Different methods of recording spaces I experimented in using different methods of recording spaces. As a starting point in which helped me focus on the key information. This helped me appreciate the details around and within the space, also scale, in which a person would represent that.

Recording spaces - canteen

Recording spaces - canteen Cantten/cafĂŠ: Within the space there was different uses; computer spaces, eating spaces, and buying area. The ceiling of this space was interesting as it was in a zig-zag formation, leaving more window spaces in some parts more than others.

Recording the canteen The canteen differed to the cafĂŠ part of it, as it was more generic in its layout of benches and booths. The stairs in the middle of the canteen made it interesting as it slanted the space making it move the desire lines of the space in different angles.

Recording the Quad space

Recording the Quad space 3D sketches; Capturing my understanding of the Quad, taking some of the spherical based aspects as they represent the quad in a interesting way. Also this helped me record quick information, the key areas that make the quad .

interior aspects & close ups These are some of the close ups of what was inside the quad which I documented through images and sketches.

interior aspects & close ups Whilst recording the different aspects of the quad I realized that within a rectangular form of the space, the aspects inside are more spherical and round; booths, chairs the cafĂŠ. So along with that, I tried to gather different shaped aspects i.e the window structures.

Mood board – inside, underneath, in-between. I chose an abstract approach to the ideas to generate more ideas for inspiration for a potential interior aspects.

Mood board – inside, underneath, in-between I also looked at existing spaces, which could link to the theme. Most of which looked at the difference light makes form different angles. This interested me into looking at light as a whole factor in large and small spaces. Some of the spaces use light as a big impact to the aesthetic of the spaces; adding composure and focus, with different types of light.

Primary images Focusing on the theme of ‘underneath’ I collected images of what was above me: lights, ceiling… Also experimented on their reflection on a cd.

Primary images sketches I joined some aspects of my images to create new forms and shapes. Also, I used a collage method to broaden the idea of ‘layering’ as it could show more depth to the work I am doing. The collaging worked well on adding different textures which helped reinterpret the primary images.

Model – paper straws and wire. The idea of geometric triangles interested me into using triangle forms. I wanted the model to have more exaggerated shadow, however they turned out soft. Perhaps the model could stand vertically to have more shadows to work with.

Model - Paper straws The triangle concept interested me into refining the model to a chained formation. This also allowed me to move around the design and make it into different shapes. However, the model could of worked better if the triangles could be aligned in a geometric design. From this idea I recorded the model in the form of a collage and it allowed me to layer and also generate more ideas. Sketching form of the collage.

Model - ‘silver card’ and magazine cut outs Experiment on reflective surfaces. Part of refining the triangular forms; I explored using a different medium to see if light could affect the in the presentation of the model. This worked well as the silver card gave off a mirror effect in which it reflect the light in different forms onto different surfaces.

A close up of the reflection of light. I liked this idea as it needed more effects such as light to show the real effect, although without the flash it worked well as well.

Model - Wire, foam board and tracing paper The dome idea intrigued me as they corresponded to the spherical interior of the quad space, this model switched that concept of interior as and exterior aspect.

Dome idea: a reflective surface to go around the main part of the building aspect.

Refinement I kept the aspect of the folded pattern and the mood in which the roof would be the accent feature, resulting in using light to change the mood of the space.

Rotation of the hourglass shape to link to the existing space; the Quad.

Model of the dome idea I turned the reflective surface to face towards the interior; which did not work as the light would not go through the card and did not create the triangular reflections.

Arc model The arc model is very similar to the dome idea in where it is the exterior aspect in which creates an interior allusion using light. This used the aspect of a close up of a skeleton leaf to which I used on green paper to signify the nature-esque essence of this idea.

Arc model I took in to consideration of what design to go for, to continue as a see through aspect, I looked at different colour coordination too see what effect it would create. The black print was the strongest within the three colours as it showed a clear form and had the strongest shadow effect. I also looked at a smaller scale experiment in seeing how the effect would appear through the acetate.

Arc model with scale (close up view)

Sketches of the model; refining Revaluation of the design of the arc concept; The curved acetate deforms the design in which I looked at it straight and it presented a clear shadow and replication of the design. Skeleton leaf representation on acetate, showing the reflection that comes through.

Existing spaces From the existing space, I searched physical examples of design layouts and how I should use the space to redesign the quad. I liked the open clear layout with the hanging and shelved items were placed around the space with seating area’s and some tables for more items inbetween. I might use these layouts for the space as they help for the access of the space and as for a retail shop to be clear for the customers.

Existing spaces - interior Recreating the quad, I found a plan of an existing retail space, which helped me redesign the quad, and use aspects from this example on the quad. Also this space is very similar on the shape of the quad space. I began to consider the main desire lines throughout the space and applied that to the quad with retail aspects from this in to the new design of the existing space.

Final archCAD model; th e

I used the Quad space as the frame work of the design with the measurements and also the door aspects, this helped me to understand both the existing space and the redesigned space as I considered scale and the different purposes of the space.

Final archiCAD model; close ups

Elevation view of the final archiCAD model Elevation drawings I showed in a rendered version to present the interior design in a better way, this helps the client to visualize the retail shop in a realistic form. Also helps with the sense of scale of the sofas and the tables along with the decorative part; the flower vases. Which are part of the experience of the shop as it reflects on the exterior to bring in the nature inside.

Plan view of the retail shop & labelled version

Measurements used from the Quad; 13000mm x 18000mm

Final model; - Foam board, frosted plastic, acetate and wire Refining the ‘arc’ to fit in with the function of being a highstreet space, which lead me to making it more practical and applying the scenery to discover the better option. Also from the CAD drawings the nature theme can continue with the flowers and the roof. Low angle view: the concept of the design was to look aesthetically pleasing along with functional purpose. The idea of light and its effect was also a main theme which lead me to this idea. The leaf skeleton design as the roof as part of a natural essence within the modern design.

Final model; - Foam board, frosted plastic, acetate and wire I captured some images from different angles to create a more visual sense of the space for the client. The people and trees were part of the scenery of a high-street surrounding. It would of been better to add the functional doors to the building.
