FLUCTUATIONS IN TOURISM AND THE RISE OF THE HEDONISTIC NOMAD
625,000 600,000
THE FOLLOWING GRAPHS ANALYSES THE FLUCTUATIONS IN TOURIST NUMBERS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR IN IBIZA. THE DATA SHOWS A PRONOUNCES SPIKE DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS, CORRELATING TO THE CLUBBING SEASON FROM MAY TO OCTOBER. THIS CREATES A HUGE FLUCTUATION IN THE POPULATION OF THE ISLAND, GIVING RISE TO EMPTY CITIES AND TOWNS DURING THE WINTER AND A BUSTLING CLUBBING MECCA DURING THE SUMMER.
575,000 550,000 525,000 500,000
THE GRAPHS ALSO ANALYSE THE ANNUAL NUMBER OF TOURISTS FOR THE LAST 6 YEARS, SHOWING A STEADY INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF TOURISTS. IBIZA IS BECOMING BUSIER LOUDER AND FASTER YEAR BY YEAR: THE GEN Y POPULATION HAVE FOUND A NEW ESCAPE.

HEDONISM IN IBIZA
PLEASE REVIEW MAP FOR SPECIFIC LOCATION OF NIGHTCLUBS THE START OF THE SUMMER SEASON IN MAY GIVES RISE TO THE BEGINNING OF A 5 MONTH LONG PARTY IN WHICH EVERY PERON INVOLVED EXPLORES THE BOUNDARIES OF HEDONISM AND SELF EXPRESSION. BELOW ARE THE 16 MAJOR VENUES ON THE ISLAND THAT HOLD WEEKLY EVENTS. A SERIES OF PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN FROM EACH VENUES WEBSITE SHOWS THE SUBTLE DIFFERENCES AND FANTASTICAL SIMILARITIES IN AESTHETIC AND DESIGN. BELOW THIS IS A TABLE THAT EXPLORES THE WEEKLY ROUTINE OF EACH CLUB. THE TABLE SHOWS THAT NOT ONLY DO CLUBS HOLD MULTIPLE NIGHT BUT EACH NIGHT IS DIFFERENT, CREATING A DIFFERENT THEME WITH A DIFFERENT STYLE OF MUSIC AND SOCIAL AGENDA. PEOPLE DO NOT STAY AT ONE SINGLE VENUE BUT MOVE FROM PLACE TO PLACE AND HAVE THE ABILITY TO EXPERIENCE DIFFERENT COMBINATIONS OF VENUES EACH NIGHT AND NO ONE NIGHT IS EVER THE SAME BECAUSE OF THIS. 1

EXPLORING IBIZA
RECORDING INFORMATION ON THE MOVE
5
THE NOMAD MOVES ACROSS THE LANDSCAPE, BRINGING THEIR ARCHITECTURE WITH THEM. FOR THIS REASON I CHOSE TO EXPERIENCE MOST OF IBIZA BY CAR, CAPTURING MOVEMENT ACROSS THE LANDSCAPE AND THE CHANGES IN INFRASTRUCTURE INSTEAD OF THE LANDSCAPE AND INFRASTRUCTURE ITSELF. THE FOLLOWING SERIES OF IMAGES SHOW STILLS FROM SEVERAL MOVIES THAT WERE TAKEN ON THE TRIP. TO THE RIGHT IS A DIAGRAM, WHICH DISPLAYS INFORMATION ON WHERE AND HOW LONG EACH VIDEO WAS TAKEN. FROM THIS ANALYSIS I WAS ABLE TO SENSE HOW ARCHITECTURE COULD MOVE THROUGH THE LANDSCAPE, IT WOULD HAVE TO BE REACTIVE AND RESPONSIVE TO THE CHANGING ENVIRONMENT JUST AS I WOULD BE BEHIND THE WHEEL OF A CAR. THE ARCHITECTURE WOULD HAVE TO RESEMBLE SOMETHING SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT FROM THAT OF A MOVING BUILDING, MORE A VEHICLE THAN A STATIC FORM.

MASTERPLAN THE MASTER PLAN LOOKS AT THE CURRENT INFRASTRUCTURE OF IBIZA AND APPLIES A NEW ARCHITECTURAL AGENDA TO THE HEDONISTIC LANDSCAPE. A DYNAMIC SHIFTING OF PROGRAMME: THE DOTS SEEP INTO NEW FORMS OF ARCHITECTURE, A CHANGING, SHIFTING, OVERLAPPING OF RESTAURANTS, BARS, HOTELS, AND CLUBS AS THE BOUNDARIES THAT DEFINE THE SPACE SOFTEN TO CREATE NEW AND MALLEABLE FORMS OF ARCHITECTURE WHICH IS NOT DEFINED BY A THING IS SPACE BUT AN EVENT IN TIME. ARCHITECTURE NOW MOVES ACROSS THE LAND ALONG INTERCHANGEABLE AND INVISIBLE LINES. THIS MASTER PLAN IS A SNAPSHOT IN TIME.
