a sense of a great appreciation."

Meet Our Newest Rural Scholar Fourth year rural medical student, Mugdha Bokil, has successfully received an ARH Rural Medical Scholarship for 2014. Originally from Cooma, NSW, Mugdha will undertake her one year rural placement at the Australian National University’s (ANU) Rural Clinical School in Goulburn. “I believe any and all experiences are valuable to the future of my medical career, particularly those involving rural communities,” she said.

He was presented with a Life Membership for his service to the organisation in both an official and unofficial capacity. Mugdha’s scholarship is being sponsored by Rotary District 9675. She hopes the Goulburn placement will provide a better perspective of rural medicine in Australia and this will benefit her in the future.
