“Producing inner images is a natural process common to everyone. It is part of thinking. Associative, wild, free, ordered, and systematic thinking in images, in architectural, spatial, colorful, and sensuos pictures- this is my favorite definition of design.

- PETER ZUMTHOR / THINKING ARCHITECTURE

PHX. STATION 55 fall 2014 / arch. studio III instructor: Phil Horton Team: Richard Van Horne Station 55 is a multi-functional fire station located within the northern Phoenix Sonoran landscape. The station places the comfort and activites of the firemen around the functional aspects of a station, creating a welcoming, community-driven station. Sustainable systems are integrated into the design, producing arcitecture that works with the landscape.

CENTRO JUVENIL COLMENA spring 2014 / arch. studio II instructor: Max Underwood Centro Juvenil Colmena translates to “hive youth center. This project sets out to design a transitional public space within the Barrio libre of Tuscon, AZ. The area is home to many at-risk youth, and the colmena sets out to provide a comfortable space for youth to gather, explore, and expand their knowledge. The Colmena also serves as a safe haven within the community, welcoming students into after-school programs and transitional activities.

_

_site the given site attacks the idea of adaptive reuse. the current site houses a 60 year old market, which used to be the main public center throughout the 50’s. As the area changed, the building has diteriated, exspoing rich adobe walls underneath the surface.

ARA COMPETITION summer 2014 personal competition / 3rd place Arizona Residentail Architects held a competition open to students enrolled in the 2nd/3rd year architecture programs at Arizona State and the University of Arizona. The breif called for a 5,000+ sq. ft. home situated on a lot off of Camelback Rd. Program included a grandparents suite, a study, a workshop, and an open floor plan.

_

CONCEPT

_lifted volume

_courtyard spaces

the program is split by heavy rammed earth walls. the walls orient views towards downtown phoenix and camelback mounatin to the north

the desert landscape is brought into the home through various courtyards and gardens to create an open, inside-out feel to the home. the courtyards also act as vertical connection points

a main volume with private spaces is lifted above the social programs of the home, while capturing the views located around the site.
