COLLAGES
COLLAGE ONE The first collage was created as an exploration into a conceptual narrative developed by the group. We began by situating an abstract architectural intervention into the mound, specifically the well area deep within the mound. This area sat directly below the foundations of the tower that once stood atop the mound and therefore offered an already existing architectural context to develop our ideas further. The intention of the intervention was to find cultural artifacts buried within the mound and present these artifacts to people that were visiting the mound at the time. However, as the conceptual narrative began to develop the architectural intervention became a far more self centered and existential being all together. The process of collage making was deeply influential to seeking an aesthetic understanding of the design. However, it is a final separation from and re-interpretation of the collage that allowed our original concepts to progress into a far more complex investigation that questions the way in which we interoperate and understand the spaces in which we inhabit.
COLLAGE TWO The second collage intended to explore a specific detail of this artificially intelligent creature. The ‘digestion system’ of an architectural intervention was a fascinating composition to explore and created various question about how we would design such a space. How does architecture consume objects? Is it mechanical or organic? The narrative quickly became fictitious in nature as the idea of constructing an architectural intervention became a thought experiment to explore ideas of interpreting architecture instead. By building an interpretive narrative we are able to question hypothetical and theoretical points of architecture that would be otherwise unattainable in a more conventional design process. The final proposition for our intervention was to create an artificially intelligent creature that consumes objects of significant interest for itself. By doing this the machine organism is able to ascertain meaning and therefore understanding of the world in which it is suddenly a part of.
