Momia Juanita. Momia Juanita (Spanish for "Mummy Juanita"), also known as the Inca Ice Maiden and Lady of Ampato, is the well-preserved frozen body of an Incan girl who was killed as an offering to the Inca gods sometime between 1450 and 1480, at approximately 11–15 years old. She was discovered on the Mount Ampato (part of the Andes cordillera) in southern Peru in 1995 by anthropologist Johan Reinhard and his Peruvian climbing partner, Miguel Zårate.
The Chinchorro Mummies • The Chinchorro mummies are mummified remains of individuals from the South American Chinchorro culture found in what is now northern Chile and southern Peru. They are the oldest examples of mummified human remains, dating to thousands of years before the Egyptian mummies. They are believed to have first appeared around 5000 BC and reaching a peak around 3000 BC.
• Chachapoya mummies are related to Inca mummies: that is, the Chachapoya people lived in an area of what is now northern Peru--an area that the Inca wanted for their own. The Inca at first tried to persuade the Chachapoya to become part of the empire peacefully. When that failed, the Inca fought for (and eventually won) the Chachapoya land.
